I'm looking to pick up a good off road racing game for Xbox or PS2. Can anyone recommend a good one that features upgradeable parts and vehicles?
Thanks

On the PS2, there's 4x4 Evolution and Test Drive Off Road: Wide Open, neither of which I've played (but being a racing game nut, I want to check them out). 4x4 Evo has upgradeable parts but I'm not sure about Test Drive Off Road. Both have several licensed vehicles to choose from.
On the Xbox, there's 4x4 Evo 2. (It's also available on the Gamecube, and that version has four exclusive vehicles and four exclusive tracks). Much like the first Evo, it has several different licensed vechicles and lots of upgradeable parts, and a deep career mode. Not only can you race on over 30 different courses, but you can also do missions, which include discovering an ancient city and looking for a stranded forest ranger's jeep. However, the A.I. of the opponents leaves much to be desired, and you can't own more than four vehicles at a time. You have to join teams to be able to buy the race trucks, and you'll quickly find out the whole team thing should have just been scrapped entirely. Also, it seems like almost every tournament has you racing the same 6 or 7 courses over and over again. There are some courses that aren't used much, and that's a shame. However, I've spent a lot of time with the GCN version and I've had a lot of fun with it despite the flaws. It's worth at least $10-15 imo.
All of these games should be easy to find for twenty bucks or less; perhaps even ten bucks or less.
On another note, I'm still waiting for the Gran Turismo of 4x4 racing. Something where I can have a huge garage of trucks and SUVs. If a game was released that was not only like 4x4 Evo 2 but succeeded where it failed, I would definitely buy it.
Hope this helps!
ALL versions of 4X4 Evo and Evo 2 have glitches and flaws, no matter what system you play it on. It's just something that you learn to live with if you're a fan of the series. The trick is learning to drift the truck without rolling it. (throttle control is the key) Definitely worth owning, since it IS the closest answer to Turismo For Rednecks. Get yourself a fully souped up Durango and stomp the comp.
I used to play this online on the Dreamcast. Good times with insanely MASSIVE online-only super-tracks. One lap typically used to take over 10 minutes to complete if you DIDN'T get lost.

Yes the 4 X 4 evo games are good.
MY favoraite off-road racing game though is Shox for PS2. Yeah i know it's not 4 x 4 but as a off-road racing game it's awesome. cheap too should be able to find it for under $10.00.

Thanks for posting your entire posts. I too have been looking. I have been wanting 4x4 EVO 2 for the GC for some time now, but can't find it anymore new.

The only place I've seen it new is at my local Wal-Mart, and they have 2 copies marked at $50. LOL
Check GameCrazy if you don't mind used copies. I got mine there for $8.99 with the MVP card (it's $9.99 before the MVP discount).

You know what, now that I think about it my local Wal-Mart still does have copies in for $50. No way am I paying that. I didn't buy a copy when I had a chance at a couple local TRU's, they were selling them there for only $20. Didn't have the money at time, now they are all sold out.
I might just have to turn to ebay for one. I want to find one new.

I found one used at EB for $20, so far it's a great game and I'm enjoying it.
