Would you have bought the PSP at its original price if it was not a media player and just played games?

No. I enjoy the games, but I bought my PSP for its MP3 and MP4 playback as a major factor too.

I wouldn't have bought the PSP if it only played games. The ability to rip movies into it was what sold me. I only paid $250 for mine however (almost all trade-in credit though), not $300.

As long as Lumines was still on it, yes. :D

I voted 'yes', but I certainly don't "hate" having a game system that plays movies and music. For me it's just an added bonus, just like the PS2's DVD playback abilities. It just makes the system that much more awsome, but I bought it to play games on.

Another vote for yes but I don't hate a system that has these capabilities. It is a nice plus for sure, but it factored very low in my decision to purchase it.

PSP is awesome .. so far the only preople who hate are the ones who can't afford it.

I voted Yes but "I hate music and movies on a game machine." doesnt express my opinion. I didnt care about the music or movies...I wanted the games. Im pleasently suprised though...I really like its media capabilities. I love this f-er.

I bought it just for the games...the other stuff is just an added bonus. So...yes, I guess.

No, I would not have bought the system—I like to have a bit more functionality to the things I buy. I bought an N-gage BECAUSE it was a cell phone that could play games, play MP3’s, store pictures, radio AND wireless web. When my Ngage got damaged and could not be repaired, I was forced to buy the QD version—which was stripped of all its multimedia abilities (and of it’s USB port).
Fast forward to the PSP—it’s because it has the potential to do all a lot of things besides play games that I wanted to buy it. The use of the MP3 player and movie playback from off the card and soon to be (hopefully) wireless internet connectivity—where I can check my mail and other sites (like DP) without my PC being on. If it just played games…I would have waited.

Thank you for your contribution.

I don't have a PSP, but I can say that the movie/mp3 playback will have nothing to do with my purchasing a PSP at some point down the road. I want a game system for games.

That said, my vote would go to no (if I were voting), because I'm not too interested in any of the available games. Same went for the PS2 - it took me until well after a year of owning a Gamecube to buy it - just because I really wanted to play Contra. When that game comes along on the PSP, then I'll buy it too - it's just that the price will probably be less by then.

Who's the sucker that paid $300 for his? It's $249.99 MSRP. No, games don't count. Otherwise I paid about $2,000 for my Xbox.

I perfer only games for my game machines. I really could care less about movie and music playback, considering I have already spent high $$ amounts for those things respectivily.
And the cost would have been lower too.

Well, in Canada the MSRP IS $300 CDN without any game...

i never thought id use the media functions, but theyre pretty cool. I bought it on gaming mainly due to the fact of a new resident evil for it (see the new EGM)

How would not including movie and music playback functionality have lowered the cost of the PSP?

I voted yes on this one. I certainly dont hate the fact that it does what it does but I dont ever really leave the house with it so all of the extras are kind of pointless. If I am not at home I am doing something so I dont really have time to play games.

I'm a major Tales fanboy, so Tales of Eternia alone would've justified my PSP purchase. You can't even do much with the music and movies without a bigger memory card (Which I have yet to buy,) though the extra features do interest me.

Yes. I bought my PSP as a gaming machine not a media center. Music and movie functionality are nice, but I could easily do without them.

I have yet to use mine for any purpose other than games and I probably never will. In fact, it almost ticks me off all the extra stuff is there. You know that had to take away from processiing power for games.

It seems like an absurd idea to some people if a system can't do 1,000 things anymore. Just give me games. That's what I bought it for.

First, let me say I sort of wish we had 'Anonymous Coward' capabilities here at times like this, because I don't want to be known as a Grammar Nazi. However, the above is a pet peeve of mine and hopefully by shaming myself like this I can possibly spread a tiny bit of enlightenment.

If you read the above carefully, and actually think about what is written, you'll see that by saying "I could care less", what is meant is that the writer DOES CARE some. It seems apparent to me, from context, that the writer intends to say he/she couldn't care less, rather than the opposite.

I know, this is some stupid grammar-police style post, but the above mis-statement really bugs me and hopefully this will get somebody somewhere to stop saying it.

Honestly, when I first heard the saying sometime around 3rd grade, I was really confused, as the person obviously meant exactly the opposite of what she was saying, and I just didn't get it.

Now then, carry on....

edit: Oh, and to get a little bit on-topic -- there's no way I could afford to get a PSP and any games or movies right now, but if I could and did, I'd appreciate and use the multimedia facets, probably as much as the games.

Yes. I only planned on using mine for gaming. The extra features are just nice perks.

Certainly. I bought my PSP as game playing machine. As cool as the extra features may be, there are more cost effective ways of getting quality MP3 playback. The whole MP4 movie thing is kinda meh to me...maybe if you're into downloading anime or whatever off the net and putting it on a card. But I just don't think that it's all cost effective-cards are expensive for such a small amount of space (in comparison to other media types, of course).

Yes I would have but the ability to play movies and music was a very strong selling point for me.

I bought mine primarly for gaming, but all the other stuff is a welcome additon. Now I'm just waiting for some emulators.

(I know I don't have one yet, but I think I can answer the question anyway, as I still want one).

Would I want one if it were games only? Yes. But not as much as I do knowing it does other stuff. Portable games machines are cool - portable games machines that can do other things as well are even cooler.
