Hi Folks,

You may have heard recently that someone finally cracked this. The guy that did it mentions in this thread that he will make some of these if enough people want in. Cost is undetermined at this point. It will probably be around 58 euros, I believe, but this is not firm as of yet.

Personally, getting a GG hooked to a TV has been a pet project of mine for some time now, but I only had limited success:

http://www.geocities.com/vjkemp/

Victor Kemp and I worked on this quite a bit a few years back and pretty much gave up until someone with a better technical knowledge base came along. Finally, they did! Strangely enough, it turns out Victor's and my work was instrumental in cracking this. So, if you are interested, show Xavier your support to get these built by making a post saying you want one...or ten, heh heh. Please? :D

If and when it gets to the point that I can just plug it into my GG without any techy stuff, I'll be among the first in line.

You will have to solder a few leads on to your GG. There's no way around that. Also, this design is currently only for the GG with the 2 chip models. Work is in progress on the 1 ASIC models. I believe most are 2...could be wrong.

Yeah, I've been following the SMS Power thread. Should probably have said "minimal techy stuff" instead of "no techy stuff" ;) Looks great tho!

DONE! See my comments in the thread. It may take me a while to save up for it, but the price is very reasonable. I'd still rather have something like a Super Gameboy cart for my Genesis that does this though, or at least a way to hook up my Game Gear to the TV like my Nomad does, so I wouldn't have to mess with any soldering irons, or look at an exposed board that I'm scared to death will get fried somehow, frying my games in the process...

But still, GG games on a TV! That would ROCK so HARD! I have 76 games now, and hopefully more in the future, so I'd have a very busy little TV! I think I'd play GG Pinball Dreams on it first. Then I'd probably have to play all the way through Defenders of Oasis again, just to see it all on a big screen, followed by Crystal Warriors & Shining Force! OMG, I need more GG games! Seeing them all on a big screen will surely make me have to buy alot more!

Well, you're not going to find a cheaper one. And that's certainly less than an official GG-TV dev tool would be.

Very cool. I will hafta think about this.

$58 is too expensive? Gee, I guess there are people more poor than I am!

Yes, like people who buy mega drive encyclopedias and try to sell them for the same price! and guess what...nobody bough it!

I have seen dev GGs go for $500 on more than one occasion. They ae rare as hell...probably R10s, I would think. 58 euros is a STEAL in comparison. Besides, it may come out to be much less..

I was hoping this was going to be some sort of reverse Master Gear, allowing GG games to be played on an SMS. Has this ever been attempted?...it would seem to be an easy fix, but then again I'm not much of a techie.

I'm going to weigh in as a psuedo-techie and affirm this is a great price for what it is. The Game Gear is not a friendly beast when you start poking around its innards. That it took this long for someone to reverse engineer a feasible solution and market it should be indication of that.

Barring that, play the games on an emulator with a PC that has TV-out and quit whining.

On the one hand, yes, the GG and SMS have similiar hardware design, albeit one is more compact. The problem arises from the fact that the Game Gear is capable of displaying thousands of colors wheres the SMS is not. So while some games might work with such a device, many games would be missing colors and/or animations because of the missing colors.

A PC with TV-out? A real gamer plays his emus on a Dreamcast or XBOX and eventually graudates to building a MAME cabinet. 8-)

i was more hoping for a way to modify a genesis to accept gg games or make a supergamegear..but shit this'll do.

Naa, with the recent release of SMS Plus v0.2 for the Dreamcast the emulation is near perfect and it runs SMS and GG roms. It's pretty damn impressive.

Yup - Again, if you want to play all your GG (and SMS) games on your TV and have a Dreamcast, go check out SMS Plus v0.2 and you can do it for the cost of a CD-R and a little time to get it together.

You obviously haven't grasped what real gaming is about.

This would be better if you could emulate game gear games on another system with an adapter and not have to use a tv out.

Go to www.dcemulation.com and that dream comes true for you, Mr.Gary.
The thing is - for those of us who foolishly buy stacks of game gear carts - this is the exact mod we need.
If only I could get schematics for this, and build the cirtcuits myself. I should look thru those threads again....I didn't click every dang link in the entire thread - I just cut to the chase.....
BTW, I find this hilarious, since I once offered a $50 bounty to do just this, and nobody stepped up to the plate. I even posted it in buying and selling...ah, irony.

Yeah, I would definitely consider buying one. The fact that it would eliminate the horrible blurring would be reason enough to buy one.

I'd consider getting one but I dunno how confident I'd feel about the having to take my GG apart until I get a spare one at least.

Using the Dreamcast to play GG games on your TV isn't something to supplement physical cartridges, (at least that isn't what emulation is to me) just a suggestion so that more money can be spent on games.

Has anyone actually posted in that SMSpower thread yet? Show your support! They aren't going to be made unless people are willing to pony up.

And please, no more talk of emulation...not the same thing AT ALL. :)

The GG is more powerful than the SMS (graphically) and had many exclusive titles.

Oh, I guess not having the money or real estate to own an entire arcade of my own makes me a fake gamer. My mistake.

Yeah, Frank! Only lame ass posers who know nothing about games or REAL gaming use emus and such. Go buy an arcade, faker! ;)

Don't be mean to TheRedEye. TheRedEye knows karate and has nuclear weapons. Don't be mean to TheRedEye.

Now go tell Xavier you want a GG-TV Kit!

Now go tell Xavier you want a GG-TV Kit!

But I don't! It's a really cool device, and I'm happy to see someone cracked the damned system, but I'm just not its target market. I prefer having the entire system's library at my immediate disposal in an emulator so accurate that I can't personally see a difference, using S-video connection from my Xbox, with totally customizable button mapping, display options, the ability to dynamically save, access to fan translations and other games I'll never have on cart, and a fast-forward button for boring RPG encounters. But I guess prefering such a setup makes me not a real gamer, despite having owned my Game Gear since its launch and supporting it for years. I guess I'll just go on living my shallow, empty gaming life.

Actually, somebody did buy it on ebay, and for the same price that I paid for it including shipping too... smartass...

So it's just like I said before, most DP'ers are just CHEAP BASTARDS! Now go play with your... oh yeah, that's right, you can't afford one! I guess you can't play with it then...

a. Your logic sucks, it just makes it unaffordable to you.
b. It's okay we all make mistakes.
