That price is unprecedented and ridiculous.
This sort of thing happens once in a while.
Most people who buy up these uber-rare neo carts just do it because they enjoy owning something valuable and rare. They also don't tend to hold onto them very long (like this seller, obviously).
It is certainly a very rare game, but Gamedude routinely sold multiple copies of this game in the late 90s for $150 a pop. Puts things in perspective.

Simple: Supply = Low. Demand = High.

Wow. That is freaking disturbing! @_@
You can have an entire Genesis collection for the price of that one game.

Now I'm tempted to sell mine so I can get a house. No really, it'd take a lot for me to sell mine even at this price.
7 years ago this is unimaginable, I got this game for $200, even just 2 years after that, the market changed drasticly, had I started collecting Neo-Geo just couple years later, I'd not have the collection I have today.

Gotta love the Neo-Geo. :D
Im happy enough to find a copy of US Metal Slug 2 NGH. I didnt think I was ever gonna find one...but I did. It took me long enough...but yah. Now Neo Turfmasters I dont have...nor will I ever afford it of course. I could maybe...if I wanted it. Plus that guy has the worst pictures ever...and he should've never taken the insert out. Espically since its a collectors game now. Ohh well...guess he was not a Neo hardcore fan.
I dont think the auction is over yet...with that price. It may go for more. Hehe!

It isn't just a case of supply and demand here - there are plenty of games that are in equally low supply and have equally high demand, but don't command that price.
A major factor here is the sort of people that collect Neo Geo. A lot of them will be people who had Neo Geos when they were younger. At the time, NG was the most expensive system around. You could only really afford one and the games if you were pretty minted.
So now, 10 years later, these rich kids are now rich adults with swanky education and high paying jobs. And now they want ALL the games for their precious Neo Geo .. and they've got oodles more money to throw at it than your average Joe Public who had a Nintendo as a kid.

For real. All that dough just for some golf game? Shit. I mean, why would you even bother paying that much? Has anyone ever even completed a AES collection in any region? Just thinking of the money you'd have to spend on Metal Slug, Blazing Star and Neo Turf Masters alone boggles the mind.

FYI, there're a few guy who do. I was in Taiwan one guy has complete Japanese AES collection, most are even new and sealed. In Europe couples guys have it too (one has all Japanese plus all the conversions), here we know Shawn has everything, yes, both US and Japanese. Plus 4-5 other guys I should not mention to protect their privacies.
Nothing is the same as having, holding those games, look at the artwork SNK put in for those games alone, you'll drool. Besides being rare, Neo Turfmasters is also one of the most addicting games, along with Metal Slug 3, Magical Drop 2/3 (Those games are also going up in value).
I have every official AES game in mixed version, most games I prefer Japanese but some games I had to settle for English version because it was either 1: cheaper to get 2: impossible to find a replacement Japanese version in equally new, prestine condition as I started collecting before going online, many were bought new from mail order stores like Japan Video Games, NCS, Game Stuff, those are US versions.
Thank god I collect those long ago, nowadays not only are prices insane, it's almost impossible to find most in new condition, worsened by the scruitinies of ensuring their authenticities, as the market is a magnet for scammers.
Certain games with confirmed authenticities and prestine condition will fetch ridiculous amounts RIGHT NOW regardless of which version, many of the games have not appeared on the market for sale for a LONG TIME, if they do, expect a bloody bidding war.

"The seller ended this listing early because the item is no longer available for sale" either they got a better off eBay offer or they went to a private deal with the high bidder to avold eBay fees.
