I recently decided to join the masses and picked up up Resident Evil 4. The game is absolutely amazing (as well noted here on the DP forums). After playing RE4 i decided i wanted to play the rest of the series. My experience with RE prior to 4 was limited to a few hours of play in the original before i got horribly pissed off and the demo of RE2. In other words, i know fuck all about the RE story aside from the obvoius parts.

Anyways i did a search and it didn't turn up any posts that would really help me so i'm turning to you the community to give me the advice i need. I am going to buy all the GC RE games and play them, but what i want to know is what order should i play them in. Each game reveals something more to the story, but they also bring up elements from past games. As i see it i have 3 options

Production Order: RE, RE2, RE3: Nemesis, RE: CVX, RE 0, RE4

Cronological order according to title: RE 0, RE, RE2, RE3: Nemesis, RE: CVX, RE4

or whatever order i randomly feel like (Although i'm not seriously considering that one).

Basically i'm wondering if it's better to play RE 0 before i play the rest. I'm also wondering if i should try to play the shitty, shitty side story games (RE: Survivor, RE: Dead Aim, RE: Outbreak)

Let me know what you is the right order. Thanks.

There were a few contradictions in RE0, when you have played the original Saturn/PSX/PC versions.

Personally, i played the games in production order and i thought that it was great as RE0 actually made a bit more sense that way(character wise).

Just think of it like this, if you are playing the games in production order then you are essentially playing the "Tarentino directors cut" of the RE script. If you don't like tarentino flicks then play them in chronological order.

Personally, i like the tarentino version 8-)

Well, RE3 actually takes place before _and_ after RE2, IIRC. Personally, I would play them like this:

RE0, REmake, RE2, RE3/RE:CV (either way, although CV is chronologically later).

As for the side story games, RE: Outbreak is worth playing, especially online, but you won't get much story insight from it. I'd skip the gun games if I were you.

Also, for RE2 and 3, consider the PSX, N64, or DC versions as you'll be able to acquire them more easily. The DC/N64 games are just as good as the Gamecube versions.

Might be helpful.
That is, if you want the plot.

Actually the production order was like this

Production Order: RE (March of 02)...RE Zero (Nov 02) RE2 (Jan of 03), RE3: Nemesis (Jan 03) RE: CVX (Dec of 03) and then RE4

Looks like a GC production order list. However, it isn't the order that the actual games came out due to previous versions on other systems.

Play RE, RE2, RE3, RE CV, REMake, RE0. Thata what I recomend. If you do it this way the series just gets better and better (IE grafics and play controll).
