Well, it's been a long time coming (about 8 years of buying on/off, but only about 2 seriously trying to get them all), but today I finally completed my European SMS collection when I received a copy of Phantasy Star - I had been holding out for a cheap copy of this, but after I picked up the last rare game I needed a couple of weeks back, I managed to sort out a trade for it on another forum.
I still need a few manuals and want to replace a couple of damaged boxes, but I now own all 280 games that were released here, all 6 US exclusives [that's not counting games that were just renamed like Buster Douglas Boxing/Heavyweight Champ], the Australian 4 Pak All Action and about half of the Brazilian exclusives. Still looking for the remaining TecToy games and the rare Hong Kong release, Mah-Jong.
I think it's customary in these circumstances to post a few pics, so without further ado:

Major props to any DPers who have helped me achieve this - off the top of my head that includes: AtariBuff (MAJOR thanks! ;)), chaoticjelly, Gunstar Hero_UK, -hellvin-, hydr0x, Raccoon Lad, thegreatescape & tones - thanks again guys, I couldn't have done it without you! :)
Next: Project Mega Drive - only about another 300 to go there! LOL
edit: ah crap, just noticed that two of the pictures duplicate a bunch of games. Ah well, they're all back on their shelf now so it'll just have to stay like that!

*Regains consciousness, only to faint again after noticing that Mortal Kombat 3 was actually ported to the Master System*
Congrats anagrama! Have you played them all yet? :)

fan-f#ckin'-tastic. really sweet. euro SMS is probably the best euro set to have since it had so many killer games that never saw NA releases. it's arguably a better set than the NA set for that matter.
congrats!

Ah, that horrible, system-killing boxart.
(By the way, MK3 also had a port to the B&W GB, if you think an SMS port is something.)

the rare Hong Kong release, Mah-Jong
Sorry to side track a bit.
Does anyone have a picture of the Hong Kong Mah-Jong, my aunt picked me up a copy the other day for $1, and I'm not sure if it's just the Japanese one or if it's the Hong Kong one.
Now back on topic: That's one nice looking collection. I love complete Master System games, but rarely ever find complete ones anymore.
If you need another place to host those, maybe I can find somewhere...
Ah, that horrible, system-killing boxart.
What a slow, agonizing death (you're looking at 10 years worth of games)...

Don't quite remember what I helped you out on, but you're welcome. I'm dying to see the pictures but I can't see em =\. Congrats man, I only need the US SMS Sonic and I'm all done. Then I'm moving on to the euro games ;D.

Ah crap, looks like the combined might of DP & SMS.com was too much for villagephotos.com to take... Ah well, the pics should be back up tomorrow. :(
Cheers for the platitudes folks - it feels pretty good to have finally got the lot. Think I might take a wee break now before diving headlong into the Mega Drive ;)
@ o2william - they've all been 'tried' at least, but I've probably only had the chance to give maybe 40%-50% of them any serious playing time. Slowly trying to remedy that - the regular segamastersystem.com Game of the Week means at least one more gets some cartridge-port time each week...
@ 8bitonline - "arguably"? ;)
@ jwl - Japanese (Mark III) games are housed in a different-shaped cartridge (about the size of 2600 carts), so if yours looks like a standard SMS cart, it'll be the HK version. There's scans at SMSpower.org if you want to be sure. Don't suppose you want to sell it, do you? :)
@ CRV - thanks for the offer, that could be handy. I didn't reasilse there was such a low daily limit on villagephotos.com.If you PM me your email address, I can send you copies? Thanks!
@ -hellvin- - yours was King's Quest - one of the 6 US-only releases :)
@ thegreatescape - I'll try to do that when I get a chance - they're not really shelved atm, more stacked in an alcove along with all my Mega Drive games. Does look pretty good though ;) And thanks again for Robocop3!

OK, race ya! LOL I'm missing something like ~320 PAL MD games, but I've been picking up a lot of the rarer ones over the last year or so, so I should be able to fill in loads of the commons with a few bulk purchases. Gonna give my wallet a chance to recover for a month or two first though! :)

Which are the rare ones you picked up?
eh... I've got about two-thirds of all the R6 & R7's in the guide. Rarest ones are probably Death & Return of Superman, Spiderman: Animated Series, Izzy's Quest, Addams Family Values, Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel & the Oz-only Ecco Jr.
Unfortunately I've still got most of the expensive ones to go - I've got SoR3 & Shining Force II, but am missing Alien Soldier, Mega Man, The Punisher & all the Phantasy Stars, to name a few. Two years probably sounds about right for me aswell - there's still plenty of other (non-MD) stuff I'm after aswell :) See you here in 2007!

