Choaniki for Sega Saturn..... WTF?!?!?

Choaniki for the Sega Saturn can be summed up in five words.....



ONE VISUALLY STRANGE F**KING GAME.



Personally, I think that the Choaniki series might be more for the female SHMUP fans who want lots of male eye candy to look at. Sure, there are lots of homoerotic elements which would suggest that the game is geared to a homosexual male audience, but I showed this game to a female friend of mine and she couldn't get enough of seeing 'Adon' & 'Samson' as well as the flexing muscle pumpitudes of all the other masculine characters.

She said that the main bodybuilder (who apparently poses as not only Adon & Samson, but also as any other muscle-heavy characters) was a 'beefcake stud maestro'. LOL

The shooter was pretty difficult, at least the first few times I played it, since I was having a little bit of trouble adjusting to how the ''option" shooters (Adon/Samson or the 2 Angel Babies) are adjusted and how they can be powered up or depleted.

Overall, I think it's a decent shooter which is definitely aiming for the shock value of having lots and lots of male epidermis showing. If you were to trade the weird storyline and characters with flying ships and vehicles, you'd have a pretty basic, straightforward shooter that can hold it's own. It certainly can't be compared to the likes of Radiant Silvergun, Hyper Duel, the "Raiden" series or any games by PsiKyo, but it can definitely fall in line with games like "Parodius", "Twin Bee" and "Keio Flying Squadron", at least in terms of humorous visuals.

As for adding it to my Saturn Collection, now I can truly say that I have played one of the visually strangest SHMUP games ever. LOL

-hellvin-, you have to play Choaniki to understand how wierd/queer this game is, I know there're a lot of wierd Japanese shooters, but nothing compares to Choaniki, I don't even want to go in details on the weapons, the only other shooter that can compare is Toilet Kid for PC Engine, whoever came up with this game is one sick puppy, BTW, what's the term for people who loves human excrement? What the hell? Your female friends finds the characters ATTRACTIVE? O_O That's a new one for me. I've never heard anyone find the game sexy before.

Anyway, you're all reading too much into it. It's not supposed to be for a homosexual audience, nor is it specifically for women. The Choaniki series is just supposed to be funny, plain and simple, not unlike Parodius and such. I'm a female fan of the series, but I don't find any of it attractive at all. o_O I just find it hilarious. Nearly every single person I've come across that's a fan of Choaniki is a straight man, who likes shmups a lot and fruity Japanese imports. Plus the series has really great music.

it was out on PC Engine as well as I believe on PS1 in Japan...

The series originated on PC Engine (with Choaniki and Ai aka Love Choaniki). The PlayStation and Saturn games are pretty much the same, and a new one came out a couple years ago for PS2. :) There is also a Dragonball-style fighter on Super Famicom, and an RPG-ish one on Wonderswan (which I'm dying to try, hehe).

Nope, nothing for Mega Drive. That's every game in the series that I posted above.

By the way, the Super Famicom fighter isn't that great. :P I mean, it's fun for awhile, but it's pretty mediocre as far a fighter goes. There are only about 5 different stage backgrounds, if I'm remembering correctly, so they just keep repeating, and when you beat the game (after beating all the characters; there is no boss or story), all you get is a picture of the character you used. >_< It's also got kind of a plodding pace to it, and the controls are a bit cumbersome. Pretty much every battle consists of flying all over to avoid getting attacked, powering up the beam, getting tired now and then, and finally catching the enemy with the beam. There are other attacks, of course, but the beam is so much better than anything else. Probably my favorite thing about the game, besides just the fact that it's a Choaniki game, is that it comes with a mini CD with 4 music tracks on it. :)

You forgot the SNES game...it's a fighting game, though.

I have a sealed and an open complete ChoAniki for the TurboGrafX CD Rom.

I got the PS2 game recently, but haven't played it yet.

I was telling 2 friends about this series two days ago...you really have to play it to believe it...telling about it does the series no justice.

And while some of it is meant to be funny, as stated above, I disagree that none of it is serious. That game is seriously messed up, and GAY. Fun games, though!

I... REALLY do not know why I'm starting to become more curious about this series. Probably has something to do with this awesome article which, while not wholly complete, covers almost all Cho Aniki games made.

The explanation is that the games aren't so much gay as they are fubar beyond all belief. The very first game in the series makes this believable, as the emphasis on "The Gay" isn't as prominent as it is in later titles. It wasn't until the sequel, Ai Cho Aniki, that things became perverse, and even then, it's not like there's any dubiously phallic enemies or stages taking place inside giant alien vaginas (R-Type Final, I'm looking in your direction here!). It's... weird, sure, and most overseas audiences aren't keen to the ridiculousness of CA, so it just comes off as gay to most people.

And I do have to admit... the music is damn good. :embarrassed:

It is a first for me to hear about anyone finding the game erotic....at least a hetero person, male or female. Most think that Adon and Samson are BUTT ugly.

I've played a Cho Aniki game on PS1, and aside from the odd visuals.. the game is actually pretty challenging.
