UGH! Shipping damage! It's not something that we like to think about, and to be honest, I've never really thought about it before myself, but now that it's happened to me, I realize that it is a very real and unfortunate possibility. So, this thread is for discussing your worst importing nightmares coming true!

I'll start with my own horror story. I recently ordered a factory sealed copy of the original version of Terra Phantastica. I don't know how scarce it is in that condition, but for me it's been very difficult to locate one. All I've seen for months is factory sealed copies of the Saturn Collection version, with the awful white border around the awesome artwork on the cover, and used copies of the original version. So I was really looking forward to it arriving.

When it finally got here, I noticed that the plain paper envelope that it was packed in had a fairly large hole in it, and I could see the bubble paper that was wrapped around the game through it, but I didn't think much of it. I foolishly assumed that the game inside would still be in the same condition that I saw it in the auction photo when I jumped on the BIN button for it.

So, I eagerly ripped the envelope open using the convenient hole that was already in it, and proceeded to unwrap the one thin layer of bubble wrap from the game. I didn't think anything of the fact that it was only wrapped in one layer of bubble wrap either, except that it did seem very unusual, since normally whenever I receive a new import game it's wrapped in several layers of bubble wrap. I always thought that all that extra bubble wrap was redundant before, but I will never think that again. Nothing can ever be wrapped in too much bubble wrap! The damage was about to be revealed...

The horror was far worse than I could've imagined if I had even suspected that the game was damaged. At the worst, I thought that maybe the CD jewel case could have some small cracks in it that weren't there before, but it didn't matter because I was gonna open up the game and play it anyway. However, the damage was shockingly massive. One corner of the CD jewel case had been crushed so badly that it literally looked as though it had been bitten and chewed off! The factory seal was torn open, every page of the manual was either torn or bent or both, the disc holder was broken, and the insert was torn as well. Nothing escaped the wrath of whatever damaged this unfortunate game except the spine card, and interestingly enough, the disc itself. I can't see any scratches on it at all, on either side of it. The data side appears to be perfect, and the label side appears to be perfect as well.

So, I was spared the sadness of an unplayable game, or one that might as well have been used. But otherwise, of course everything else has to be replaced. So, the first thing that I did was fire off an email to the seller to let him know that I got the game, and to tell him about all the damage to it. Hopefully he'll offer me a partial refund or a discount on my next order or something, but I don't really expect him to. It's not exactly like it's all his fault, although the way he packaged it certainly left alot to be desired, and it surely contributed quite a bit to all the damage. And worse yet, I have more items on the way from this seller. I've never dealt with him before, and he seems to be pretty new to selling on ebay, so I told him that I hope the rest of the items that I've ordered from him are packaged better and they arrive safely. I still haven't paid him for one of them yet, so I'm gonna have to ask him if he can ship that one in a box for me. I don't care if he charges me more for it because of that or not. For what he's charging me for it already, it's worth any additional charges. Not to mention it wouldn't be very easy to find another factory sealed copy of that game, so I want it shipped in a box!

Anyhow, pending a response from the seller about the damaged game, the next thing that I did was search for another copy on ebay. And much to my surprise, fortunately another seller had a factory sealed copy of the original version. It was even a few dollars cheaper than what I had to pay for the one that got damaged. So that was a big relief, although it was another $30 that I wasn't expecting to have to pay, and really I shouldn't have to pay another $30 for another copy of the game, because I already paid $30 for a copy of it! But that's not the other seller's problem, so of course I bought it.

But what if I hadn't been able to find another factory sealed copy of the same version of the game right away? And what if it wasn't very reasonably priced? What if this had happened to a really expensive game? Needless to say, I'm very concerned about shipping damage now, and I may have to start paying extra for insurance on every order. Normally I'll only pay extra for insurance if it's something extremely expensive, or if it's a very large order. But now, even though I know that these sorts of accidents are very rare when an order is packaged properly, I'm paranoid about shipping damage!

I can't say that I haven't been very lucky. I've ordered dozens of import games during the last few months, and this is the first time that something like this has happened to one of my orders. So I know that it's not very likely to happen again anytime soon, but now I'm very painfully aware that it could happen again at any time, to anything that I order. And that's very scary!

