I'm kinda hitting a low point in my collecting. I'm not sure what to collect, older titles (such as PSX, NES, SNES and N64) or if I should go the route of new games. Now don't get me wrong, I have sub-collections for each (ex. Final Fantasy for old, .Hack and Resident Evil {GC edition} series for the new) but now i'm not sure what to try and go for. Older stuff or the newer stuff. Someone help, or give some guidance.

Older is cheaper.
......that's the only real big difference.

Well, I would say get the fun, rare, stuff for the newer systems now, while you can. They are as cheap as they might ever be, in many cases.

Who is to say what will be rare a few years from now? I say stick with the old.

Doesn't really make a difference.. everything 'old' now used to 'new', and what is new now will be old as a matter of course. Just buy videogames you want to play. :)

Stick with the old, you can never go wrong with the classics

I'm thinking old myself, but I think i'd love to finish up some of my newer collections also, such as my Resident Evil collection. Missing Zero, 1 and 2 for the GC. I have all the rest, just missing the other buggers in my collection. I guess I'll keep an eye out for them, but focus on my old nintendo collection and PSX RPG collection. The only problem for old is that prices are outrageous out by me here in MI, and I can't seem to find places that are decent, unfortunatly.

It depends on what you like most about collecting. If the thrill of the hunt is what turns you on go for the old. They are harder to find and you will spend may hours in thrift stores and yard sales. If you don't have time for a long hunt go for the new.
I buy both, but I like the hunt most. Buying a new game will never give the thrill I got finding a complet copy of O2 Power Lords in a thrift for 50 cents.

Well, collecting old is more fun, and I would say focus on that if you have the funds, but it really isn't a bad idea to pick up the more obscure titles like Cubivore, etc.. that are coming out while you can.. (Rez, etc..)
I know those two are pretty rare now, but you can kind of tell which games are going to not be all that successful sales-wise, but still really fun. You know, all those off-the-wall Japanese titles that make you ask, "What were they thinking releasing this here?"

For the record, every time you say that the PSX and N64 are old it's like someone is kicking me in the nuts with a pair of cleats on.

For the record, every time you say that the PSX and N64 are old it's like someone is kicking me in the nuts with a pair of cleats on.
I was going to make a point like this, but Flack beat me to it, and he stated it more eloquently than I could have.
Analogies about cleats to the nuts are eloquent, right?
Anyway, I'll echo most of the other posters here and say: collect whatever you want, and use DP as a resource for the rarities. If there's something old you want that's rare, snatch it up quick 'cuz it won't get any more common in the future. By the same logic, grab any new potential rares (if you want them) as soon as they are available or you'll kick yourself later. The folks on this board are pretty good at pointing those out.

so true flack ;)
What I consider "old" as far a video game consoles go would be the atari2600 or maybe even the NES, heck I dont even think of the SuperNes or any other 16-bit systems as "old" since that was only waaaaay back in the early 90's LOL
But then again I guess im gettin "old" too :( oh well :D

I would say go old. I'm finding it (all of a sudden) harder and harder to obtain the older stuff at a decent price (4-5 years ago) and I can imagine it's only going to get harder. Get the stuff while you can and while it's reasonable.
(of course I guess the same thing applies to the newer consoles but in a few years I imagine the prices will still average out to be the same while the older stuff will only increase in value)

I never meant to offend anyone by saying the N64 and PSX as "old" because they aren't at all. I only refer to them as "old" because they aren't the most current of the game systems. I don't mean them as old as in year wise, but for general purpose right now i use the term....loosely to say the least.
Well, thanks everyone for the input. I've made my decision. I'm going old, besides a few games like the Resident Evil series and other great games out there. My goals: complete Resident Evil collection and collect a complete N64 collection.
