View Full Version : The Official "Was Your PSP Defective" Poll

Was your PSP defective in any way out of the box? By defective I mean did it have more than one dead pixel or were there any problems with it that were serious enough for you to return or exchange it.
I really want to see what the percent is before I even consider spending that much money.

I found one dead pixel at the top right corner of my PSP. I was told that it needed to have a few dead one's for them to consider it defective, so I can't do anything about it. I can only hope more will appear sometime soon and then I will be able to get my replacement.
It's really not that noticeable and thus why I haven't put up a stink about it yet...But knowing that it is there annoys me. Oh well...

First one had what was probably a few burnt pixels in a bunch. It was bright as hell and really noticable.
Second one has 3 or 4 dead pixels, not as noticible, but I'm still taking it back for another.
Hopefully the third time is the charm.

No it is and I don't regret buying it. I just think I should have held off abit until I heard about any of the problems people are having. There are a ton of complaints floating around about the dead pixel issue. If I just would have waited it out, Maybe Sony would have addressed and corrected the issue. I will say that the infamous "square button issue" hasn't happened to me yet.
As with tholly, *knocks on wood*.

I just posted a huge complaint, in th official PSP thread, about how I'm on my third PSP in as many days due to Pixel issues. This sucks. I am actually going to return my second for my third in about 8 hours. We shall see how it goes. Nuts.

Personally i think that is just discusting, why should you have to deal with a few dead pixels considering how much you have just spent!? Sony wouldnt be who they are without the consumers so they deserve fully working goods!
I think you should go and complain...
If that happens to me at Xmas this year i will be furious and wont take that for an answer! I will demand a new one!
Thanks, guys. You made my decision for me. I'm going to wait until summer's end. More software, glitches attended to and perhaps a price drop. Here's hoping. :D

I sympathize with anyone burned with bad PSP's. I have seen people go through hell with other Sony systems. I have personally been burned by PS2's that were bad models (all with certain model #'s are like that, though the issues I had were rather minor).
This is the sort of thing that convinced me that Sony is disgusting in general.
I know I seem awfully abrasive with my opinions about Sony but I've seen too many people lose money on this sort of thing. I don't believe in self-censorship is all.
I would wait. Most Sony systems seem to go through periods where lemons are unusually common.
I would wait until another model number shows up at least. I don't have the nerves for this sort of thing anymore myself. I used to be a big Playstation fan if you can believe that....... I was pompous then like I am now I suppose.... ;)

Weren't dead pixels just as much of an issue on the first GBA SP's and DS's?
Or have all you Sony-haterz forgotten that already?

After talking to some of you I was convinced that mine was going to have dead pixels. I had pre-ordered it via MAIL.
Came yesterday, it's perfect. I was looking for dead pixels with a magnifying glass for a little while there :)
It's the most visually impressive handheld I've ever seen and the first time in many years that I feel a significant advancement has been made in gaming hardware.

Why can't you simply return it? It's not like software where once you open it you're stuck with it. Unless you are outside the store's return policy time period (and I am assuming you are not as it came out less than 7 days ago)you should be able to return it directly to the store. For this reason alone, I will be buying mine from a store that has an awesome return policy such as Walmart, Kmart or Target.

Mine has 3: 2 very close to the top of the screen, and one somewhere near the middle. I swear, though, that you will NOT notice them unless you are specifically looking to find them. Even though there are dead pixels on mine, I would not consider it defective at all.

No, they weren't. There are always going to be dead pixels here and there but not on this scale. Also, the PSP costs $250. And the launch titles are kind of naff. Not that the DS had a great launch lineup or anything. Both were too expensive at launch.
The sample size here is tiny and thus completely unscientific, but I don't remember 25% exchanges of GBA's or DS's. The original batch of Famicoms made the PSP look like gold, but no returns were refused.
Compare the burn out rate of PS/PS2 to other systems. If you have good luck with them they have some nice games, but I don't feel that they are worth it.
Play what you like, but I don't censor my opinions. People don't censor their opinions about other companies all that much either.
I don't talk that way about Sony just to piss people off. I say those things because I believe them to be valid.
I'm dropping out of this thread now. I gave my take on the situation already.

Yes, both systems had this problem. BUT BUT, I don't recall so many DS buyers having problems! It seems like almost every post on here I have been reading says that there is something wrong with their psp. I hear PSP's have been exchanged like 3 times! That's too many times.
But if it was only one time with nintendo, well then all hell would break loose.
Oh, well. The PSP does look sweet though!