So, has anything like this ever happened to you before? How did you handle it? How did the seller handle it? Did it work out alright for you in the end, or did it happen to something that was virtually irreplaceable? Share your horror!

Hehe i know of the tragic feeling you speak of :D

Collecting nintendo games in their super feeble carboard boxes is a nightmare. I have ordered many games via ebay & online shops & luckily i have had very few destroyed games.

I remember when i ordered pokemon gold & silver from a online import store when they had just been released in japan, they sent the games out wrapped only in a piece of courragated card, suffice to say when they got to me they were crushed to hell the boxes were nearly flat. I complained but they never sorted it out.

But when you ask for a game to be shipped in a box & they ignore you & put it in a envelope ii really pisses me off. But its too late by then as you have a mashed game. I dont even try to get them replaced from where i bought the. I usually just sell them on & cut my losses & hope i can buy it again in the future.

Im not sure if this counts as it was my fault but, I bought Choro Q for GBA (the Ltd Edition japanese one with the free tank toy) and the seller had wrapped the envelope so well i needed scissors to cut it open. So i cut through the top only to realise id cut through the tab of the box (it was flat packed) You can barely notice it but, its the fact i was dumb enough to do it in the first place that pisses me off..

I have been really lucky and only had two problems. First was when I bought Radient Silvergun and one other game from Japan. Both cases were smashed, but thank goodness they both survived scratch free! Second was this:

http://combobento.com/photos/CardcaptorSakura.jpg

As you can see it's somewhat crushed on the bottom left. This picture does not show all the damage to the slip cover or the box inside. I was shocked when this came in a envelope only, not even a padded envelope... a regular one! I can live with it now, but at the time it really pissed me off.

I'm gonna have to take some pics of what happened to Terra Phantastica and post them here, you guys won't believe how bad the damage to it is. I'm still freaking out over it, and I still have yet to hear back from the seller. The biggest thing that bothers me about it now is will Black Matrix survive being packed and shipped out the same way, since I know it's already been shipped, and will the seller honor my request to send Skull Fang in a box? I really don't want either one of the other games that I ordered from him to get damaged, but I sure don't want an $80 sealed copy of Skull Fang to get killed! He has another sealed copy of Black Matrix, so if the one he sent gets damaged, I'll just have to try to get him to replace it, but I've only seen one other place with a sealed copy of Skull Fang, and they already sold it. Plus, I shouldn't have to replace any games because the seller packed them poorly!

EDIT: Well thank goodness Black Matrix just arrived safely, but it's a miracle that it survived without suffering the same fate that Terra Phantastica did. It was packaged the exact same way. So I guess I was just unlucky with the first shipment, but I'm still gonna try to get the seller to send Skull Fang in a box. I don't mind paying extra for the favor, whatever it takes to protect it! This seller has alot of great stuff, but man does he ever need to learn how to package his items more securely! I don't think that he realizes how poorly padded they are in just a plain paper envelope with only one layer of bubble wrap around them! I'm surprised he hasn't had a ton of complaints about it. I wonder if he'd pack them better if I had them all sent in one shipment? I would've done that to save money if he had posted everything I wanted at the same time, but he had one thing I wanted, then I paid for it, then he posted another thing I wanted, I paid for it, then he posted another thing I wanted, and I still haven't paid for it yet because I wanna make sure that he doesn't have anything else that I want before I spend any more on shipping.

So I dunno about this guy. He seems to get alot of really hard to find stuff, but if he isn't gonna pack it all well enough to protect it, then what's the point? It's one thing to have to replace a $30 game, but I can't afford to replace any games that are even more expensive than that, and I shouldn't have to! He doesn't seem to be very quick to answer questions or respond to emails either. I wonder if I'll even hear from him at all. So far all he's sent me is invoices and left me feedback, but I've sent him a couple of emails asking questions and no response from him yet. So I'm not even sure what to leave for feedback yet, much less what to do about the rest of my orders from him. I'm really nervous about the fate of my future packages from him! I love his selection, so I don't want to piss him off, but at the same time I don't want to pay a bundle for his stuff and have it not arrive safely either!