Welcome to the club :)
I've got a complete set as well.. took me from December 1995 to somewhere around 2003..
Must admit I don't have any of those Kixx rereleases - they're pretty sexy packaging. Certainly better looking than those paper-ripped "Classics" ones.
Have you got any of the Euro-language variations of the Disney games?
Also, do you have both the Virgin and the Imageworks releases of "Xenon 2" and "Speedball"? Also, have you managed to find a Pro Action Replay? They were pretty hard to come by - I ended up getting mine from eBay Germany of all places.
Congratulations - it's a bloody good system, isn't it?
anagrama
04-01-2005, 08:11 AM
I've got all the alternate Virgin/Image Works games (I count those as seperate releases since they're by different publishers and have different part numbers), but only have a multi-language Jungle Book & the English-only Lion King.
I'll probably pick up the others at some point along with other variations (the US Gold alternate covers, alternate Laser Ghost & Monaco GP2, the language variant World Cup USA '94 & Olympic Gold, the German releases, Portugese reissues etc etc etc ;)) but at the moment I'm only really after the Kixx & Classics variations.
No Action Replay yet either - mind, I've seen at least 3 variations of that aswell!
Yeah, it's a heck of a system - even today, I'm continually surprised by games I go back to having written them off after a brief go, only to find that they really are class after all :)
Steempy
04-01-2005, 08:13 AM
"all" the alternate Virgin ones?
Is there more than just Speedball and Xenon 2 that were released twice?
anagrama
04-01-2005, 08:16 AM
Nah, just those 2 (well, it's "all" 4 if you count both versions of both games) ;)
Steempy
04-01-2005, 09:07 AM
If you want me to do your head in, I could mention the two
different versions of that wanky pirate game - umm, Captain something..
where you collect the letters to spell his name.. Data East arcade game.
(edit: Captain Silver!)
Or the Sega Club version of Power Strike with the white and blue sleeve,
or the Light Phaser version of Assault City, or... :)
anagrama
04-01-2005, 09:23 AM
Yeah, I know :) I've got both the Assault City's but that's about it.
Of course, if we're getting really nit-picking, there's all the games that were issued both with & without the "Now there are no limits" text on the back cover, or a few with either 5 or 8 languages on the back, or the version of Tennis Ace that has a different screenshot on the back, or the copies of Wanted & Cloud Master that have their box descriptions mistakenly swapped etc etc etc....
A line must be drawn somewhere! ;) And I'm drawing it at the Kixx & Classics covers. I'll probably pick up any others I come across, but won;t be actively searching them out, at least for now. Not when there's much more interesting stuff like Brazilian, Japanese & Korean games out there, anyway...

Damn yo. Thats a phat collection. You are blinging. Just kidding man!
Congrats on that amazing collection
Steempy
04-01-2005, 09:40 AM
The Captain Shitegame isn't really nitpicking - the other version actually has a larger capacity cart and an extra level or two.
Of course, it's still a crap game, but it's a more worthy variation than most :)

There's a fair few that were re-titled (eg. Reggie Jackson Baseball/American Baseball or Rambo First Blood Part 2/Secret Command ), but the 6 *unique* US games that weren't released in Europe are:
Sports Pad Football & Great Ice Hockey [since the Sports Pad wasn't released here], the Parker Bros. games [Carmen SanDiego(*), King's Quest & Montezuma's Revenge] and Alf [probably because it's so awful LOL].
There's also the butchered Captain Silver which Steempy mentioned - the Euro version is a 2 Meg cart with a couple of extra levels, as opposed to the 1 meg US version.
(*) Actually, Carmen was available here, but it was just US copies that had been imported. Possibly the same story for the other 2 Parker Bros. games, but they show up here much less often

There are soooo much SMS titles that I want!! I already started to hunt the Euro SMS games. Got last week Streets of Rage 2, Astro Warrior & Pit Pot, Secret Command, Alien III. Also got Bank Panic as a freebie from an SMS.com forums user. For US I only need Buster Douglas Kayo Boxing.

Thanks for the link. That's awesome, it turns out it is the Hong Kong version, and it was cart and box only so if anyone has the instructions ;) (sorry it's not for sale). My aunt picked up 24 Master System games when she got it all for $1 each and all with box, most complete. And ever since she got them for me it has really made me want to collect for SMS.

Damn thats nice and one of the nicest PAL collections for us US collectors to get. Even if quite a few of the PAL only games are crappy Genny ports thats something to be proud of. I can only dream of a complete set like that due to the high shipping to the states.

And boxed too.
Expect a PM from me w/ some questions on your collection.
I'm working on a measly US set, but picking up anything else that crosses my path (Euro mostly). Around 117 distinct games right now. Though the really only bragworthy one is a complete HK Mak Jong...

SoR3 is expensive rather than genuinely rare - usually runs around £35-£50 complete on eBay (though I found mine for £2.50 locally ;) ).
The Punisher is a tough one to find, and also pulls in good money (£25-£35). Nice finds! :)

fantastic job James, just amazing, oh man, i can't wait for my first complete set to come (most likely PAL Dreamcast as you know)
i'm glad i could help you out with some stuff, now, just pass along that Mega Drive list of what you need, not that i have anything up for trade right now (other than Fun n Games which you already got from me, right?)... oh wait, i DO have some games, but all quite common and cheap in the UK, stuff like Hurricanes and Mutant League Football... well, i'd keep my eyes open for anything you need, Mega Drive games are among the games that pop up most often in my region so chances ain't that bad to find anything :)