Sold 50 units first day through my store, only one came back. One dead pixel, smack in the center of the screen. Couldn't help but notice it, so I replaced it. So far, already proving a more reliable system than the PS2. :-)

Personally, I'll wait till a price drop and after all the hoopla dies down a bit. That oughta give time for Sony to correct the dead pixel problem.
And I think that their dead pixel policy should be the same as Nintendo's regarding the DS: the minute there's any dead pixel, within the warranty period, the system can be returned and exchanged.

I have tried. For some fooked up reason they won't take it back for an exchange or a refund because it only has one dead pixel. I guess it must share the same policy as when you buy an LCD screen, and it must have 3-4 dead pixels for them to exchange it. The more I play it the more it becomes noticeable, I'm sure it's because I know it's there since none of my friends noticed it until I pointed it out. It may be due to it's location at the top right corner of the screen...Still though, It doesn't changed the fact that I have a defected unit and I can't return it. :( I have thought of ebaying it off and marking it as a PSP with a dead pixel...But I can't imagine the loss I may receive on the money I spent.
I guess my only option really is to wait it out and hope for more dead pixels soon. Someone told me to purposely damage the unit so it would look defective...But I don't know...That's a little to risky. Then I was told to buy another one and replace my defected one in the box and return it....I don't want to get screwed though... :/

Well, I just read that article, and it doesn't look like they really want to help the problem all that much.
I think your best bet is to buy another one, and then put your defective PSP in there and return it. I do think that this is somewhat wrong, but since you spent $250+ on it, and they won't give you a refund, I would do it.

Are you sure that price is correct. I think you meant $369.99 CAD plus tax. It goes for $250 USD and if that is the correct price Wal-Mart is loosing about $40 CAD off each purchase. I'm also pretty sure Sony was specifically denying the solo sale of the PSP value pack in Canada so they could sell that Gretzky game. If that price is true I know about a dozen people who will head over to Wal-Mart right now.

The square button issue shouldn't exist in North American PSPs; Sony for once addressed and fixed this problem I think, if anyone does have a bad square button I’d like to know about it. As for the dead pixel problem, many LCD's suffer from this problem and are usually tested before sale to find any defects. This unit is so mass produced that more dead pixels than usual will appear, probably as high as 25% - 50% of all units. As the PSP phases itself in the problem might dissipate but it may not as well. The problem is much bigger than it should be, Sony as I've stated several times prior doesn't care about their customers one bit. This is a cheaply built system for a consoleish price, therefore like with the Playstation home consoles before it this unit is made to fit the price and will break very easily or come already broken as many of you on your second and third PSPs have already found out. Sony will not fix the unit for you unless there are 6 or more dead pixels in a row or in a square pattern. Now if they do accept your broken PSP for fixing you have to send it in to them, pay for shipping both ways and be without it for 6 - 8 weeks which is just ridiculous. Now if you are planning on buying one be sure to get it from a store that accepts returns because many many stores will not accept returns on the PSP and will not even offer you a warranty and for good reason. The Microplay's here in Ottawa do not except returns on the unit and offer no warranty. I'm not sure about EB's but I'm sure Best Buy and Wal-Mart will accept returns. The other two major Video Game companies don’t act this way. If your DS has a dead pixel or some other problem Nintendo will send you a brand new one checked for all possible defects via rush 3 day or less delivery for free and gives you 21 days to return the broken one back to them for free and with no questions asked. Microsoft isn’t as forgiving as Nintendo is but are still leaps and bounds ahead of Sony. With that whole power cord issue Microsoft offered to send every Xbox owner a new one. Now that issue is bigger than Microsoft is willing too officially announce because then they would have to recall as many as 5 million Xbox’s and they don’t want to do that so this is the cheap alternative, but at least there doing something about it conveniently and for free which is more than I can say about Sony. Seriously Sony needs to grow up and realize that they’re customers are their most important asset and stop making cheap crap.

Read my previous post. Sony won't replace your system easily if at all. Nintendo is so good with their customers they will accept a minor broken system for replacement if you aren't happy with it. Sony is fucking disgusting and deserves all the criticism they get and then some. You have a lot of learning to do about Sony and their business practices. And we are not Sony haters just annoyed customers who are fed up with Sony's stupidness.

I agree it is a very nice looking piece of hardware and your lucky yours came undamged, I just hope Sony changes their business practices soon so their current sort of negligence towards broken hardware disappears.
