Hi! Does anyone have for sale a modded Genesis that will play the PAL version of Alien Soldier? I have a US Genesis but I need a modded one with the 50/60 switch I guess. Or, does anyone know if I buy a Game Genie and use the codes with it that I can play the PAL version of Alien Soldier on my US Genesis. Thanks! @_@
I also was thinking buying the Japanese copy of Strider as I heard it is not edited like the US version. So I guess I need the console modded to play Japanese Games also...

Maybe Krazy_Kamino could mod one for you :)

I do the mods... however youll need to get hold of an RGB AV Cable for it...

Ask about it with "Ghoul's N Ghosts" i sent him a Modded Megadrive with a Blue LED! Region swittches and 50/60hz switches! The real multi region deal! ;-)

It's a dead simple procedure really - no need to pay someone else to do it.
I've never heard of anyone killing their MD/Genesis by trying it, but even if that worst-case scenario happens, another Genny is what, $10? Probably cheaper than sending it to someone else to get modded, anyway.

People around here seem to be far to paranoid about opening their consoles, if you ask me.

As far as I know the 50/60Hz switch doesn't affect the video output so you will get NTSC composite from your Genny even if play a PAL game.

To get PAL composite from your Genny you'd have to change the crystal.

I have some great Megadrive/Genesis import carts if your interested

A bit expensive, but they will play 99% of games, as they have dip-switches on the back, so you can play the protected games,

On an NTSC unit switched to 50hz, the screen will roll and the color will disappear. If you have a TV with vertical hold you can stop the rolling, but color will still be gone.

That's because it's at 50Hz, not because it's a PAL signal. The terms are often interchangable, but they aren't the same thing.

A Genesis will always output NTSC, unless you change the crystal like davidleeroth said.
Similarly, a PAL console can output a 60Hz signal if modded, but it'll still be a PAL signal.

But... and this is what I was worried about, as long as you have the 50/60 switch on your Genesis...you can boot up the PAL version of Alien Soldier in 50mhz and then switch it to 60mhz to play it here in the states. You would not have to replace the crystal. (This is what davidleeroth told me) OR, if you have a Game Genie and the codes for PAL Alien Soldier, that should work also. I will be testing THAT as soon as the game and the Game Genie arrive in the mail and I will report back.

I'm well aware of why it rolls. I was simply indicating what would happen if you were to switch it to 50hz. DLR said "the 50/60Hz switch doesn't affect the video output" and I wanted to clairify that statement.

Yes, once booted you can switch it back. As long as the program wasn't written to periodically check the status of the 50/60 line, you shouldn't have any trouble with it.

I don't think Alien Soldier was written to periodically check....that would suck if it did...hehe 8-)

Yup, either should do the trick.
Modding (or a convertor w/dipswitches) avoids needing to find GG codes for each game, but if you're just wanting to play Alien Soldier then the GG should be fine.

Actually I want to buy some imports also. I have bought several for the Saturn and love them...Why oh why did the US get screwed on all the great games??? One I want to buy is the Japanese Strider...I heard it is unedited unlike the US version. I'm sure there will be others (My wife will be sooo pleased I'm spending MORE money on games and consoles...esp since I'm 50 yrs old....oh welll...once a gamer, always a gamer :D

I've only seen one game that periodically checks the region and that's Mega SWIV, which does every time you return to the title screen.

Game Genie is just fine for PAL Alien Soldier. I use mine for my JP Pulseman as well.
