Recently I had the fortune of comming across several Game & Watch games at a flee market, the money and their conditions were right so I picked them up. Beyond my simple desire to not pass up a good deal I remember having Mario cement factory as a kid and much enjoying it. Now that I have had the chance to play the games and finding that I do indeed like one (donkey kong jr.) I find myself pondering whether I should seriously start collecting the wee systems. But are these games really worth collecting though in the first place, with such a high number of attrocious games? And can they really be considered games in the first place (would for instance Mario Cement Factory need to be included in a complete list of mario game appearances?)? Surely there must be other G&W owners here, would any of you say you actually play and enjoy the things and do any of you seriously collect them?

I collect them, I've got about 20 in total, half of those in their original packages. They're actually pretty cool to play but I don't invest a lot of time either playing or collecting them - I pick them up when the price is right and I play once in a blue moon when I read a thread like this :)

Collecting G&W these days is a fairly expensive proposition, by the way!

I've also sold them, and spent the money on pocket calculators, which I do collect.

they're a funny niche for my collection, while i'm a big handheld collector i draw the line at LCD games, the exception being G&Ws. how can a true collector pass up a piece of nintendo history if the price is right? i'll admit that i like them as much for their cosmetics as their gameplay, maybe more. they just look and feel cool, especially the multi-screen ones with their heavy feel and brushed metal faceplates. the micro VS ones are also great with their mini wired controllers, its japanese design nirvana. i've got about a dozen of em, including tabletops and panorama, i picked all mine up thru flea market fines and i'm content to let them come in that way, the online auction scene is outta my price range.

I'm the same way....I have a bunch of them, but I don't go out of my way to get them. And he's definitely right about the expensive part :eek 2:

I've been wanting to pick up a Zelda G/W for the longest time now. I don't collect game and watches, but I do have a subcollection of Zelda titles. The game and watch and Zelda's Adventure CDI are really the only games I'm missing.

I have a bunch.. maybe 20 or so. They're kind of beaten up as all were bought back in the day. This brings up an interesting thing though and a question that's been bugging me.

I would definitely like to add some more G&W's that I've always wanted to my collection, but WHY IN THE HECK ARE THEY SO PRICEY? :? They are common throughout the world.. albeit most of them have died or are in non-mint condition. But the fact still stands: They really were everywhere. Whether you were in some roadside stereo store in Bali, or in the flea market at Saipan, or the local arabic electronics store.. some guy sold Game and Watches. It was like bubble gum cards.. every kid at school had one. They were like seiko watches. Everywhere.

Now granted if it's rare (as some of them are) then I can understand. But look at Ebay any day of the week throughout the years. Ever notice there is always a couple of Donkey Kongs or Donkey Kong Jrs out there any day of the week? Why do they always seem to go for 50 bucks and up LOOSE?? :hmm: It just nuts as these things weren't even that much new.. Guess that's the market for ya :(

I only have 2 (Donkey Kong Jr. and Donkey Kong II) that I got from my friends SlyDC and NewColeco. They're cool and all, and if I find some more in good shape and not too pricey, I'd buy them, but I don't go out of my way to look for G&W games.

I would love love love to collect G&W (particulary Nintendo branded), but again it's the damn price of the things. There were quite a few nifty anime-branded non-Nintendo G&W developed over in Japan, and make a nice addition to anime-specific collections.

I would like to have one or two. Zelda comes to mind. More of a curio than anything else for me.

Are the G&Ws different at all between regions (e.g. serial number, language) if I were to find them from a foreign seller would they be the same?

Other than when they were being sold brand new at Kohls (only place in town that had 'em) thirteen or so years ago I have never, ever come across them in the wild. I'm guessing that's one of the reasons it may be so expensive (though YMMV).

On a collection standpoint I'd only get one: Super Mario Bros. I used to own it and while the game wasn't that grand it was a neat conversation piece and it was one helluva alarm clock. It woke me up every time with the "hurry up, time's almost gone" theme. Then some a-hole stole it. Right from under my nose. I still have the box though.
