I was wondering which game was the first to use a pre-rendered 3D intro - I guess it was one of the early CD games (arcades might have had them earlier). I personally hate the look of early rendered 3D, everything looks cold, lifeless and like shiny plastic, the lighting is ugly and the camera movements look robotic. It's interesting historically though ;)

One of the oldest I know of is actually a floppy game, Awesome on Amiga had an intro with the usualy spaceship stuff, but I guess it was pretty good for 1990. Maybe some PC Engine CD-ROM games had rendered intros?

What about the Sonic 3D intro?

Another Amiga game, Dark Century (Titus 1990) also had a rendered intro IIRC. I wouldn't be surprised if the earliest was something on the Amiga -- the platform was quite popular for 3d rendering back then.

True, sounds logical :) Still, maybe arcade games already had that before 1990?

Well, Sonic games didn't show up until 1991, so technically they're already out of the game ;)

Did the original Warcraft have a rendered intro? And what year was that? WC2 was the first I ever saw, but I know it wasn't the first. Or maybe some of the bits in Myst were the first I saw. But I don't think Myst had an intro.

Does Betrayal at Krondor count? With its 4-5 frames of "rendered" intro?

Flashback the quest for the identity had the first 3d intro I ever saw... I guess your talking about cgi? I dunno.

BAK is from 93 and Warcraft (the CD version had videos I believe) from 94, rendered stuff appeared pretty often by then already I think.

Sothy: yea, you can call it cgi too I guess ;)
