View Full Version : Has DP ever considered creating a Digital Press Auction area

I'm sure this has been brought up before, but I've never seen anything about it. I'm guessing that the cost and maintenance of setting something like that up would be tremendous, and probably not worth the effort, but it's still an interesting dream none the less.
Just imagine, DP having their own private auction area, where DP members can auction things up, just like on Ebay, but without all the Ebay crap that comes along with it.
Although I'm sure that lots of people would still prefer to sell their wares on Ebay for the wider potential buying audience, but at least with a auction only for DP members, you would get a knowledgeable audience, and if you had a rare game, that is truly quite rare, but not very well known, you most likely wouldn't find yourself in a situation with only 1 bid at a way below "real rarity market value price".

You mean...the Buying & Selling forum?
No, I mean a "real" auction section, where you actually have to put things up for auction, for a specified time, people actually bid on it, etc, etc. Sure, you can kinda do a similar type thing in the Buying & Selling forums, but it's not the same.
I came to this site for a very long time, before I ever checked out the Buying & Selling forum. But if at the top of this page, in between "Rarity Guide" and "DP Mailing List" it had "Digital Press Auctions', I would have checked that out the first day, and I would probably check it first thing every time I would come to the DP site.
I mean, don't get it wrong, the Buying and Selling forum is a tremendous tool for members to use, but it's not really like a true auction site.
Basically, I'm talking about a clone of Ebay, but just for DP members only. I mean, I know that most people are going to say, just go to Ebay, but with Ebay, you have to deal with all this extra crap. Like sifting through thousands of auctions like, 94 Genesis Games $85 starting price. And all of them have 80 percent sports games and tons of Sonics and Sonic 2's, etc, etc.
At a DP based Auction section, you wouldn't have to sift through crap like that, because nobody would waste their time trying to work people over.

I believe that would be too much aggrevation and too little reward. I think that there would be too much complaining about meaningless issues. Ex this item has a scuff, you said it was mint. boards woud start filling up with 2 much negative issues.

Well for starters, something lke that would have to be written (or at the very least, customized and adapted) to fit DP's needs. That would take a lot of work and time. And then, I don't think many people would use it. People already complain that Digital Press is a buyer's market and not a seller's market, meaning that it's hard to get top dollar for things here because people always want good deals. Of course that's going to carry over into the auctions as well. People aren't going to want to list their items here if they can get more on eBay for them. Selling to someone here isn't any safer than eBay or anywhere else (there are plenty of bad sellers listed in the B&S forum).
I think an auction area would add so many unbelievable headaches. What happens if the forums go down for some reason? Or if someone gets banned? Or if someone lists an items both here and on eBay? My guess is eBay has a very large staff on hand to deal with both user complaints and technical issues.
The biggest drawback is of course numbers. Why would people want to sell here when they can list their item on eBay and get potentially millions of viewers? If they want to cater to DP people, they can post the link in the B&S forum.
(Just to make one thing clear -- these are my opinions and not necessarily the opinion of DP, Joe, or the site in general).

This brings up a semi-related topic I've actually wanted to mention for a while now (hopefully, it hasn't already been discussed and I've missed it).
I'm not a huge fan of the feedback forum. I very rarely post to it (sorry lots of wonderful people I've dealt with) and never bother to read it. I'm not entirely sure why, but I don't. How does this tie-in with the discussion? Well, speaking of auctions, I *am* a big fan of the feedback "rating", a la EBay. Click on the little number next to a seller's (or buyer's) name and get instant access to their dealing history. Even at a quick glance, you know approximately how many deals they've been involved in and if any have been negative experiences for someone else.
Then, the folks over at the neo-geo.com forums introduced it as a method of feedback. Head on over to http://www.neo-geo.com/forums, check out any thread, and see for yourself. I think it works *very* well. I also think that, if it can be included here, it will be much more useful than the feedback forum as it is.

