View Full Version : What would you think of a true Castlevania RPG?

I'm a huge fan of everything Castlevania, always have been. One of my first few games for the NES were Castlevania and Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse. I love Symphony of the Night it is very long and very challenging, Konami completely outdid themselves there. Dracula X for the PC Engine is my favourite though and most other fans agree, I just hope it gets rereleased soon in North America or rather for the first time here. :-P
Well I was wondering what it would be like to have a Castlevania RPG. Now I know Symphony of Night is sort of like an RPG with the weapons changing and the leveling which is great but that style is more like Metroid or at least that's the common comparison. I was thinking of a game more like a real time RPG with more realistic experiences but keeping the same over the top boss battles etc. Well let me know what you think. For some more insight I suggest you read my post on the Best Castlevania Game thread right here:

I have also included a more complete poll than the one on that thread.

Yeah ... that would probably be the greatest thing ever, James.
Even moreso if it were in 2D, but there would be absolutely no chance of that ever happening. It's always nice to dream, though.

Well this is gonna get ugly...but many here at DP felt that turning the CastleVania series into an Action/RPG was the worse idea ever.
I, on the other hand, do not care, it's CastleVania for godsakes...it's never a dull moment regardless of which genre it chooses.

I'd have to see it first before I judge.
I'm really tired of the growning trend though of non-RPG game series releasing RPG titles to cash in on the craze though. It was cute when Mario RPG came out, but now alluva sudden we have crap like a Mega Man RPG and a Lord of the Rings RPG and a Virtua Fighter RPG. It all seems more like a bunch of lame attempts to cash in on both a franchise name and the current popularity of RPGs, rather than an actual contribution to good RPGs.

No Castlevania RPGs, please. The Metroidvania games are close enough as it is without taking it that next (unnecessary) step.
Keep in mind, though, this is coming from a guy who wants a return to the "old school vampire killing jam" style of Castlevania.

I agree series should stop trying to cash in on RPGs etc. with bad games. But it's okay to try as long as they’re good. Super Mario RPG is one of the best games ever let alone being one of the best RPGs ever. Castlevania Symphony of the Night falls into the same boat as being one of the best games ever. I personally don't care what genre they throw a game in as long as it doesn't ruin it and as long as it’s a good game. Virtua Quest is one of the worst most despicable games I've seen in a long time, I have no idea what Sega was injecting when they came up with that one. MegaMan shouldn't have been made into an RPG but there are so many of them now and they're so popular I don't think Capcom is going to stop. Just as long as it's not a card battle game I'll be happy, although Baten Kaitos is pretty good.

Maybe you're right, I don't know. We probably should stop trying to reinvent series and just stick to the basics but as long as it works and produces a good game what's the harm. I also would like to see an original style Castlevania game released again, the N64 was the last we saw of that and it had problems. This is why Dracula X should be released over here as another Castlevania Chronicles pakage or something. We should also start up developement on Resurrection again or something similar.

Well, Dracula X was released for the SNES. (A lot of people are bitter about it, though.) In fact, I think it is missing from your list.

So... why is it on the poll? and why would it get a vote?
Anyways, my favorite is Dracula's Curse.

I voted for PS1 Symphony of the Night. Castlevania 3 is a close second,my favorite nes game. As far as a Castlevania RPG goes i'd love to see it as long as it is well done(like Super Mario Rpg) and not like Lord of the Rings:the third age. I like all of the new Metroid style Castlevanias but I'd like to see a brand new game that was more like the nes Castlevanias. I'd also like to see a Castlevania for the PSP. It would give me some real incentive to purchase one.
I would love to see a turn-based Castlevania RPG. Hell, I'd love to see any turn-based RPG. They seem to be in short supply lately. Everything is an action RPG.

I voted for castlevania 3 on Nes. I had a lot of fun with that game back in 1990. It scared the hell out of me

Why it's on the poll, don't know. Why it got a vote? Because I didn't see Dracula X for the SNES there. :P
It sounded like C:R was gonna be a lot better than the N64 games. Those screenshots looked good. It was one of the reasons I bought a Dreamcast for. Then sadly it got cancelled. :(

I didn't add it to the list because it's just a terrible rehash of the original game for the PC Engine. So rather than adding a game no one would vote for anyway I decided to just have the PC Engine version which most people will agree with. To do a fair comparison of the differences between the two games, Dracula X for Nintendo's Super Nintendo is like Resident Evil 2 for Tiger's Game.com and Dracula X for NEC's PC Engine Super CD System is like Resident Evil 4 for Nintendo's Gamecube. So you see why it's not on the list. But just to make sure I suggest for everyone to go out there and play them both. Unfortunately for us they're both rare because one's terrible and didn't sell very well and the other one's really good so everyone wants a copy.

There I added Dracula X for the SNES as well as a rerelease for the PC I forgot about. That should put the list in everyones favor.

By that comparison one would say the first NES Castlevania was garbage as well. I see Dracula X as a straight souped up action game in the style of the first NES game. It certainly wasn't the same game as Rondo. It's sorta like trying to compare AVG1 to Super VG. One is a bit more elaborate though both aren't exactly alike when you play them either. Rehash would be like Resident Evil 1, 2 and 3.
