View Full Version : Writing DP Reviews made easy

Ok, we have a ton of great content on this site. It could take months to really see it all. However, the review section is lacking in areas. This is in no way a rip on those who have written for it. Everything we have up there is quality.

But look at something like the Jaguar section or even the Astrocade section. They need help... badly. This is hard stuff to find as the information just isn't out there. I write a lot, but my experience and collection is limited in certain areas. We have plenty of other quality writers here too, just not enough to cover all the areas that DP does.

So, what can you do? Well, you have a keyboard, right? You have some video games, right? Then you're set. I'll even make this easy on you. If you don't have much time, send the reviews to me (word or .txt). I can edit and spell check, even put them into an HTML template to make it easier for Joe when the time comes for him to post them. Screen shots are a positive.

We don't follow any basic style. It's your review. Write them how YOU want them to be written. Only a few requirements: If we have a review, well it's reviewed. No need for a second. Screen shots are always a plus. Scores are needed between 1-10 in graphics, sound, gameplay, and overall.

Any system reviews are accepted. If we don't have a section for it, it's a double bonus. Oh, and though this is a call for oddball game reviews, don't let that stop you from writing on the classics. If you want to send them to me, drop me a PM. If not, click on reviews over there on the left for information on where to send them.

THANKS!

I'm one of the guilty parties here... I still "owe" Joe a bunch of Atari 2600 reviews that I promised him eons ago...

Lookit this way: I'm home alone tonight, and I oughta make the best of it and set my typing fingers ablaze (as if I didn't do that all day already!). :D

Ehh, what the hell, I'll give it a shot. I've been thinking about writing some, and figure now's a good time. I'll post it when I'm done...I think I'll write one for Monster Party.

Gamereviewgod is a damn good writer. He deserves to hook up with some prozines or newspapers to get some professional gigs in.

Keep looking into the leads I gave you, GRG.

But, keep in mind, you will have some VERY tough competition.

And don't take rejection too hard.

I never heard back from an application for an editor at GamePro.

You have not known humiliation until you have been rejected by GamePro!

:embarrassed: LOL

Submit a review?

Hell, I still need to update my review for Section Z (the NES version) over at Shmups. You know, so it can have screenshots from the NES version (Malc and I were unable to find a ROM way back when), and I lacked a vid capture card).

Plus, would that require actually finishing a game? ;)

Though, I am tempted to review the FDS versions of the Zeldas, Kid Icarus, and Metroid...

Would you accept PSP reviews? I haven't played many games on it to make one, but once I do I wouldn't mind trying it for once.

I almost forgot that I wrote a review for Battle Bakraid! That was ages ago... but you know, I may just get back into the loop. The question is, what game to rant about... hmmmmmmmmm...

ADD: HOLY CHRIST-PUNCHERS!!! I do not see a Bionic Commando review for the NES... welp, I do believe that I have my first challenge. I'll devise a rough draft for it post-haste. :D

We'll take anything Uzi. I'm doing Wipeout and Ridge Racer though. I called dibs first! ;)

Dire, you've got the ability and it's insane to say you don't.

good call. I've been meaning to do some N-gage reviews since last I checked it didn't even have a section. If I get my ass in gear and write one I'll PM you. If I don't get my ass in gear I hope somebody else does so the N-Gage can have a section.

I don't post them Sotenga, Joe does. I'm just editing and stuff to make it a bit easier on him. Trust me, when you see the pile of stuff I send him, you'll understand why this takes so long. LOL

Ah, I see. Domo, Matt. :)

Joe, take your time on getting the BC review up. Realize that when I wrote that one, that wasn't one of my better days, but I do believe it shall be adequate regardless. :D

I guess I will start working on a review for it, because It's my fav. Game Boy game! :)

I see a massive number of missing sega CD titles. I will attempt a few, and if those go well, a few dozen maybe.

edit: how about meseta rewards for reviews? hehehe

edit2: i'll do space adventure cobra right after i finish SMT:DDS1 in a day or two..hopefully i'll finish it that quick anyway

I'm not planning on using my Meseta for anything, so if you want a little bit, sure, why not? Not sure how much is fair, but I'm sure we could work something out.