Check this out! This is true horror! This WAS a perfectly mint factory sealed game! It looks like Godzilla got ahold of it before it left Japan for my house! :o

OMG, that's horrible! Sorry to see, man, that's brutal.

I have had items shipped with no protection whatsoever (people think bubble mailers are enough, some times it is other times not so)... I always cover my games in bubble wrap.

Although, I recall getting a game in mint condition where it was just a flat envelope, not even a bubble mailer. Whew, lucky...

LOL Yeah, the seller was as shocked as I was when he saw those pics! He's adjusted his packaging policies accordingly now, but I still think he's being a bit stingy with padding and protection. Still no offer of any compensation either, but oh well. I just bought a bunch more stuff from him anyway. He seems to be a good guy, and he's shipping my Skull Fang in a box by EMS. I just paid him for that this morning, but hopefully he hasn't shipped it yet, because now I'm hoping he'll put all the other games that I bought from him today in that box too. I really need to ask him if he'll send me a list of all the sealed Saturn games that he has. Every time I buy one and pay him for it, he posts something else I that want right after I pay him and he ships my order! Anyhow, it looks like his packaging is improving, so hopefully whatever else I order from him will arrive undamaged. That was quite an accident, wasn't it?

when I buy from eBay I usually wait till the seller contacts me with total price and THEN I will look into what kind of shipping method the seller used and ask for the type of packaging he/she uses...

if the seller does not contact me I usually fire one e-mail asking for total and then wait till he/she comes back to me... after all it's me who will pay for the items and I can take all the time in the world if I wanted... :p

if this happened to me I'd demand the compensation from the seller and take an action thru eBay/Paypal and etc.

and I only use Paypal for payment... if the seller does not accept I go else where for shopping... I'm type of customer if doesn't get served within reasonable time i will simply drop everything I was going to buy and simply walk away - and let the shop to sort out/put back the items...

Just curious, does anybody have any interest in this poor misfortunate game? The case is what got messed up the worst, and I do have the missing piece of the insert, so if you want a good cheap deal on it... Maybe $10 shipped? The disc itself is undamaged and brand new, the spine card is perfect, and so is the registration card, so only the manual has any noticeable damage to it, besides the insert and the case. The map is a little scuffed, but not torn. I'd put it in a new case, if I had a spare one, but it's one of those extra thick single jewel cases because of the thickness of the manual. So the manual won't fit in a regular CD jewel case. Anyhow, I paid $30 shipped for it, so it would be nice if I could recover at least part of my loss. I have another brand new copy on the way, so I really don't need this one. Such a tragedy it is... But the game does work perfectly. I did test it, and it's a pretty cool SRPG!

I've got ya beat. Recently had a buddy ship me a copy of Rakugaki Showtime, mint complete. Well, during shipping the package got "lost". He traced it and it was sent back to him. However, someone had opened the box, stolen some of my stuff, and then poured some sort of unidentified liquid in the box to obscure the label. The Rakugai Showtime manual and insert were bonded to the plastic of the case, and the manual was completely decimated. The disc was slathered in the stuff too. In addition, the box for my PC Engine wireless controller that he also sent me....destroyed in the same fashion.

I bought some boxed mint games from Brazil and when I got them they spelled of piss, the boxes were crushed and the carts were smashed into millions of pieces. Luckily I got my money back.

What do you mean by " poured some sort of unidentified liquid in the box to obscure the label"? What label was inside the box?

The label that had my shipping address was under tape. They saturated the entire package with it until the text under the tape was unreadable, to make it look like something inside the package spilled and ruined it. Someone at the postal routing station did it and stole a bunch of stuff, including a 50s comic and a DS system (brand new) out of the package. Pretty brutal really. I didn't get to see the package, but it ended up making the post office lose it cause they couldn't read the address.

Dang, that is brutal! At least I did get a playable disc out of it! And really, if I could just get a new case for it, it would be passable as a used game, just not worth as much as I paid for it. I'm just too picky about my games to keep it.
