I really liked Mortal Kombat it was pretty faitful story to the games and it was really well made.

Mortal Kombat was truest to the orginal storylines. MK: Anniliation seemed too rushed, Resident Evil used the ideas from the games and went their own way with them. Super Mario Bros and Street Fighter's master tapes should be burned never to be seen again (Since when is Street Fighter a war movie?!). Tomb Raider was ok though.

On that list, I think that RE was the only film that wasn't loaded with suck.

And my position on VG movies is "true to the plot" be damned. I mean, Jebus, who writes VG plots anyway? Did you really want a Mario movie where he jumps over turtles and knocks mushrooms out of blocks? Oh wait--of course--he has to rescue the princess!

Disclaimer: I never watched the Mario Bros. movie, as I had already had my USDA RDA of suck that week.

I'd say that it had more problems than that. Christopher Lambert (IMO) was a MUCH better Raiden than the turkey they got in Annihilation. Jonny Cage dies right at the beginning? etc..

That was the best part! The guy who played Raiden after he "transformed" looked like Guile actually...

I didn't mind the new guy, actually I wouldnt have even cared if he was in both movies. The only thing that bugs me is when they have two actors play the same character.

Right on! I feel the same way. For example, I'd really enjoy watching a JRR Tolkien based movie that wasn't about the LOTR or Hobbit Series... just a move that contained the entire theme but took it a totally new direction.

I enjoyed Resident Evil. I think I enjoyed it because I was 100% ready for it to completly suck (I actually rented it thinking man is this movie going to suck), but I was suprised to find out that it was actually decent.

You forgot to add a few movies:

Double Dragon
Wing Commander
Final Fantasy

Wing Commander really pissed me off i mean - oh what the hell is this

From a website:

Well, right near the end, private detective City Hunter (Jackie Chan) gets knocked into a Street Fighter II machine during a fight. His opponent in the scene is transformed into Ken Masters, and Jackie alternates between being E. Honda and Chun Li. Two game-playing passersby are transformed into Guile and Dhalsim, and the three team up to defeat the "evil" Ken.

I saw MK 2wice in the theaters and that is saying a lot for a video game movie. The boobs in Tomb Raider where better, but the action and the music in MK decided the vote for me.

I say Tomb raider was the best out all. Who ever thinks Mortal Kombat was true to the story must dont know anything about the game. They made the story passive so everyone can watch it(kids). All about the Hollywood BULLSHIT. Same goes for SF.Guile was never the main character in the sf world. Like I said, Hollywood messes up every game to movie story...HOLLYWOOD BULLSHIT :D

Note to Hollywood: Street Fighter is NOT a war movie!

Note to Kaine: You already said that in an earlier post.

Note to Self: You're wearing one blue sock and one black sock. That's not very cool.

Note to LeeFurie: I'll take Mortal Kombat just because it's the kind of movie that's always fun to go back to. I really ENJOYED Resident Evil, though. And IMO Milla Jovovich looked way hotter in RE than Angelina Jolie looked in Tomb Raider (which I thought was a boring movie).

Therefore, it's the best video game flick out there. Simple as dat.

Ah, I'm going to be faithful to Mortal Kombat here. I loved both it and Annihilation... my dad is actually friends with the raiden they used in Annihilation and on a side note, I directed Van Damm's Nephew in one of my short films that some of you saw... "The Loonies." That was a thrill for me actually... lol.

Would someone actually choose Final Fantasy as their favorite movie from this bunch? Man I SO wanted to like that movie. I even watched it twice thinking the second time I would "get it". A dismal effort, IMHO.

Funny you should say that DP - I just voted for it.

To be fair I haven't seen Resident Evil yet, but I doubt it'll get the nod anyway. For some reason, despite how much I hear about how it sucks, I love that movie. It's the only VG Based movie I own on DVD.

I'm glad someone likes it! I don't think I'm bright enough to understand the plot or something. That's why the non-stop killing in Resident Evil or the chop-socky B movie plot of Mortal Kombat appeal to me so much!

Best: Cloak and Dagger

Worst: FF (I spent $20.00 on the DVD to watch 90 minutes of crap)

mortal kombat: yeah, cool, but mh CHEAAAP
mk2: urgh
RE: very cool, though it's not to game-based :(
SF2: is this the "real" movie? i haven't seen that one to be honest, but i really really like the anime
smb: so silly :(
tomb raider: nice, but i don't like angelina jolie
ff: mhh didn't really like it
wing commander: this one is so cool, though it's not done very good, but it's fun in my oppinion
double dragon: mh, did i see this one? don't know, so if i did, it's not even good enough to remember :D

When 'Max Payne' and "House of the Dead' come out... We'll talk.

The only reason I wanna see Max Payne is because it's being done buy Shawn Ryan (The Shield).

But since I'm being forced to choose... They all sucked.

Tomb Raider was only worth watching because of Angelina. :o

I'm glad someone likes it! I don't think I'm bright enough to understand the plot or something.

I don't think the plot is necessarily thought provoking or anything. But I do think it stays true to the FF formula and I love the animation.

I'd like to know who else voted for FF...

