View Full Version : Systems You've Never Played

After reading GunPanther's topic about his Import Saturn collection I was thinking to myself that I have never played a Saturn before. So what systems have you never played before?
Phosphor Dot Fossils

I've never played a Channel F or an RCA Studio II; really need to correct that. I'll take one of each, please.
More recent machines I've never laid hands on: Xbox (really), Virtual Boy, Saturn, SMS, Sega CD, Neo Geo, TG-16. Hell, some of those I've never seen, let alone played.
I lost my Vectrex virginity at last year's OKGE, and I've been drooling over the very thought of owning one ever since.

Channel F. I won't ever play it either, it will just sit in my closet. Forevermore. Such a POS.

Systems I've never played, and why
Intellivision - my parents didn't want to cough up the dough for this puppy. We had a Atari 2600 with a number of games, and that was good enough.
Colecovision - my dad decided to buy an Atari 800XL computer instead.
Sega Master System - Actually, I really was never even aware of this machine. I had a NES system, I wasn't really into video games, and never saw a commercial or anything regarding the Master System. First time I saw it was when I went to Toys R US looking for new NES sports games. At the time I was a casual sports gamer. I saw the strange white boxes and the weird looking system, and thought...hmmm, what the heck is that?
TurboGrafx-16 CD System - Not that I didn't want one really bad. I had a TG-16 system, but the CD unit was just way out of my price range at the time. Didn't have that kinda dough to throw around on a system that only had a couple of decent CD's, at least at the time it only had a couple of decent CD's.
SuperGrafx - Didn't really know much about this system, it was an oddity to me, if I lived in Japan, I probably would have tried to get one, but very few games, and the cost made it a non factor.
Neo Geo CD system - I had a Neo Geo Gold System at one point. For about 4 months, back in the day, but I never had a Neo Geo CD based system.
GameBoy - I never had one of those black and white gameboys. Never interested me, with that horrible screen they had. I only had a Atari Lynx for about 2 weeks.
TurboExpress - Actually kinda wanted one of these, but again, the price made it easy to avoid.
NEC-FX - Never had one, never had much interest in one. Really, to this day, I can't understand what the hell it is.
FM Towns Marty - This looked more like a PC to me, and I'm more of a console guy. Plus only a few games I would have wanted to play.
Pioneer Laseractive - This thing was interesting, but only if you were super rich, and I certainly wasn't.
Wondermega or JVC X'Eye - I liked the idea of S-Video output, and the all in one design, but wasn't enough for me to cough up the scratch.
Color GameBoy - At one point I almost got one of these used, and actually would be interested in getting one now, but the games still cost too much for my tastes. It would mainly be for my 5 year old.
hmmm, can't really think of anything else.
Oh, I forgot about a few of them.
Atari 5200 - We had a Atari 800XL computer, so it was basically the same thing, right?
Atari 7800 - Didn't really know this thing existed at the time it was out. I really wasn't into home video games at this time. Played some games in the arcade, but wasn't playing any home games until I got my NES.
Jaguar CD system - I had a Jag, but by the time the CD unit finally saw the light of day, I knew the Jag was a dying system, and I dumped my Jag. Still have never got a Jag CD system, and damn they are still quite pricey.
Neo Geo Pocket - never had one, never really even seen one.
Wonderswan - same as above
Game.com - same as above
Nintendo DS - No games that really interest me, although I do like the screen for GBA games. I just wish it was more light weight and could lose the other screen. I think the other screen is nothing more than a silly gimmick.
Sony PSP - Anybody want to donate about $325 to me?

As much as I hate to admit it, there are a ton of systems that I have never played, and many that I have never even seen.
I've never played anything that is older than NES (other than Atari 2600). I've only played Sega Master System once in my life. I have only played Saturn once as well. Most of the obscure systems I have never played (Turbo Grafx 16, 3DO,Etc). I have also only played Xbox a handful of times.

PSP
Intellivision
RCA Studio II
Channel F
Turbografx-CD
FM Towns Marty
CD32
SuperGrafx
Atari Lynx
Leisurevision
Aquarius
GP32
All the really obscure stuff, like RDI Halcyon, Casio Loopy, Bandai Pippin, Adventurevision, etc.
I've played quite a few of the "lesser-known" systems over the years. Wonderswan, CD-i, 3D0, Neo Geo CD, Turbo Express, Jaguar, Vectrex, Odyssey2, TI99, Game.com...