Unless it's someone I already know, I always check out the feedback forum before making a deal in B + S. I find it very useful and much better than the old "good traders" thread.

i doubt alot of people would use it on here, seeing how stupid people can be on classic items on ebay...
An auction thing would be awesome though

Anthony: That sounds like a great idea. We wouldnt need to pay ebay fees, AND we could have a better feedback system!

I try to use the forums to sell but the bottom line is that collectors in general are cheap ass bastards(including myself). When you have thousands of games(which many on this site have, what is that value of some more games?) It does depend on what specific rare items you are selling, but if it is not very rare, then a video game related stuff on this site is not desired or paid for in high dollar amounts. Even ebay as of late has been saturated with common game stuff making it very difficult to sell my extras to fund my hobby. Bottom line: Use the forum to trade items for others, or sell your items for forum members....not for money unless you have something rare. You wont get top dollar here.

I have posted about the site like 4 times, but apparently nobody either believes it's true, or is too lazy to try it.

Those are the only two reasons people aren't using your site? Here's another one. eBay has been around for 10 years now and has over 100 MILLION USERS.

I'd rather have DP take over Ebay and make it a place where the rest of the world can sell to us, but only we can buy stuff there, that would help alot! Otherwise, I agree with the rest here, the average DPer is far too much of a CHEAP BASTARD to make it worth any seller's time to auction stuff on here.
But you wanna know what's really weird about DP? None of the people who are cheap bastards here are cheap bastards on Ebay too! I don't understand that. They won't pay anywhere near what stuff is worth on here, but they'll pay top dollar for stuff on ebay, and then come back here and brag about it.

Yeah I can't see it doing well here. I sell stuff here occassionally... usually when I would feel bad making a profit on it, or I just feel like giving a bunch of stuff away for slightly more than the cost to ship it. Neither of those require an auction, so why bother?
I thought it would be a great idea, but after reading arguments from Flack, swlovinist, and Iron Draggon, I see their point. I don't think it would ever work, but I would love to help and give it a try.
One of my biggest problems with using the Buying & Selling forum for me is, by the time I read who wants to sell what, someone else has already snatched it up. If we did set something like this up, instead of having a bid for $0.01 like ebay, go ahead and put what you want for it, leave if for say five days. Someone wants it, that's fine, but someone else wants it too and is willing to give $2 more for it, even better.
I'm also tyred of doing searches on ebay and finding 450 results on ebooks and get rich quick scams. That and I"m sick of "power" sellers who have 3000 items up for bid so they can't even formaly describe the item in question.
Well, that's my 2 cents worth.

This is not an auction site. This is a video game collectors site with a forum for buying/selling added to it. This site needs to stay that way for everyone to enjoy. Adding an auction area would just add drama and take away from the hobby more than add to it. Ebay is all anyone needs to auction stuff. As far as I know all the MODS here make less than minimum wage from DP Industries so asking them to moderate an auction area is just asking for trouble LOL

Normally Ebay is going to be the better place to sell stuff. You have a much larger potential audience of buyers.
But the reason I would like a DP Auction area, is because a game like War 3010: The Revolution for SNES isn't going to get diddly squat on Ebay, but here somebody is going to know that it's a R6 with a value of $20. You might not get $20 for it, but you will probably get $10. On Ebay you won't even get a bid.
So basically, the stuff that would do well on a DP Auction is stuff that is rare and has some value, but the General Population isn't aware of it. Is the general population aware of the fact that Aero Fighters for SNES is a R8 and valued at $25? No. So if you sell that game on Ebay, you probably won't get much of anything for it. Unless a DP member is on there and sees it. Yet if you have that on a DP Auction, people are going to know it's a R8, and somebody is going to want to snatch it up.
That was the main reason that I think DP Auctions would be cool.
The other reason, is that you wouldn't have any of this, "I don't have a power cable so I can't tell if this system is working, but it probably is, but I'm selling it as-is crap".

The #1 problem with making a DP-only auction site is that nobody would be able to outbid Mayhem.
Nobody.

Just do an auction in the B&S forum. I've done it before. Set a start and end time, establish an opening bid, and away you go.
