I just got this game, and I have a question about it. Why does it come in a double CD case with only one CD in it? Was I supposed to get another disc? And if not, then why didn't they just put it in one of those extra thick single disc jewel cases, like all the other games that come with more manuals than a regular jewel case can hold? As far as I can tell, it's the two manuals that it comes with that would make a regular jewel case insufficient, but putting it in a double CD case seems like a colossal waste of space and plastic, when all it really needs is an extra thick single disc jewel case! That would hold both of the manuals just fine, and it should've cost them alot less for packaging! Not to mention, it makes it look like I'm missing something I should've had!

Most of the Arcade Gears games came that way. Did it come with the Gamest Gears mook?

Yeah, it came with a manual and the Gamest Gears book, which looks like it's some sort of mini strategy guide for the game or something? Looks real cool.

BTW, I'm still looking for a factory sealed copy of the original version of Metal Black (not the Saturn Collection version) too. If anybody has one for sale, or knows where I can get one, please let me know! So far I've only been able to find a sealed copy of the Saturn Collection version, and I want the original!

That's just the way they did it with this game and the other two, Wonder 3 and PuLiRuLa.

As for GF the game itself, it's hard, it's hardcore and it's definitely for the most diehard of shooter fans. Not much flash here, folks. Just old school to be found (look no further than those restart points)

OMG!!! This game ROCKS HARDCORE!!! Old School for sure, but HOLY SHIT!!!

I could tell from all the screenshots and the review of it at DAM that I had to have this game, but WHOA, I was still totally unprepared for it's greatness!!!

INTENSE like you wouldn't believe!!! It starts out like it's gonna bore you to death, but does it ever crank up like mad as you go!!! I ran out of continues somewhere about halfway through it I think, maybe 3/4 of the way, but boy have I ever seen the way, the truth, and the light!!! I'm FREAKIN' BIGTIME!!!

What else can I say about it? This game is RIGHTEOUS!!! Truly a RELIGIOUS experience for any diehard shmupper, even if it is ancient history now. BTW, this is the game that inspired Battle Garegga, for those who don't know it. I'll try to find a link to the story about it again, so you can read it for yourself, but Battle Garegga was created as a tribute to this game. So that should tell you how AWESOME this game is!!! Absolutely GODLY, no doubt about it!!!

:hail: I bow to its MAJESTY!!! :hail:

:D TOTALLY worth what I paid for it too!!! ($120 + shipping NEW) :D

I am correct in assuming that this game is based on the Leiji Matsumoto anime of the same name?

Yep, it's inspired by the anime anyway. I dunno if it actually follows any of the storylines or not, but it's based on the same series. As for the sequel, Metal Black, I believe the only connection tying the two games together is that the enemies are supposed to be the same alien conquerors known as Wild Lizard. But Metal Black takes place on another planet at another time, so that explains why the two games both seem so different and unrelated.

Well, likely it's related in a similar fashion to all these other shows that Gun Fronteir relates to: http://anidb.info/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=rel&aid=1209

Crazy. 999, Harlock, half of this guy's careeer fits together storywise somehow. Defintely gonna have to check the game out though, thanks.

WHOA! Interesting! But what the heck do they mean by "other"? It's not a gaiden, a prequel, a sequel, or a parent story, it's just "other"? What the heck else could it be? Well, the guy was watching old reruns of Gunsmoke, and he thought to himself "This would be a great game!" but then he had to figure out how to tie it into the rest of his life stories, and by the time he got it all Feng Shui'ed, it was obvious that it was "other". He later went on to do the same thing with Metal Black, a sequel with no obvious ties to its prequel other than the fact that he says it's a sequel, and he decided that the enemies are from the same clan of space pirates even though they don't look anymore like the enemies in the prequel anymore than anything else in the sequel looks like anything else in the prequel. Are we confused yet? All we know is the first game is totally badass, and the sequel is really cool too.

Seriously though, I wish that I could read Japanese. Then I could just read the manuals and find out what the tie-in is supposed to be. From what I understand though, Metal Black was supposedly planned to be Darius 3, but for whatever reason, they decided to make it another game instead, and it became Gun Frontier 2. So it has alot of aquatic themed enemies like Darius in it, and no sign at all of any enemies with an old west gun theme in it. Oh yeah, that makes alot of sense! I dunno why they didn't just call it "We really wanted this game to do well, so we made a sequel to Darius and called it a sequel to Gun Frontier". That pretty much sums it up from what I've heard, except that it also looks like a blatant R-Type clone, just for good measure. I think that it strongly resembles Bio Metal in alot of ways too, and considering the name, it probably would've made alot more sense as a Bio Metal sequel!