I've never played a lot of the earlier consoles like Channel F, RCA Studio, Odyssey for some pretty basic reasons. 1. I was too little so I got one or two game machines max. 2. They weren't sold where I lived. :P
I've never played: a Bally Astrocade, an Atari Jaguar, 3DO, and the home version of the Neo Geo. I wouldn't mind trying them though :)
[More recent machines I've never laid hands on: Xbox (really), Virtual Boy, Saturn, SMS, Sega CD, Neo Geo, TG-16. Hell, some of those I've never seen, let alone played.
Geezus H PDF... what have you been doing the past 20 years.. @_@ I understand some.. but lots of those aren't exactly esoteric consoles.. never played a TG16? a Saturn, an SMS!?! AN XBOX!?!?!? Did you just ignore these systems when they were popular? :)

Well...yeah. I just didn't like the look of most of what I was seeing out on those systems. Silly prejudice, I know.
Oh, and I do, in fact, live under a rock. Difficult to smuggle an Xbox into that tight a space.
I wouldn't mind test-driving the SMS, Saturn, TG16 or Neo Geo though, I have to admit. Partly because of the praise that's been heaped on 'em by folks here.

Out of all of those systems, only the Xbox is actually a popular system. The SMS,Saturn, and TG16 sold pretty poorly, and I never knew anyone that owned one. I played Saturn at Incredible Universe back when it was new, but all of my friends had a Playstation or N64 (myself).

I think it would be easier to say what I HAVE played. o_O
I never played anything pre-NES (yes, it's true), and I never played any later made Atari consoles either. In fact, I don't think I've played any American-made consoles. I haven't played any handhelds besides various forms of Game Boy and the Neo Geo Pocket Color. I haven't played any Japanese-exclusive consoles, and I haven't played the SMS, 32x, Neo Geo AES, and Neo Geo CD.
I think those categories cover nearly everything I haven't played. I guess the only company whose consoles I've all played is Nintendo (but even then I don't own and have barely played the Virtual Boy and DS).
Despite all that, I think I do have quite a few consoles. It's kinda amazing just how many different systems have been created when really only one or two consoles make it big each generation.

I think It would be better that I write the systems that I have touche.:D Well, lets star: Atari 2600, Nes, Snes, Genesis, Virtua Boy, Gamboy-standard-color-Advance, Saturn, Playstation, Playstation 2, Dreamcast, Xbox and Gamecube.
So, you can imaginate the consoles that I havent tried yet. Yes, it is a lot.

Besides the very obscure the list of which I have not played looks like:
Turboexpress
Neo Geo AES
Neo Geo CD
Game.com (I think I played it in a store once, but I'm not sure)
Atari 5200
PSP (In time I will.)
3DO (I played either 3DO or CDI not sure)
CDI
Nuon
Coleco Vision
Commodore 64 (If this counts)
Odyssey 1 or 2
TI99/4A (I have carts with nothing to play them on)

Point granted. But this aint no gamefaqs.com message board. ;) This is a die hard videogame collectors board... full of videogame collecting FREAKS who know of, and snag every console around that they can get their dirty little mitts on and never let them go. Yes. They sold poorly.. but WE were the ones buying them. It's only the mainstream gamers that passed on these consoles.
It's all about the games, and more consoles == more selection of games :) Personally I couldn't sit around with an NES knowing the SMS library was out there. I couldn't sit around with an SNES/Genesis knowing there was the TG16 library out there. I couldn't sit around with a psx knowing there was a Saturn library out there. These were the MAJOR consoles of their times.. albeit the losers of their respective sales wars.
But anyway, I'm just giving PDF a little shit ;) There's plenty o' consoles I haven't played myself like I said :D

Well, also, to put things in perspective: I sat out the NES era and the 16 bit era because my gaming had shifted to computers by then. For some reason it didn't occur to me until after my last post, wondering "Okay, wow, so I skipped huge scads of gaming history...what WAS I doing?" I was playing Taipan and Final Conflict and Ultima IV & V and doing a lot of BBS BS. I just wasn't using a console to do it.

