TWO big things recently happened to me.
1.)My PS2, f*ck*d up on me, and for no reason, just started not reading the discs!!! I called sony, and they told me to send it in, and it might take a month to fix!! It sucks major ass.
2.)I was telling my dad about all of the cool gamecube stuff i got with animal crossing, and he wanted to see it. Here's how i hooked it up on my TV downstairs:
plugged in the system and turned it on
then added the audio cable to the port, and then the video. the video messed it up, and my TV shorted out. My dad was soooo freakin pissed off at me. Was this my accidental problem again, or was the TV just a crap tv? the tv wasnt even a year old! So now i cant play my GC at my dads, because he thinks it will short out all of the TVs.
(I always follow this procedure with all of my systems, but this is the first time i tried it with a GCN.)

You turned it on before you even hooked up the other cable! Jeez.....That is pretty strange. I mean, whatever works for you, but why not just plug all of the cords in, and then turn the GC on!!!

a lot fo new TV's are junk, I mean JUNK.. they are engineered to fail by 2005 and use questionable electronic components for even 2 years of use.. You are better off buying a 3 year old TV at a pawn.. it will last you longer then anything produced sense 2001.
even if you stuck an audio on the video and a video on the audio it wouldn't kill a normal TV. Even with the device turned on. Just take the TV back.

Technically, it SHOULDN'T damage a TV, but for safety's sake leave the GCN (or any device) turned OFF until you have everything hooked up. So the TV won't work at all now, eh? If it hasn't been done, unplug the TV and wait a while then plug it back in and turn it on (make sure all cables are disconnected first) to make sure it works, then turn it off and hook each item back up, turning the TV on and testing each connection.
As for taking the TV back, most TVs come with a 90 labor warranty (possibly 1 year), a 1 year parts warranty, and a 3 year picture tube warranty. Chances are the place you bought it from won't take it back but will send it in for repairs (unless you bought one of those special in-store warranties, so their mileage and service may vary). Good luck.

Static kills!
I've seen alot of things when i was working for a ups company. but static is the worst killer. Your boob tube would have just shorted out and have reset itself maybe after plugging it in. Personally I only buy Sony now, except for the Tivo, I've never had a problem with them and the repair centers just down the road....where refurb ps2 are always 10-20% under retail. and they sometimes have crazy games and that that never sell anywhere or something.

Beware Sony's "you have to send it to us" BS. I have a tape deck I bought from them, a $450 model when I bought it. About a year later, things started happening that shouldn't have been (and I treated this thing like a newborn baby.) Well, a call to Sony told me I'd have to send them $99 just to look at the damn thing which, the operator told me, would be applied towards the cost of any repairs, etc. Well, I asked her, what if this turns out to be a problem with the deck and not anything I've done? What it the repair costs $1? Etc. I was informed that it would still cost me $99 and that that would go towards the repair cost and anything above that, I'd have to cover. Anything less than that was Sony's.
I really couldn't believe it. I mean, this was like 3 months past the one year warranty, and they were going to stick it to me as hard as they could. And this wasn't a cheap piece of gear. It was one of those things that could have led to me buying more of their stereo equipment.
As it sands, the only Sony thing I will buy is Playstation. Even then, it's very begrudgingly. Perhaps at one point in time Sony put out quality, but that must have been some time ago.

Sorry you had problems with Sony products, but I've had nothing but good things using there products. The only item of there's that failed me was a first generation cd boom box that didn't die until years of my smoking killed it ten years later, and I probably could have cleaned it and got it to work if I didn't already replace it with cd-roms and disc changers.
I have several Sony Trinitron studio monitors that stay on 24/7 and have been so sense 1988 and still have a clean clear picture. I've had Sony VCR's that worked great and still works great! Did you go putting Rental tapes into your Sony and expect it to work forever? Because a wrencle in the tape from someone ripping it out of their machine then winding it back in can break the heads on your VCR in a split second! Little soda dried on the tape will also ruin a VCR.. These are precicion machines.
regardless I have yet to have a Sony product die on me from equipment failure, it was always from user abuse.

I have to agree with you Raedon, my wife's Sony all-in-one rack system (receiver, amp, dual dub tape deck, 5 disc CD changer, Dolby surround w/speakers and 30 Watt powered sub) has been alive and kicking since 1994. I used to have a 40" front mirror Sony Projection screen that kept getting better everytime you moved it from place to place (though you still had to make sure the room was darker than deep space to see the screen, like all such screens of its era).
For any repair work, I usually try and take it to an authorized repair center (like Sears or something). They usually charge less.

i am convince they build their walkmans to fail so you'll buy a new one. if you cant treat it a bit rough and jam it in your pocket and drop it once in a while then its not a good portable product...at $60 or less they know you wont bother repairing it so they win.

I have had about 10 walkmans in my life, every brand i can imagine, the only ones that still work are my sonys, one i never use anymore because it is huge, from the 80's. the one other one i had again i just lost it awhile ago. Same goes for porty Cd players, we got my brother a couple of others before, he always breaks them, the sony we bought him last x-mas still works, yet it has more scratches and dents than anything should.
My Tivo did bite it, it was stuck in a loop somehow and would not reset itself, this was after the 90 days, All i said was hey it's hooked up to my sony tv, sony amp, sony dvd player, sonyvcr. the lady laughed, thanked me for being a loyal customer, paid to have new unit fedexed to me, and picked up my old one the next day. All is good.
