I've never gotten around to play any of the games in the DragonQuest series and wanted to pick up one of the Super Famicom titles. First I'd play it fantranslated and later collect the proper games. The artwork and the series' importance in video gaming is what intrigues me but now I really could hear your opinions on which title (on SFC/SNES) is the best place to start...
Really appreciate your suggestions and comments.

So wait you haven't played any Dragon Warrior games? Well you could play the original with enhanced graphics for the SFC. Or start with 5 if you're just asking us to choose from 5 or 6.

Believe it or not. Never played any DQ. Weird since I'm a big RPG fan. Somehow I had so much respect for the series that I wanted to play them when I was ready. Now I am. :)
So, you prefer 5 over 6? Why?

Better storyline. Only thing 6 really has going for it in my opinion is the graphics.

Thanks for the feedback.
Will check out that DQ1&2 cart too...wish they'd put that out for GBA (in english) like FF1&2...

They make it in english for Gameboy Color, same with DQ3. I don't think the english patch for Dragon Quest 3 (SFC) was ever finished, but the other 3 (I believe) are.

As has been mentioned, DragonQuest 1 & 2 came out for the Super Famicom. There's a translated version of that if you want to start at the beginning. I haven't played them, but I assume they are like the Game Boy Color versions that came out so a lot of the tediousness has been removed and there are some enhancements, but they are pretty early console-style RPGs (level-up, buy better equipment, little story).
There was also a DragonQuest 3 remake for the Super Famicom. DQ3 is where the series started to get good. I'm not sure if it has been translated. It came out in English for the Game Boy Color.
DragonQuest 4 is my favorite, but that was only remade for the Playstation.
Of the two DQ games that originally came out for the Super Famicom (5 & 6), I'm in the minority of liking 6 better than 5. I'll give 5 a better story (or rather, better characterizations - much easier to understand why the characters are working together and why they are doing it), but I found 6 more charming. I prefer the job system, the various quests and side-quests, and the sense of exploration. While the characters you play may not be as well fleshed out as 5, I like the background story of what is going on the world(s) and the quests you need to do to save it. The much improved graphics didn't hurt either.
Hope this helped.

I'm with Daria, totally part 5 (translated to english). You an also get a great walkthrough off gamefaqs (which is what I'm doing). Excellent game with a gret story.
BTW, Daria I restarted my erased DQ5 and I'm in level 24ish. So I bit the bullet and I am making progress (in japanese still ;) ).

If you are going to do DQ 5, go with the Dejap translation. It is far more faithful to the Dragon Warrior games, rather than being a literal translation.