This sounds like me as well, I didn't bother with the NES (because I had a C64 with an unlimited amount of "free" games), and during the Genesis/SNES era I had an Amiga.. and the same "free game" thing applied.
That said, the systems I haven't played yet (but oddly enough, I have games for some of them):
Channel F
RCA Studio 2
Arcadia
AMF-1000
Neo Geo Cart/CD
Virtual Boy (the one I got was broke :()
Wonderswan
Pippin (yes I'm reaching here)
Playdia
Game.com
and oddly enough all of these are on my "must get" list... so send em this way if you got em :D

Hmm, this is going to be a short list for me, if only because two years ago I set out to try and give ample time to as many systems as possible to see which ones I'd like.
Systems I haven't played:
Panasonic 3D0
Phillips CD-i
Atari Jaguar
NEC PCFX (oh but how I want one of these though)
Channel F
Odyssey (1)
... now add in all the super-obscure ones like the playdia, pippin, etc. But that's about it. I sort of miss the time I had 21 unique consoles at once, but then again, it's nice to have space too :P

Oooh, lesse - leaving aside the really obscure ones...
Channel F
RCA Studio II
Colecovision (want to remedy this one)
Vectrex (ditto)
Virtual Boy
Neo Geo AES
Neo Geo CD
CDI
3DO
WonderSwan
DS
PSP
Think that just about covers it
edit: oh, 5200 aswell. Not that it was released over here anyway...

-SMS (just got a PowerBase Converter - just need games)
-GamePark 32
-3DO (just for imports)
-NeoGeo CD (consolized MVS if I can do it on the cheap)
-NGPC
Those are the ones I haven't tried, definitely want and will eventually get. Some, of course, sooner than others.

Wow, my list is much longer than I originally suspected. I liked Anthony1's reasons he gave, so here's my list with a little commentary.
Neo Geo AES
Neo Geo CD
Vectrex
RDI Halcyon
FM Towns Marty
Channel F
RCA Studio II
Nintendo DS
PSP
Sega Nomad
Atari 7800
Wonderswan
Atari Lynx
3DO
Jaguar CD
Game.Com
ColecoVision
I don't know that I've actually even seen any of those consoles in person, unless they were on display in someone's house I visited (I'm sure Icbrkr had a few of them sitting on his shelf). Me and my friends basically stuck to the mainstream stuff (it IS Oklahoma, not exactly trend-setting USA).
SMS
Sega CD
Sega 32X
Those are consoles I own but don't own hookups for and therefore have never even fired up.
Virtual Boy
I own a VB but have never turned it on. It's complete and working and fixing to be sold since I just have no interest in it.
-- Honorable Mention --
Intellivision
TG16
TI-99/4A
I have played each of these consoles/computers exactly ONCE. The TI99 was in '86, the Intellivision was in '83 or so, and the TG16 was last year at Icbrkr's house.
--
In my defense, I have to plea the same as PDF and a few others. I spent the majority of the 80's playing Apple II, Commodore 64 and PC games. I got my first NES in the 90's and a SNES when I worked at Best Buy in 94/95.

Atari 5200/7800- nearly bought meself a 7800 off ebay recently though, scuppered by lack of personal space
Neo Geo AES/CD- scuppered by lack of £££!
CDi- scuppered by the fact that it's shit.
Jag CD (although I do onw a busted one, does that count?)
PC Engine CD (can't get hold of them anywhere that I've looked 8-) )
Vectrex... alas.
Colecovision
Intellivision
Virtual Boy (I wear glasses and I'm not a headache whore)
Surprisingly few given I've only been a serious gamer/collector for a couple of years.
Should mention one of my "have played" ones is tenuous- I technically haven't played a Wonderswan but I do have one currently in transit to me.

Intellivision
Jaguar
Neo-Geo AES/MVS
Odyssey
Odyssey 2

I'm really surprised to see so many people that have never played a Master System. What the hell? I know it was never even close to #1 in North America, but it's not like it was a total flop or really obscure. A lot of major games of the era were on Master System (Out Run, Shinobi, Phantasy Star, Alex Kidd, etc.). Plus, two later popular systems, Genesis and Game Gear, had the ability to play SMS games with an adapter.
One system I've never played that hasn't been mentioned yet (although I'm sure most of you haven't played it) is the Atari XE Game System. In fact I don't think I've ever even seen an XE and I'm not sure what they look like, or entirely what sort of system it is. I mean, I know it's a console, but I don't know how it controlled, or what games were on it, or anything; the only thing I know about it is that its design was based on an Atari computer.

Well, I've played a dozen or so but I've never played anything older than a NES(own a 2600 though, but it's missing a piece on the cord) and Atari console or the Lynx, the TG-16 and any of it's attachments, SMS, Saturn, and Pica for Sega stuff. I've played everything from Nintendo expect VB which I own but it's missing the piece that goes on the back of the controller. I've played the system, but I haven't touched it in many years. I used to own one that eventually broke. I discarded the system, later sold off the games but have never seen this console since. It's been several years.
Maybe it is just my locale but I don't consider the system all that common. I've never come across one and I've been actively looking in thrift shops, pawn shops, lawn sales and flea markets regularly for a long time. The only way I will ever see one again is if I buy it on Ebay or the forums here.
My guess is that some of the people who have never played it have also never found one anywhere.