I'll give you that. I'm going to want at least two screen shots per review though... and a well-written review!

Also note that I'm way behind on this (the forums have taken up all of my site-maintenance time), I've already got 20 reviews "in the hopper" that need to go online. So please check with me on the titles before you start!

Thanks folks.

I'm gonna do one on Wind Waker if that's not taken, but I don't know how to get screenshots for that (no emulator or capture card).

The company's official site is usually your best bet for newer game screen shots. If they're flash based or something, you're out of luck. Then head to Google and try to find a site with them. Just be sure they don't have a site stamp on them or anything (like on IGN and Gamespot). I usually just use "x game screen shots" and on the first page you'll find something usually.

I'd like to call dibs on writing reviews for
GB Volley Fire
GB Tetris
GB Navy Seals
GB Lambroghini American Challenge
and GBC Mr Driller
(are they already done?)

I've written the reviews already, just need to get
together the screen caps, and adjust the scoring
system I did to fit DP's.

well, I've got next week off from school, so I think I'll throw together some more reveiws. I gotta finish up my Spanky's Quest reveiw, and I think I must just write a reveiw for Golden Sun as well, and give it the verbal beating it so rightfully deserves.

I'll be digging into the pile of reviews Gamereviewgod has sent over the past few weeks with the hopes of getting caught up on that front again!

I've got a review for GB Mickey's Dangerous Chase ready to submit once I get the screencaps happening.

I'll also call dibs on doing reviews for:

GC Die Hard Vendetta
GB Quarth and
GB Adventures of Lolo

if they're not already taken..

Mr digitalpress, publish more reviews.. I demand my eternal life in the Reviews index ;)

Steempy

Submitted reviews for GC Die Hard Vendetta and Goldeneye Rogue Agent, and going to write reviews for:

GB Snoopy's Magic Show,
GC Scorpion King: Rise of the Akkadian
and PS2 World Racing next

BTW, this isn't for egomania's sake - posting in this thread stops review writers from doubling up.

OK, some egomania is involved :(

I like this new batch of writers. You guys have done a great job! Keep 'em coming (actually keep 'em coming to Gamereviewgod, as he's been managing the formatting and saving me scads of time in the process).

With the exception of a few reviews received in the last few days from Mr. Gamereviewgod, we're all caught up.

Thanks again and keep up the great work!

Just curious - do these need to be exclusive to DigitalPress? I've decided to write reviews of the games I finish, mostly for personal remembrance and post them on my website-in-progress (not primarily a gaming site). I've also thought about submitting it to RPGamer and maybe a few others, so I thought I would ask.

If it goes through, I've just finished off a review of Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne.

Hopefully, my Bionic Commando review can be considered to be adequate. :)

I'm done with school in about two weeks, so expect more from me in that time. I've been eyeing Eternal Champions: Challenge From the Dark Side for the Sega CD...

Bumping again for a good reason. I had a plan. I was all set to go, then I realized I'm sort of stuck.

I have a few more to write yet (mostly CD), but I came close to having a review for EVERY 32X US release, a first for DP. There are two problems with this that I didn't anticipate:

1. Star Trek: I know absolutely nothing about the show, the movies, the series, and most importantly, the games. I don't know what the hell I'm doing or what I'm supposed to do (I didn't even make it out of training! LOL ). I'm not fit to review it. Anyone here up to the task?

2. Knuckles Chaotix: This game will NOT work in my 32X. I don't know why. No copies ever have. I failed to think this through before I started. My PC sucks and I can't emulate either. If you've played it, review it!

I'll throw in a HUGE chunk of extra meseta myself if someone steps up.

Also, if anyone wants to take a stab at the import only titles (FIFA, Darxide), go for it.

*Tyler, I got your Bards Tale review today. I'll get it sent tomorrow. Thanks!

I didn't get it Doonz. Did you send it to the address on the review page? If so, Joe got it. Give him time. He does a complete update every few weeks. If he kept up with what's sent on a daily basis, he have no time for one of them career thingies.

The offer above for the 32X reviews still stands by the way.