That'd be me. I didn't find Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within all that deep either, but I enjoyed the action sequences, I liked the characters (General Hein cracked me up), and I found the script and general storyline to be far better than I expected. There was also something refreshing about a movie that mixed a futuristic atmosphere with metaphysical themes, instead of going for the technology-heavy feel that science fiction films usually employ.

I do wish that Square had opted to make The Spirits Within a game instead of a film, though. Imagine how great it would be to explore a Phantom-infested New York City as you would an RPG dungeon . . .

What is the best videogame movie? That's funny. Kinda like the Simpson's joke that goes "what two popular characters died in the past year?" The answer, of course, is "if you picked Bleeding Gums Murphy and Dr. Marvin Monroe, you would be wrong. They were never popular."

There never has been such a thing as a good videogame movie. Some are wretched, some are lousy, and some are merely mediocre. It only helps that Hollywood's formula movies are so terrible in their own right. That said, Final Fantasy was the best of the bunch, but even that film was somewhat lifeless.

Why does no one ever mention "Joy Sticks!"?

I must find this film, just to see if Joe Don Baker shoots up an arcade at the end.

By the way, both Street Fighter: The Animated Movie and Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture are tolerably well-made and fun to watch in a shallow sort of way.

Wavelflack
01-27-2003, 11:44 PM
I've got it, and Mr. Baker is no Mitchell. From a "classic gamer" standpoint, it's a fantastic revisitation of the early eighties arcades. Looking at it now seems like ridiculous exaggeration of the popularity and lunacy present at those early arcades, but it really WAS like that! People really DID go fucking nuts over the sight of a new machine, etc. I love watching the arcade scenes in Tron for the same reason: Nostalgia.

Anyway, the meat of the movie is fucking ridiculous, but it an entertaining manner. It's so juvenile that you have no choice but to love it.

Do you know what game related movie totally rocked?
Street Fighter II: The animated movie.
The live action one sucked, but the animated one was sweet. There was this awesome fight scene between Vega and Chung Li in her apartment. Chung Li ended up destroying all the furniture in her apartment. Vega ended up getting Chung Li pretty bloody.
Chung Lie also pulled off a Matrix move there she runs up the wall and backflips over Vega. The best part about the whole thing was that this whole fight was occuring while Chung Li was in her Nightie.
Know what I'm talking about fellas???
The movie did a good job of incorporating all the charactors. DJ and Camie even made an appearance. If you havent seen it and are a fan of the game, I would suggest renting it.

hooray for first my first post...

Too bad the Sonic animated movie isnt there, that was pretty good (except for the strage robotnic-sarah relationship).
My vote vote went to Wing Commander. I really, really liked that movie. Its like wwII in space!

And the sound that those machine gun type weapons the fighters had is like a drug.
I wonder if its out on dvd...

It hasn't happened yet and it doesn't look good.

There have been a couple sucessful games which were first movies.

Honestly the most sucessful Video Game turned into movies would have to be the Pokemon movies. I know the Wizard did well at the box office. Does anyone know where you can find the final numbers for these movies?

A close second would have been mortal combat, then street fighter.

Jaker

Final Fantasy. 'Nuff said. Super Mario Bros. was about as being thrown out a window over and over and over again. And I ALMOST picked up Street fighter, just to see how crappy it was, but that would have been a waste of 2.00.

Jasoco
03-01-2004, 05:36 PM
I voted for Super Mario Bros like NintendoMan.

I also bought it recently for $7 off www.DeepDiscountDVD.com and even though there are no special features, it's a hell of a great flick. So what if it wasn't more like the games? At least there were references in it. ( LINK (http://jasoco.no-ip.com/smbmovie.php) )

In close second and third would be Tomb Raider and Resident Evil.

Dennis Hopper was just perfect as Koopa. If you actually take the time to watch it and appreciate it, you notice just how into his character he gets.

Iggy and Spike were great as the cousins.

Samatha Mathis made a great Daisy.

Once you get passed the total lack of a actual Mario-esque feel it is a better movie.

In fact, the world portrayed in the movie is more believable than the world portrayed in the actual games... *cough*

Any other movies based on a video game in recent months?I liked the first Tomb Raider movie. I actually plan on buying it on DVD today AND I have it TiVo'd. It's that good. A little cheesy, but I loved it. I haven't seen the second, but the trailers made me impressed. But I can't find it less than $20. Even at DeepDiscountEVE it's $20 marked down from $30 normally. $30?? Who sells it for $30? Oh well. Maybe one day it'll be on. I'll tell TiVo to scan HBO, Max and Starz for it.

I love my TiVo. :D

I haven't watched every movie based on a videogame but I've seen most of them and Mortal Kombat is the best IMO, followed buy Resident Evil, All I wanted to see was the famous hand stand in TR, all Jolie had to do was that handstand for me (filmed from behind of course, like the game :-P ) and I would hav been satisfied with the movie but noooooo, they decided to keep the hand stand out of the movie just like in the Saturn version of TR

I always enjoyed Double Dragon, which I voted for. Scott Wolf and Mark Dacascos may have had corny dialogue but they also had pretty good chemistry with each other. It reminded me a little bit of the three TMNT movies.

After that, I'd say Mortal Kombat I and II. Those and Super Mario Bros.

It's just the single funniest movie ever made, in the thin disguise of a serious action film. Van Damme's lack of being able to pull off an American accent convincingly just seals the deal.
