View Full Version : Fictional References In Games (Other Games, Movies, etc.)

It's always quite amusing to me when I hear a game mentioned in a TV show, or see a Game Boy or something being played. We had a good thread about this recently.

Something else I get a kick out of is when OTHER games are mentioned in games, or TV shows, or something else fictional and popular. It makes the game seem even more real, and just adds a sureal feel to it, at least for me. ;)

Anyone know of any?

Here's some of my favorite examples to get started:

In Phantasmagoria 2 for the PC, the main character has several talks with a shrink. During one of the video clips after he's finished explaining some weird stuff in his life, he smiles and says "I know this must sound crazy, like something out of the X-Files!"

In Deadalus Encounter (PC and 3DO), your two human friends are talking about how they suddenly went from a ship to a alien planet. The guy goes "We must have ended up on their home planet somehow....maybe transported!" The girl looks at him, rolls her eyes, and says "Transported? You've been watching too many old Star Treks!"

I thought there was a N64 game I played at one time that also had a reference to the X-Files in it.

Check out the newest Timesplitters game. Some are direct, most are more just kinda-obvious joke references or just general cliches of various genres.

In Earthbound, Captain Strong mentions that he got stuck while playing Earthbound. There's something to think about.

How about the part in MGS where Psycho Mantis tells you what games you've been playing? That... maybe... sorta qualifies.

I know some concrete examples, but I'm too tired to think of them. I know exact what this topic is referring to though.

Let me be the first to link you here:

This site has a huge database of cameos and references in video games. I even submitted a few here & there. It's good stuff.

Thinking of these off the top of my head, but the Donkey Kong country games had all sorts of references and snips of other nintendo systems and sounds in them. Mario RPG had I guess you could call it a cameo of Mario from the first Mario bros. game and a hidden boss from Final Fantasy 2. Breath of Fire had an cameo of Chun-lee and Chrono Trigger had Vicke and Wedge in it.

Favorite game spoken cameo of all time:

Fox Hunt:
While playing 21, the main character looks at his card and goes, "Hit or stand...HIT...or STAND...I often have that choice in Street Fighter..."

Others off the top of my head:

- In the TG16 version of Addams Family, Wednesday's assortment of items she floats towards you includes a NES deck

- WAY TOO MANY GAMES that have billboards/ads for other games

- Snatcher has the Metal Gear mech as his little robot buddy, and in the bar scene are several famous Konami characters

- Techincally Rhapsody, being aware of itself, as the little fairy character tells Rhaposdy that if she loses the fight that "they will have to sit through that last cinema all over again!". LOL

- Street Fighter Alpha's Son Son stage has a SF: The Animated Movie Poster on it's front window.

- Any Capcom/Street Fighter/ Vs game or KoF game usually has tons of cameos of characters and locales featured.

- Pac-Man makes an appearance on the one wall in Mortal Kombat

- The lead character in Final Fantasy 9 looks at a HUGE sword that looks exactly like Cloud's in a weapon shop and comments, "I know someone who has that same weapon..."

- Chun-Li sits in the background of Final Fight 2's China stage.

- Shenmue's Arcade and Home Saturn. You play a game where you play a character playing a game.

- In TG16's Chew-man-Fu if you perfrom a certain task, a mini PC Engine power-up appears.

- Metal Gear Solid 1/2/3's various Posters, PlayStation/Game Cube in the programmer's room, the memopry card trick, and the Raiden Mask, and Solid Snake in MGS 2 pointing to his bandana and going "Don't worry, infinite ammo" was a great 'self-aware' joke.

- I think in Streets of Rage 2 the arcade machines in the one level have the abbreviated letters of a game...too fuzzy...

- Pac-Man can play himself in Pac-Man Adventures 2.

That's all I can think of right now...

In "Magic Knight Rayearth" when you look at a poster in Tokyo Tower it makes a vague reference to "Clash of the Titans"

The arcade machines have Bare Knuckle 2 on them. Which is the Japanese version of Streets of Rage 2. I wonder why that was never translated?

Fallout 2 had a couple of Monty Python-related random encounters.

"You've been playing Super Mario Sunshine!"

Maybe it's just me, but I found that creepy as hell... x_x

Did they really update that for Twin Snakes? Man, that's awesome.

MGS3 has TONS of direct stuff about old movies, mostly sci-fi, from Para-Medic. I also read an interview where Hideo Kojima said that some pose of EVA's was pure Fujiko from Lupin III. :D (Fitting, since I never liked Fujiko much either)

Baldur's Gate has quite a few. A crazy character says, "Tell me 'bout the rabbits, George!". Khalid goes "Ch..ch...heh heh...ch-ch-ch-Chia!". Bah, I can't remember them all.

I've just been playing Fallout 2 (quiet, I'm slow), and at one point, you can go down a well where there's lots of coins on the ground. If you pick one up, text appears: "This one was MY wish. And I'm taking it back. I'm taking them all back."

Obscure references and smartass item descriptions ("before tables, people had to keep their stuff on the floor") are all I need, man.

Fujiko from Lupin III. :D

Speaking of Fujiko, she was also in the game Incredible Crisis for the PS. Also would like to add that Kid Niki made an appearance in Kickle Cubicle if you did a code at the title screen, and Nights make a cameo in the Sonic Adventure pinball game.

Where? I've almost beat Incredible Crisis, and I don't recall seeing her anywhere.

You supposedly give her a back rub on the fairest wheel.

LOL

That's Fujiko? I always thought that it was just a Generic Anime Woman. I guess I'll look harder next time I play it.
