Ways to fix PS2 at home

PS2 got DREs a few weeks ago. (I've only had it for about 8 mos.) I would like to know if there is any way to fix it at your home (i.e. not sending it to Sony). I've heard turning it on its side or upside down help. Tried them. They do, but it loads much slower and is prone to freezing. So... Any tips?

Try taking the bottom of the disks that are causing the DRE's, and putting tape on them like this:

This worked for me, you may want to try that before dismantling your console or sending it to SONY.

Ummm... that would be ALL of the discs. And before I try this, would it damage the disc to remove the tape?

No, the data is on top of the disc, taping the bottom wont hurt. Although, you may scratch it taking the tape off. Sorry to hear about your DRE's, I have yet to get any (3 years old)

personally i'd just send it into Sony and have them fix it instead of screwing around with things you don't know about. It only cost about 10 dollars to ship it and the repairs are free, that is unless you void your warranty by opening it up or something.

Would using a CodeBreaker void the warranty?

No.. The only way to void the warranty is by opening up the playstation itself or by letting the 90 day peroid pass by. Everything else sould be fair game. That is of course assuming you didn't drop it on the floor or hit it with a large hammer.

If he had it for 8 months the warranty is long gone by now.

I sent my Launch Day PS2 in last month (it had been opened) & no one said anything about it.

One thing that helped for awhile is to rotate the white wheel inside (nickel-sized, just behind the disc tray) which adjusts the tilt of the disc tray in relation to the laser. I did that 2 separate times & it helped.
