Hi Folks,
I recently won an auction for some documents dealing with the NWC contest. The guy who owned them, Adam Misosky, almost won the whole competition (came in second in his age group). I conducted an interview with him and Dave Allwein put it up on his site along with the documents. The documents are a very interesting historical insight into the NWC. Check it out!:

this is pretty on-topic actually... I'm going to shuffle this over to the VG forum since it deserves to go there.

Very cool article. I wish more than anything that I would have gone to the NWC when I was a little kid. By the way, how much did you pay for the documents? They are very cool! ;)

I think with shipping it was around $78. A lot, I know, But I knew that if someone else got them, they probably wouldn't share them with the world. I wanted to see to it that didn't happen.

Well, its a good thing I didn't find this on ebay, otherwise you would have had one more bidder trying to win it! :D

As a matter of fact, I do! Read this:

Scroll down to the personal stories, and read mine. Dave has the best NWC site on the net, so I agreed to tell my story there.

Well, my bid price was really high...I was surprised I won at such a low price.
So anyone wanna sell me a grey or gold NWC cart?
Oh, and you are all most welcome. :)

Well, I think things like this, rare but not as collectible as some items, go for high and low amounts. Always just depends.
Thinking about it, my high bid probably would have been around $150 or so.
I am really glad that you won it though!!!!

Nice interview and great scans, thanks! The link to the planetnintendo site about the NWC is also very informative.
Noteworthy:
1) the Thor Aackerlund and NP story is missing. Nintendo Power hyped the NWC all year long, but because of Aackerlunds deal with Camerica right after the finals NP simply ignored the results. Camerica at the time released unlicensed games for the NES.
For NP the finals never took place. Nothing about the winners, nothing about the big event at Universal studios. It was a promotional loss for N. Aackerlund would have been the ideal guy for ads and promotions for N. Aackerlund then appeared in ads for Camerica-games and NES accessories in other game mags.
2) The signed contract to enter the NWC makes it clear that N didn't have a case against Aackerlund; additionally, it would have been bad PR for N and great PR for Camerica if N had challenged him in court.
3) For the ones who are interested in pics of the NWC and have NP: pics can be found in the July/August 1990 issue, p. 90, 91; the 'hottest contenders' were pictured in issue 18, p. 94, 95 (among them Aackerlund). The site uses these pics from NP.
4) A picture and description of the rare gold version of the NWC cartridge of the Player's Poll contest (26 cartridges were given out) can be found in the July/August 1990 issue on pages 98 and 99.
Again, thanks for the scans of the documents!

Sorry for the typo, my bad; yep, of course 26 gold cartridges were won by the first prize-winner and by the 25 second prize-winners. A list of them are in vol. 18. p.99.
I edited my post so that no misunderstandings and confusions occur. :)

About good old Thor Aackerlund, does anyone wonder what he is doing today? I think that would be an AWESOME interview for some website to do. Tracking him down couldn't be too hard.
rbudrick,
You gotta get an interview with the NWC master himself! That would be sweet!!! 8-)

Apparently, Thor is very difficult to get a hold of. I believe only one or two people successfully interviewed him in the last several years. I think he works for a technology company in TX...Houston, maybe, iirc.
The last person I remember that successfully got a hold of him got a few questions answered out of him, and then Thor stopped responding, strangely. I think there's a thread somewhere on DP about it.
The weird thing is, if memory serves, Thor seemed very enthusiastic about being interviewed, and then nada.
I would gladly do it if someone could get me his contact info. Any particular questions people would want asked (I know, a bit premature for this, but hey)?

I guess I have been a little hard to get ahold of. I can do an interview on msn messenger if someone feels like it. I'm notoriously bad about keeping up with email :(