In fact I don't think I've ever even seen an XE and I'm not sure what they look like, or entirely what sort of system it is. I mean, I know it's a console, but I don't know how it controlled, or what games were on it, or anything; the only thing I know about it is that its design was based on an Atari computer.
I got my first system, an NES, in 1989 when I was only 8. I remember telling my parents I didn't want a Sega or an Atari. I didn't know enough about videogames to know the actually names of the system. But at that time, I must have been referring to the Master System and the 2600 or 7800. In 1989, it was all about Mario. I played it at my aunt's house and had to have it. I would love to get a Master system now though. I never had anything against it.

I suppose that is a possibility. I live in the Bay Area, where Sega's US headquarters is located (and Nintendo's isn't); perhaps this area is more Sega-leaning than elsewhere. The one remaining local/independent used game store left, 4Jays, always has a decent amount of Master System stuff in stock, and the one that closed down a couple years ago (Matt's) always had plenty of SMS stuff too. Also I see SMS at flea markets all the time. I would certainly consider it far, far more common than Atari 7800, which is downright scarce. Actually, I'd also say SMS is more common around here than Turbografx, and even like, Coleco and Intellivision.

It must be the region. I was the only kid in my school who owned a Sega Master System, that I know of. I can safely say that because there was nobody I could "swap" games with (borrowing), meaning the only games I could play were the ones I owned. Too bad the system broke. I'm really disappointed I've never been able to play it since. I used to have a really good library of SMS stuff but I got discouraged when the system went kaput and sold/traded the entire lot of games for other stuff.
When looking for games in my area, I usually see the Colecovision, Intellivision, Genesis, Saturn, Dreamcast, Odyssey 2, everything Nintendo and most of the Atari consoles. I've even seen the Neo Geo system a couple times and would have bought it, even if I couldn't reasonably afford it, but I didn't have the funds on hand. Damn it.
I'm 26 and have been "hunting", off and on, for about nine years or so all over my state. About the only well known systems I have never laid eyes on in my hunts (locally) have been the Master System, Turbografx and also the Atari Jaguar. With the Jaguar, it didn't matter since I bought it off the internet after having found a used game ("Checkered Flag") in a second hand store several years ago.
What that means is that someone in my area either has the Jaguar that went with the game or used to have it. I know the person is nearby and I wish they'd get rid of the thing, if they haven't already, so I can harvest it for my collection.
I have seen the Turbografx games pop up fairly often, however, so it means someone nearby has that system, too, or used to have it. It drives me crazy wondering if the person still has it or if they got rid of it a long time ago and I missed out. I keep checking hoping to find that type of item in my stores.
I think it is indicative of my region. I have a lot of friends nearby who are gamers, none of whom have ever heard of this place. My collection of systems and games is pretty small, but I still can't get over the awe on a lot of their faces when they are checking out the Atari Jaguar, 3DO and Sega Saturn that I own. These people are all Nintendo or Sony fanboys, but they always tell me I am the only guy they know of who has systems like the Jaguar. You wouldn't believe how many offers I keep getting from casual gamers I work with or hang out with who want to buy the Jaguar or 3DO off of me. It's crazy. Maybe I should show them the Rooms of Doom here at DP so they can see a real collection LOL

A lot of the more exotic stuff (for the most part):
Jaguar CD
Sharp X68000
MSX
Sega Nomad
Colecovision (though I've held the controller)
FM Marty Towns
PC Engine/TurboGrafx console series (no local release, hell, I haven't even SEEN one in the flesh).
Atari 5200
GP32 series
I've played Vectrex and Intellivision through emulators, but I haven't actually laid hands on the real thing.
Technically, I've been in the presence of a 3DO and Neo Geo AES, but I didn't actually play them, only saw them running a demo so I guess you could add those.
I have actually played a Virtual Boy, for about 5 minutes. I wish I COULD list it under consoles I've never played. :-P
There's piles of other rare/weird stuff that I haven't played, but I cbf listing them.

Basically like most of the stuff Pre-NES, and some of the other Sega and Nintendo systems.

Man, this thread is painful to read. So many people denied so many good games/systems.
Anyway, I have yet to play these:
PC-FX
Game.com
Halcyon
GP32
Zodiac
Gamate
Cassette Vision
I didn't include system variations such as the CDX.

