Both started out as arcade games, both got excellent games on the NES. And eventually thanks to the licensing skills of Tradewest they shared the spotlight.
Tell us what beat-'em-up classic is your favorite, and why.

This one's a no-brainer - Double Dragon more-or-less defined the genre, while Battletoads was just a decent implementation of it. DD all the way.

Tell us what beat-'em-up classic is your favorite, and why. Battletoads originated on NES. It's my pick too. The gameplay is more varied than Double Dragon.

It did? D'oh. I love the arcade game. And as much as it pains me because I love both NES games, I'm going with Double Dragon.

I have to give it to Double Dragon. I thought the Battletoads games were okay though.

As awesome as it is to punch Minotaurs packing laser guns square in the nuts courtesy of the Battletoads arcade, I'm siding with Billy and Jimmy here.

After a long thought.... Much longer than usual to decide, but I really enjoy beat em ups...
If I was just going off the first Double Dragon, I would probably side with Battletoads. Or going off "which one do I play as in Battletoads / Double Dragon," I would probably pick Battletoads...
But overall, I have to side with Double Dragon because of the great movie that was... wait... That movie sucked. Regardless, I am going to side with Double Dragon because while Battletoads was very varied in action, I felt it was too much so and was so difficult in some parts that I have yet to beat the level with those stupid speeder-bikes. Even with save states
Usually, I like games that are really tough, but without a way to continue through these really tough parts, I can't vote for it. I have to vote for the game that is very tough, but has a learning curve that you can definitely master...
Double Dragon is my vote.
And while I'm writing this, I would just like to mention that both of these games NEED a new update. Please?

Great poll. DD was back in the days, but ever since BT in Battlemaniacs came out on the snes, there was no turning back!

I'm saying Double Dragon, since DD2 for the NES is still my favorite beat-em-up style game. I really grew to appreciate Battletoads once I found that it could be beaten through much memorization and skill, but since DD is generally less frustrating, that's my choice.

Battletoads is a great game, Double Dragon games never really reached that level of fun in my mind. DD 2 on the NES was close, but not quite.
Battletoads for me :)

Playing with kickass frogs riding speeder bikes was more fun.

Ditto. The humor and varied gameplay made it a little more fun to play I think.

I'm probably the only Rare fan in the history of Rare... that doesn't care for BattleToads at all. And the crossover was the worst!
Deffinately Double Dragon, which is my favorite Beat Em' Up series anyways.

No question. Double Dragon wins, hands down. It more or less established the entire beat-em-up genre, and it still holds up great today. Battletoads is a great game too, but just too damn hard for its own good.

My vote goes for the Battletoads. Purely because of their names:

I think if I were playing alone, then I'd choose Double Dragon, but for 2-player co-op, I'd choose Battletoads.
I thoroughly enjoyed Battletoads vs. Double Dragon on the SNES. :-P

Double Dragon is great, and the movie rocked, but to me Battletoads was more fun, even if it was hard as nails.

Besides the nes two, I don't enjoy most of the battletoads games. Double Dragon though I enjoy that hell out of on arcade, genesis, nes....

Gonna have to side with the majority here...Double Dragon for me. Not only was the game a pioneer, but it still holds up today IMO...I can go back and play Double Dragon I, II, and Super Double Dragon all day long and not get bored. Double Dragon 3 flat out kicked my ass. So did Battletoads, but even moreso, which is why I had to bump it down a few notches when compared to the Double Dragon series as a whole. I did really like the SNES and arcade versions of Battletoads a lot though.
