This seems like a sweet deal, but I've got to wonder how well the system will work with the lid hinges broken.

Maybe it'd work fine if you put a book on top of it after you loaded the game to hold it down? Maybe the weight of the book would be enough that it could read it correctly.. hmm..

most top loading CD units don't actually need a lid, just short the door switch so it thinks it's always closed and away you go.

You don't need the weight/guidance from the lid to hold the cd in place while it's spinning?

hmm.. you don't with a Saturn, DC or PSX, but now that I think about it a sega-cd does.

Sega CD 2 and TG-16 will need something on top or the CD won't spin at all. PSX, PSOne, DC, GC, and Saturn has locking tab on spindle and can work without lid. I don't have XBox but I think it'd be fine as well.

Sega CD 1 and PS2 are tray loading and should work without the lid. Mainly because they don't need any lid!!! LOL LOL

Xbox is tray loding as well and doesn't need a lid either so are the first two released 3DO's but not the third it's a top loader, so's the Jag and one of the NEO GEOs I think. The CDi has a tray also. But either way it is true that these systems can work without a lid closed by always thinking it's closed but when it comes to multi disc games you need to open the lid in order for them to stop spinning and for the console to know that the disc has been changed. So in that regard having the lid always closed is a bad idea.