Amiga
C64
Sega CD
32X
Collecovsion
Neo-Geo
And far too many others to list. Wow. A lot of systems I haven't touched.

Believe it or not.. my hands have never touched a Game Boy, of any kind.. ever.
This kind of reminds me of that "What famous game series have you NEVER played?" thread awhile back where I revealed to the world that I had never played a single Tomb Raider game.
I guess some things just aren't interesting to me.

I can't think of any others. So everything else I haven't played yet. Much of them I have at least seen at a store or online. Many I hadn't even heard of until I started coming across information in magazines and online about systems from the 80s and 90s I didn't know of, like the Master System and Turbo-Grafx and 3DO. I've also never played an actual 2600. The closest I've gotten is the Plug N Play TV Games joystick. My boyfriend STILL refuses to hook up his 2600 on the argument that he is "preserving it." But I lived under a rock for most of my young life, which is partly the reason I started collecting in 2000. So I will eventually get my hands on a Channel F and a CD-I and such, but I just need more space and more money

I don't really count consoles that weren't released in the US, like the FM Towns Marty or the PC-FX. I'm really not into imports, I don't have enough room. :)
Fairchild Channel F (I saw one as a kid, but it wasn't plugged in)
RCA Studio II
VIC-20
Emerson Arcadia 2001
APF-1001 (or whatever the 'Imagination Station' was called)
TRS-80 Color Computer (I have a couple, but haven't bothered hooking it up since I only have a few carts for it)
RDI Halcyon (never even seen one before in person, would probably wet myself if I did)
Atari ST (I have one, but it never worked right)
Action Max (have one, can't muster enough interest to try it out)
View-Master Interactivevision (like the Action Max, i've never bothered playing it)
Amiga 1200 (I don't have a power supply or cables for mine)
Turbo Duo (I have one, but no controller, PSU, or video cables)
Commodore CD32
SNES (I was turned off by Nintendo's NES era business tactics, so I avoided their consoles until the GameCube).
Gameboy, Gameboy Color
Neo-Geo (only played the arcade version)
Memorex VIS (I own one with a load of software, just haven't bothered using it)
Game.com
Xbox 360
I've got a lot of consoles and computers scattered around here. Atari 2600, 5200, 7800, XE, Lynx, Jaguar/Jag CD, Odyssey2, Intellivision, Colecovision, Vectrex, NES, SMS, Telegames DINA (Sega SG-1000 and Colecovision clone), Action Max, View-Master Interactivevision, TurboGrafx-16/CD, TurboDuo, Sega Genesis with Sega CD and 32X, Pioneer LaserActive with Sega module, Philips CD-i, Memorex VIS, Game Gear, Tiger R-Zone, N64, Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast, Neo-Geo Pocket Color, Nuon DVD players (N501 and SD-2300), PS2, GameCube, Xbox, GBA SP (I hate that thing), Nokia N-Gage QD, Gizmondo, and a Xavix GamePort (Bowling rocks!). Like stated before, I haven't played a few of them for one reason or another. I also have some computer consoles, namely the TI-99/4A (my first computer), Timex/Sinclair 1000 with 16K pack, VIC-20 (never had any cables or software for it), Atari Portfolio, Atari 520ST (screen always rolled, never got it to work), several Atari 8-bit consoles, a few TRS-80 CoCo models, a Commodore Amiga 1000 (classic gaming computer!), an Apple IIc(no power supply) and an Amiga 1200 (don't have any cables). I'm sure i'm forgetting some of my stuff. And i'm not even counting things like Pong consoles, Famiclones, and even my Atari Video Music.

I'm sure not many people have played a R Zone.
I'll probably get booted out for this, but I've NEVER played a SNES.
I've owned ( but only played a Virtual Boy) every other common Nintendo system including the NES and more than one GB, GBA and Cube. I haven't touched the SNES *yet* simply because there are so many easily available great games that it will become a money magnet once I start. I'm biding my time.

Among the systems that I think most collectors have heard about: I have no memory of ever playing a Colecovision, Emerson Arcadia 2001, Sega Master System, Sega 32x, 3DO, NEO-GEO or Atari Jaguar.
Handhelds I've never played would be: Microvision, Lynx, Turbo Express, Game Gear, Nintendo DS, game.com and r-zone. I think that covers it.

heh, touché. I don't have a Colecovision myself, and I'd like to get one, but I've learned that it's not easy to get one (that works) these days. Pity, because it had some awesome games on it.
But, the other ones are pretty easy to get. Go forth! :p
