Did you miss my post yesterday?

In regards to PS2 exclusive. I'm wondering where other people were getting PC info from (besides V-Jump). The website clearly states it's coming out on the PS2. The more I read about this, the less like an online RPG it looks, and the more like an RPG with some online capabilities.

I'm so glad to hear it's a genunine offline RPG. I absolutely abhorred Phantasy Star online, so it's nice to see them going back to classic- RPG goodness.

I liked PSO for a time.... but I ended up getting tired that sort of thing.

As for it being PS2 exclusive, what a freakin' joke. How low is Sega gonna get. Sony's hype murders their ass now they are @#$% collaborators.

The character designs look pretty naff anyway. I think the chances of another real Phantasy Star are about as good as Cheney winning the Nobel peace prize.

It's ironic that this post is here, right after I reserved 2 copies of it at my local EB Games store. LOL

One to keep and one to sell for an exorbitant amount later down the line. Why? Because this title is going to be pressed in limited amounts. (That's what I've been hearing)

If by limited you mean in the millions, then yes -- very limited... the only small-pressed Phantasy Star games were reprinted stuff. The Game Gear games are semi-rare, but had a tiny fan base in Japan to start with.

This is the sort of thing that almost makes me want a PS2 until I come down and realize that no sequel will ever do some of these older games justice.

Sega's soul still burns, but the flame is getting ever lower.

In the end all that is left of the real Sega will be the fans, I'm afraid.

Too much time has passed for some of these series to really have true sequels IMO. The power that made Sega great has gone out of the universe, we are all that is left of their religion.

And now young Tsukino..er,Playstation, you will die.....

I've got $5 that says this game is only PS2 exclusive in Japan. The game has not been announced for the U.S. market yet. Should we take that to mean that it will not have a U.S. release? No.

I've also got $5 more that says this game will be on Xbox Live.

I've heard rumors to that effect. I hope that they are true. Considering that Sonic Team is still involved I would still want it very much in that scenario.

It won't be like the old days, but I can't help myself.

I am kind of put off by the art style though.

I just hope this isn't a fiasco like Langrisser Millenium on DC (as opposed to the WS game which people seem to like better).
Sometimes great series just need to end and not get messed up.

And again the seal breaks, again the seal breaks, another one breaks the seal.
Hey, the seal broke again, another one breaks the seal.

And you petty mortals thought it was no longer needed? Hah.
The darkster is the gift that keeps on giving (sequels).

What are you babbling about? Sega's put out some quality stuff for the Xbox, Cube, and PS2. We haven't even seen this game yet, so how do you know it's gonna suck? Because it's in 3D? As long as the game as a moderately interesting story and maintains the now "arcane" concept of experience points, it'll probably better than the Final Fantasy abortions we've had shoved on us in recent years.

The Magic Box reported HERE (http://www.the-magicbox.com/game20050318.shtml) that Sega confirmed it is coming to PS2 and PC. I'd assume they got it somewhere, but they don't list their source ... :hmm:

I'm all for an off-line Phantasy Star... been waiting for one for a loooong time now.

Furinkan, no offense but I have no clue what the hell you're talking about. Yes, the PS2 killed off the DC, but really that's no reason to be against sega's offerings on the system. Hell, it's MUCH weirder for me to see Sonic on a Nintendo system than on a PS2.

Plus, since this game is essentially giving money to Sammy Inc. (remember that little merger bit?), holding onto the DC in that way is somewhat stale. Hold your DC in reverence, but don't let that deny you current Sega goodness, my friend.

Their source was V-Jump magazine, as the only thing that everyone initially reported from that article that was the same was that it was coming to the PC and PS2. Everything else differed like what type of game it was... some thought online RPG, some thought RPG with online elements. The official website leads one to believe the latter.

Very glad to hear this is an offline RPG. Phantasy Star I-IV are some of my favorite RPG's, and I'm glad I'll be able to play a traditional story driven one again.

I just have a strange sense of humour, and have seen too many PS2 drives flake out.

I'm sure it will be fine. I would just like to see it on other platforms. I have most of their XBOX releases. If I had bad experiences with XBOX I would probably be trashing it instead.

I don't mind it being in 3D. I just miss something intangible about older games. Maybe I should just play older games at these times. I have been buying the things like mad for years.

