What the deuce is this? (Sega PODS)

Me and a friend of mine went raiding a Goodwill store yesterday, and he came across this odd Sega accessory...

It's white, with two separate pieces that are connected to the main unit with a cord, and all three have half globes on them. It has Sega PODS written on the top and the copyright is from 1994. Any clues?

Hmm...looks interesting. My local gamezone has had one CIB for a long time but I've never picked it up cause I believe it's quite pricey. Somewhere around 50 bucks....bit too much for me, even though I like collecting all things Sega related.

i have a set. i was in a goodwill and found them, when i bought them i was sure it was some sorta genesis controller 3-D motion sensing U-force style thing...needless to say i was dissapointed to learn its basically an overcomplicated simon. i've been holding onto them for the love of all things sega but maybe i should trade them off, they never leave my basement.
