PS1:
Breath of Fire 3
Suikoden
Suikoden 2
Valkyrie Profile

PS2:
Wizardry (if you like dungeon crawlers)

That's off the top of my head though, if I think of others, I'll post them. :)

I'm gonna suggest Xenosaga strictly for the story.

Suikoden anything is definitely worth it
I've heard Shadow Hearts is great

XboX:
You'll be hard pressed to find a good turn based RPG for this system. Maybe Metal Dunegon, but I heard it wasn't very good. Basically everything worth playing is an action RPG. Fable, Morrowind, Bard's Tale, Sudeki, can't go wrong with those four.

Gamecube:
Skies of Arcadia Legends: If you don't already own the dreamcast version this game's a must. The Cube version includes bonus sidequests and an expanded storyline, but it's not that drastic a change so I wouldn't play it all over again if you have the Dreamcast version already. The only argument I've heard against this port is the music quality compared to the original- of course if you haven't played the original it's not a flaw you'll notice. However whatever version you choose Skies is a classic. Just a fun epic storyline, the sky pirate theme is a change from most traditional RPGs and the ship battles rock.

Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door: Geez, this is like hands down my favorite Gamecube game. Game's freaking hilarious for one thing, more so if you're a mario fan anyway. Paper Mario takes all the characters, settings, and play mechanics from all the other Mario titles and just converts them into an RPG. So the more mario game's you've played the more you can appreciate just all the little touches. But even if you haven't played very many, it's still a good RPG by it's own merit. One thing I like about the Paper Mario games is they really cut the experience system down to the essentials. Why deal with 10s of 1000s of hit points when really about 7 will suffice? I can't really imagine a jumping attack doing all that much damage anyway. The series also exploits the graphical medium. Sprites are 2D because they're suppose to be made of paper, and the whole world is illustrated in a pop-up book form. Really original and clever idea that works. Especially when Mario's folding himself up into a paper airplane or boat to tackle enviorment based puzzels Zelda style.

Tales of Symphonia: I'd like to jump on the bandwagon and reccomend it. I know everyone else will but honestly I haven't had much of a chance to play it. But again I'm sure my vote's hardly needed. :P

Baten Katios: I really like the battle system. Yes it's card based, but it's original and it works. I really hate the voice acting, and I'm not even that picky. Luckly there's an option to turn off voices altogether but I'm still baffled that Namco could make such a huge cock-up when the rest of the game is cosmetically breath taking. Go figure. Haven't played far enough to comment on the storyline.

-will post PSone seperately-

Tales of Symphonia isn't exactly turn-based, though. ;)

Anyway, if you want to try something that's innovative and unusual but still has turn-based battles, I'd recommend Valkyrie Profile for PSX and Baten Kaitos for GameCube.

I simply have to chime in with Freedom Force vs. the Third Reich (and / or the original Freedom Force, if you've never played it).

It's turn-based in that you can pause it and give orders (which you pretty much have to do), but it doesn't have strict turn demarcations. I take a "turn" whenever combat situations change (and they are constantly changing - guy moves out of your line of sight, guy turns on a power that is only vulnerable to a certain attack type, etc.).

It is super-quality awesomeness; the much goods. Loads of campy fun for everyone, and lots of cool powers too.

If you order now from Freedomfans.com, you can still get the bonus disc with the three bonus characters.

Dragon Warrior VII on the PSX if you prefer going old-school... (DW VII is basically like a SNES RPG but on 2 CDs...)

Yep, you guessed it-- I'm (for lack of a better term) pimping shadow hearts again. FANTASTIC game, and Its sequel is even better. Both are in my personal top ten games of all time. If you like your RPG's weird, frightening, hilarious, and touching, then you'll love it! :D

Is Wizardry of PS2 considered rare?

I think it's kinda rare, but you can find it online for around $35.

Only one problem: Crazycarl specified that he wanted a turn-based RPG. As great as Kingdom Hearts is (and I do love that game), it's not turn-based.

And I second Shadow Hearts. Just ignore the crappy voiceovers in the first game.

Also, give Lunar 1/2 for the PSX a try.

And consider Grandia for PSX, one of my favorites.

I've been known to smite people who haven't played Tales of Symphonia, I know it's not turn-based, but you HAVE to play it! I feel you on turn-based preference but this game is SO good.

Grandia & Chrono Cross are my 2 favorite RPG's on the PS1. Grandia is a spectacular game, very epic!

So yes you can second Daria's vote for Tales of Symphonia!

Also I'm all about Thousand Arms, Disgaea, Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door, Y's (PS2), etc etc etc

BTW I'd like to hear if anyone has played Shining Tears yet? That game looks like it is on the top of my list, but I'd like to hear other opinions. THANKS!

Persona! Hahahaha...

What about Persona? o_O The Persona games are really cool. In fact, pretty much everything related to the Megami Tensei series is good.

Although, I wouldn't recommend buying games based on the Atlus name. All of their games are made by different developers since all they are is a US publisher that localizes various Japanese games. While most of the games they publish are good, you really can't get any idea what one Atlus game is like by playing another.

hmm thanks with all the great suggestions....but i have another question for u guys to answer. what would be the best on a cheap budget...lets say around 35 at the most. just bought a guitar.

Aussie2B

Well, I'd guess that Breath of Fire 3, Chrono Cross, and Dragon Warrior 7 are probably the cheapest of all the games that have been recommended (understandable, since they're all for PlayStation, not something more current). Those shouldn't cost more than $20 each.

As much as I recommend it, Valkyrie Profile isn't exactly cheap. :P

thats fine since i like the more cartoony/anime art style then realistic. yet i own most of the FF series...go figure  ...just wanted a diff turn-base style.

I've played through maybe an hour 1/2 of Shining Tears so far and I have to says a 2d rpg never look so good. The action based battle system takes getting used. I really didn't know much about the game and was expecting turn based like the other Shining games from Sega, but its starting to grow on me. One thing I have mixed feelings about are the voiceovers for shop vendors. Who is keeps getting LOTR flashback every time rings are mentioned in the game? Go buy it now!

Suikoden III can be had new for $30, and it's a fantastic game. The first Xenosaga game can also be had for $30, as well as Breath of Fire V. XSaga and Suikoden 3 should each get you at least 40 hours of play, BoF not so much.

You have not lived until you've played Lunar: SSSC on an RGB monitor.

That is all.
