FF7 taught me "Jes". As in "You jes' fulla surprises."
FF4 taught me "spoony".

DDR and beatmania taught me the DJ term "BPM (Beats Per Minute)" if that counts.

Mostly learned martial arts terms from fighting games. Parry, ukemi, the ranking system in Karate, stuff like that.

Shining Force taught me 'egress'.

It's scary to think of all the military and weapons terminology that I've picked up from games. (Though BFG is, of course, the best)

Dahne has had Shining Force songs stuck in her ehad all day for no reason. Dun da DUN dun, dun da DUN dun, dun da dun DUUUUN, dun da DAAAH...

FF4 taught me "spoony".

ditto.

i'm a scrabble buff so after tellah threw down that "spoony" remark i had to look it up. it's good to know that if someone lays down the word "SPOON" in scrabble i can capitalize on it by extending it with...
-Y
-IER
-IEST
-ILY

btw: "spoon" is actually a somewhat common word in scrabble gameplay. it's a vowel dump and has a 3 point letter in it (the "P") and it starts with an "S" so it can be played off the tail end of nouns that can be pluralized by adding an "S".

Mostly Japanese words that I had to look up in the character dictionary.

Can't remember anything off hand.

I learned some words from Ultima IV but I was like 8 years old so I can't remember all that well. I don't remember running into many words I didn't know in there except for "stygian". Is Hythloth even a word?

Heh, I learned most of my vocabulary from games, that's why English was one of my favorite subjects in school ;)

After reading it above, I learned fiend from a game as well - it was Quake though ^^

Heh, I've been playing since I was 3 so what didn't I learn? Spoony does come to mind first though, I about died laughing.

Name a piece of armor/weapon or whatever, learned it from games.
Arbalast, pauldron, flamberge, tribuchet, greaves, circlet, bracer, frigate, man-o-war, schooner, dirk, stilletto, goal tending (wow, it took me a year to figure that one out), gauntlet, ballista, scimitar, bowyer, kee kee (thats what bats say).

I think I'll stop there LOL

I learned "prossess" from Castlevania II: Simon's Quest -- as in, "You now prossess Dracula's heart." Before that game I thought the word was "possess," but CV2 set me straight. Now I'm all like, "I prossess a large game collection," and "Did you see that exorcism movie where the devil prossessed that girl? I would like to prossess the DVD of that one!" Thank you, Konami.

Also, I doubt I'd have ever heard the term "Lapis Lazuli" if it weren't for SotN. With a name like that, who'd have guessed it was something real?

Other than stuff like spoony and frag, I've learned little English.

Now, Engrish....... ;)

Sotenga
03-24-2005, 02:37 PM
I wish I could think of more examples, but thanks to Symphony of the Night, I learned what a "familiar" is in the noun sense. I guess because it's a famliiar thing that can be related to whomever its master is? Heh...

Dr. Morbis
03-24-2005, 10:52 PM
I've learned a ton of "Engrish" too, but as for real words, the first one I remember learning was 'simultaneous'. If I hadn't read that on the back of so many NES game boxes, there is no way I would have known that word at the tender age of 10.

I'm sure I've learned tons of vocabulary from video games, but the only one that's coming to mind now is "Wraith" from Dragon Warrior. It was in a book we were reading in school in 4th grade. Of course, I insisted a wraith had to look like a skeleton as it did in Dragon Warrior. I guess that was before I played Shadowgate...

For some reason Tomb Raider 2 taught me 'Fathom'

I knew the meaning always, but I always forgot how to spell it. TR2 made me remember.

Kid Ice
03-25-2005, 12:25 AM
I learned "chalice" from VCS Adventure. The word wasn't actually in the game, but it was in the manual a few times.

Learned a little German from Castle Wolfenstein. Achtung!

Didn't learn any new words from SOTN, but I did learn that a man is a miserable pile of secrets.

Final Fantasy 6 taught me "semantic."

Fixed for me.

Xenosaga taught me, in the creepiest manner possible, the French words for "peach" and "sinner."

If I ever have to play Paper Mario 2 in French, I’ll understand at least one thing.

... So in Breath of Fire 3, Momo's real name is Peach?

Thank god they didn't translate it. o.O

And playing Labyrinth (Apple II) last night taught me a new one. "Adumbrate", actually I wasn't even sure what it ment in the game's context, but it sure as hell pissed off the elephant.

The phrase "Vice Versa" from Super Mario World. I actually fiured it out from the context and never looked up the definition.
