Granted, I would've liked to have them all be free, but considering one of the free ones looks similar to my beloved Sidewinder, I'm cool with it. And I know I'll pay for em anyway :P

They look great...I'm not thrilled I have to pay $20 for them but whatever. Microsoft is gonna milk this franchise for as much as they can anyway...

At least its a boxed game disc as well... thats just plain cool! Hopefully it gets some super snazzy cover.
And the fact that they are remaking Sidewinder... thats jus plain cool. Easilly the best Map ever created for an FPS. I wonder if we'll ever get those cool maps for the original Halo that PC users got...
Now I just hope Tecmo will eventually give us Liveless people the Hurricane Packs.
I'll probably just hold out and download them all for free over Live.

In the article it says they will all be free to download on Live by the end of summer. On the disc you just get extra "Making of" type of stuff.

OK, I missed that.
Well, I'm not going to wait until the end of summer for these maps. I'm sure by then the Halo 2 population will have winded down a bit.

Just saw this on Bungie.net and I'm not really surprised. I'm probably going to wait for the maps to become free. They've lost a ton of credability in my eyes with this "stunt".

This "sponsored by Mountain Dew" business... does this mean we're going to see Mountain Dew logos splashed all over the free levels? Obviously there's some sort of promotion involved. I just hope it is tastefully done, whatever it is, and doesn't make its way into the actual gameplay.

How do you figure?
There's a fuckton of games with extra content you have to pay for. Quite frankly 6 bucks for two maps is more reasonable than Splinter Cell's 5 bucks a map.
Sides, all DC on Live eventually seems to become free, and they said as much themselves. They're a business-they make money. Making extra maps and testing them costs them time and manpower-I see no reason why they shouldn't make that back.

I would have like to see some new weapons and stuff.
I was thinking of sharing the disk, but I realized that it would probably have some sort of CD key on it.

I know they addressed this a while back...according to them, the way that the DC is set up, they can't add new single player levels (too big), and it's not really built to add new weapons or vehicles, which they also pointed out they fear that they'd upset the game balance. bugfixes in autoupdates, and new maps are basically all they can do.
I'd get teh disc for one reason-the extras. I hear there's gonna be a sidestory on there taking place on Old Mombasa. I'm hoping like hell it's related to the I Love Bees story, since at the end, the character Jan meets up with other SPARTAN-1.1s to fight the covenant, and there's a weapon cache hidden there by them. To be honest, if any such cache exists in the Turf map, I'd probably make some sort of squeal of geekitude.

It's one of these things. I said it in a thread on Bungie.net that got deleted pretty much as soon as I posted to it. You cannot keep telling people one thing and then doing another going "well that's what we meant all along! Silly you for not expecting that.".
I wouldn't have minded the cost or the wait for the new maps if they hadn't hinted that:
1) They'd be free - Which, ok they are after a wait but there was *no* mention of them costing anything while Frankie was doing his 'I've got a secret' routine. See previous claims of "Well if you get tired of the matchmaking you can play a custom game!" but not telling people they'd crippled it by making them not visible to the public for similar tactics.
2) 9 maps is all we get? Spread over the next 5 months or so? Again, no mention of this when others have similar mappacks/updates come out in one chunk. Also see previous claims off "Don't worry, we'll keep the game and playlists fresh!". I don't call a playlist change every 7-8 months and a map or two in a similar time all that fresh, especially given the crippled custom games.
Basically what it boils down to is the fact that we were mislead. Sure, it's partial my/our own fault for seeing things that weren't there but they certainly didn't help with their "I've got a secret nyanyanynyanya" method of releasing info. I'm willing to forgive mistakes/errors etcetc so long as I know what's happening but, once again, the Marketing machine leads you into thinking one then thing presents you with something else only to go "oh, you mean you're now annoyed because you thought something else? Silly you!".
Frankly, I won't be believing anything else that comes from anyone at Bungie unless the product is complete and in my hands from now on.

Well, the problem is that Bungie knows it has you over a barrel. And if you're a Halo 2 addict they know you'll STFU and buy it. I just hope it doesn't have a CD key or whatever, so I can buy it with 4 of my local clan mates and all use the same CD.

Only *9* maps? You act like that's so few! How many FPSs on Live get more than that for DC? I mean, you add that to the number of levels already there, and you've got a pretty damn good number. What you're forgetting, I think, is simply that very few games have free downloadable content...to think that Halo 2 would be an exception would just be silly.
To be fair, I'm pretty glad I don't have to dig through thousands of custom games to find one that's free, and not worry about being kicked out because of my rank (which happened all the damn time in Crimson Skies).

Frankly, compared to the PC FPSs it *is* so few. Granted we're talking about Live here but given the way Bungie has been talking things up I'd have expected something a bit more "epic" (http://bungie.net/News/TopStory.aspx?story=weeklywhatsfeb18) (Frankie did get one thing right there, it *is* surprising). Epic to me would've been at least five of the new maps either this week or next followed by one new map a week and a better schedule for updating the playlists to keep them "fresh". That'd be epic. As it is it's mearly mediocre at best especially considering the hype.
To be fair, I'm pretty glad I don't have to dig through thousands of custom games to find one that's free, and not worry about being kicked out because of my rank (which happened all the damn time in Crimson Skies).
I don't want to hijack this thread but this is what I don't understand. Why *not* have that option if people want to do that? Of course, I know the answer, it's to keep the numbers up in Matchmaking even when the current playlists get dull so it isn't a horrendous flop but it still bugs me. There have been times lately where I didn't want to play matchmaking and would much rather have spent 10 mins finding a custom game and fooling around with some random strangers but I can't. Basically what it all boils down to is the fatc I wish they'd either just clam up completely or just actually *tell* us things straight out rather than all this teasing crap which just leads their forums to explode when it isn't what people expect it to be.

I'm not thrilled I have to pay $20 for them
Don't complain at least your not in the UK well probally end up paying 20 POUNDS for them. Besides I'd rather buy the extras disc get the maps and other stuff too AND have a real item for the collection rather than just a download.

it will probably be a cd key type thing or need the disc in to play....or people would just go rent this for $5 instead of $20 purchase
