Just think about it. How many Neo Geo Gold Systems or SuperGrafx systems or FM Towns or NES or Genesis or Atari 2600 or Colecovision or Intellivision or whatever systems are in land fills in the United States and other countries?

Especially the United States. We are a throw away society here in the U.S., as sad as that must be.

Now, you might be asking yourself, who the hell would throw away a video game system? Well, mostly non video gamers. Mothers, Fathers, Grandmothers, Aunt's, Uncles, etc. They find old systems in garages or attics or closets or whatever, and they are simply clearing out space.

You would like to think that most would sell them at Garage Sales or at least give them away to charities that do curb side pickup of items for donations.

Yet, you would probably be amazed at the number of lazy, non environmentally aware people there are that simply throw stuff in the trash.

It's a damn shame.

But anyways, to get back to the original topic, I'm curious, how many Atari 2600 systems were originally made and how many are currently in land fills or dumps or other waste sites?

I'm pretty sure the current count is 89,254 Atari 2600 systems are in landfills, though I may have missed one or two.

I don't even want to think about it :(

its amazing how many systems and shit must be in land fills. look at the ET game for the 2600. its well known that most of them were dumped in the New Mexico desert with some other games along with it and it was then covered in concrete to never be seen again. and that was just one game. and non game collectors must throw out tons of systems and games individually daily.

I'm with this guy. I don't think you're actually going to get factual numbers. So...what are you asking?

Totally unscientific, and compares apple to monkeys, but here goes. In the classic car hobby, it is gernerally assumed that there are about 20 % of auto's left from the 50,60,70s, sometimes higher sometimes lower, but overall 20% Take that number and use it for videogames, roughly 80% of everything ever made ends up in a landfill/recycled. That would give you a good ball park figure.

Screw the video game stuff, I want the antiques and crap that are worth thousands and thousands of dollars. I could buy a lot of clean, minty games that aren't covered in seagull crap with that money.

LOL!

That's funny man. Yeah, I do understand that nobody is really going to know how many there really are, but somebody might know roughly how many total 2600's were made, and how many are likely changing hands.

or maybe not.

Anyways, I'm just asking the question, "How many video games and video game systems were thrown away in the trash."