Neither do I sometimes.

I just feel funny playing games on PS2. It's kind of bizarre I suppose,

I'm not so much against Sega's offerings on PS2 as I am bothered by what has happened to Sega. I just can't stop living in the past I guess.

It is strange to see Sonic on a Nintendo system. I used to be a Nintendo fanboy, but now I kind of just want Nintendo to do well because they are the only surviving console company that I have any nostalgia for.

No matter how strange it is I would rather see Sonic on GC.

I have noticed mention of a PC version of Phantasy Star but that will probably stay in Japan.

I may just import it and fight with WIneX untill I get it to work someday. I sure do have a lot of XBOX games for someone who doesn't willingly use Windows outside of a work environment........

I agree w/ you. I'm really hoping Nintendo pulls through on this next console.

Anyways, there is mention of a PC version, but I'm only assuming a later port until I see something official from ST. Yuji Naka mentioned server side saves in his interview with EGM, but after seeing that PSU has two solid characters (PSO had zero before release) and that the product profile states it's an RPG (not an online RPG) I'm starting to think it's not true online RPG. Just my opinions, don't hold me to them.

Im glad they are keeping the online mode for PSU.

FINALLY a Real Phantasy Star :eek 2: great excellent ecxelsoir or whatever.

I have to admit that I too hated PSO:online.

Ive also read that PSTU will have at least 35 to 40 hours of OFFLINE gameplay thank the GODS :rocker:
I have soo missed a true Phantasy Star ever since the last one on Genesis this has been sooo long in the making.
From the pix and vids ive seen of the game it looks like it may turn out to be at least a very good RPG but I have faith in Sega this time that it may turn out to be a Great RPG.

This goes out to FurinkanianFrood: in all respect I understand SOME of what your points are. Hey the Dreamcast is my favorite system EVER and its sucks how it was nuked so early in life but thats no reason to deprive yourself of the SEGA games that are on the other consoles be it Gamecube or PS2.
Yeah the PS2 has never been my favorite system and it took YEARS for me to like the console half as much as my beloved DC but it Finally won me over with the sheer # and variety of games available on it and if that means playing the next Phantasy Star on PS2 well thats fine by me ;)

I don't see why people are calling PSU a "real" Phantasy Star game (as opposed to the "fake" PSO). It's not a turn-based, it doesn't continue the story of PS1-4, and it still has a large online game. If Phantasy Star Universe is a real Phantasy Star, then so is PSO.

GaijinPunch
04-13-2005, 10:45 PM
Agreed. Considering that PSU will be online, but with a 35-40 hour offline story, that means the majority of the game and time spent on it by most people will be in the online mode.

I think it's failry obvious that a true sequel to Phantasy Star will probably not come, unfortunately. Still though, PSO was ground-breaking and brilliant. Re-releasing it 4 times wasn't, but hey, they made some decent cash.

April 7, 2005 - Though it was already covered in the latest issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly, Phantasy Star Universe has officially been announced for release in North America and Europe. Confirmed by SEGA of America just moments before we went to press, the brand new role-player will launch in February of 2006 and is being simultaneously developed for the PlayStation 2 and Windows PC.

So PSO was on Cube first then Xbox and now PSU on PS2 only... This is a game that screams out to be cross platform or at least on the cube as well for all the support they have given PSO & PSO III. Oh well, thats why I traded for a PS@ system I guess.

I agree in that I wish it were cross platform... but I've been waiting for a true sequal to PSO for four years. I'm going to buy it regardless of what system it is on. :)

April 7, 2005 -

You said "when they first confirmed the game". The game was first confirmed at last years E3. The official website (http://phantasystaruniverse.jp/) has said nothing more than "this winter" which can be anytime between December and February. All other reports should be taken with a shaker of salt.

This is a game that screams out to be cross platform

Sonic Team has already proven that they suck shit at cross-platform games (Sonic Heroes). Too much middlewear and not enough explotation of the specific hardware.

Any thought on the chances of the import being English friendly, as PSO was?

I'd love to get my hands on the import if it's released before the US version.

I'm going to gander no. While Sonic Team likes to do this (probably easier on them) I don't know Sony would go for it...key words being "I", "don't", and "know". :)
