(Yes, this is worthy of post; most, nay, all of the SC-3000's I've seen are from Britain/Australia, and therefore, PAL.)

Is the Card Catcher just a simple pass-through device that allows you to play cards in the cartridge slot? Or is there more to it?

you are correct about what the Card Catcher is. I got burned on a John Sands PAL SC-3000 that I bought from Asia somewhere off of ebay. I think I have the SG-1000 and the Sega Mark III but not the SG-1000 II or the NTSC SC-3000.
