View Full Version : How far could you reduce your collection if forced

I'm in the process of moving and when that happens you are foced to see how many game you really don't play (that may not bother many collectors). I started thinking that while I really enjoy collecting and I enjoy all of my consoles if needed I could reduce my collection down to just a few what would they be. I brought my console list down to 3 from over 15 and games down to 13 from over 400. Some of these are my favorite games and some of these are just games I can play over and over again. How far could you go?

NES with:
Tecmo Super Bowl
River City Ransom
Wall Street Kid
Baseball Stars
Super Spike V Ball

Dreamcast with:
NFL 2K1
Soul Caliber
Dead or Alive 2
Marvel vs Capcom 2
Ikargua

N-Gage with:
Pathway to Glory
Pockey Kingdom
Fifa 2005

Me? Well, I could probably downsie it to maybe a handful of PC games, a few next-gen titles, and a couple of my old-school favorites. All, in all, I could whittle it down to around 20-30 titles and maybe 4 systems. Still... selling off the rest of my collection would just kill me. I hope I'm never in a situation in which I would need to do that.

No cutting down for me. I'd just bribe my friends with more beer and pizza to help me move all my stuff. Seriously, I moved 6 months ago and I got a ton of crap for all the game stuff they had to move, but it's so nice to have it all now in one place. MM....room of doom.

I've already thought about reducing mine. But I can only think of maybe 30 games I would willingly part with. If I HAD to, I could probably drop 100 games. But it's the darn NES collection and Sega CD and PSX Longbox and Saturn games I can't part with even one.

One console, one game.

Atari 2600 + Custers Revenge.

One of the greatest rewards ever in a video game!

From the DP Classic Guide:

This is one of three X-rated games to be released by

Mystique. Although these may seem tame by todays

standards, at the time of their release they caused

quite a controversy. Inside the oversized outer box

was a fake leather case that housed your cart.

http://www.digitpress.com/dpsightz/atari2600/custersrevenge.gif

Description: "Custer's Revenge" is especially notorious,

as the rape of an American Indian woman is the central

theme of the game. Predictably, feminist groups and native

Americans protested loudly. The slogan on the game

says "When you score, you score!". An interesting idea

(adult videogames) gone awry. Adapted later into

Playaround's "Westward Ho". Mystique was a division of

American Multiple Industries and based in Northridge, CA.

The carts themselves were made in Hong Kong. At the

Mystique booth at CES in 1982, business cards were given

out with the name of Joel H. Martin, who worked for a

company called Mindspring that was based in Hong Kong.

According to the company rep, he was the programmer of

their early X-rated games.

I have had to reduce my collection for financial reasons. The title doesn't really matter to me because I can always pick it up later once things improve. It came down to what I would get for a game and whether or not that was worth my time.

This is a great topic... Jerk... I'd rather choose between my children(if I had any :P ). But if I had to choose, I would definitely have to include:

NES
The Legend of Zelda
Super Mario Bros(The version including Duck Hunt 8-) )
Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!

SNES
Super Mario Kart
The Legend of Zelda : ALttP

N64
Goldeneye 64
Super Mario 64
The Legend of Zelda : OoT

Like I said, its killing me to have to leave such great games out but this is my final answer...

Well.....I may most definitely be the odd man out here, but the idea of living with one system and a decent library of games seems like heaven to me. Just to taste what it's like to be Joe Average. LOL

I've thought about dumping it all except for one system.....but you'd have to sacrifice some good games that aren't cross platformed.

Dreamcast with Phantasy Star Online. (character maxes at lvl 100)

Cube with Phantasy Star Online Episode 1 & 2 Plus. (character maxes at lvl 200)

N64 with Super Mario 64....World Driver Championship....Ocarina Of Time

Every month or so I always find 3 or 4 titles I can live without...although during that time I've added at least double. I'm always thinking about downsizing the collection...I was actually able to drop 50 or so games a couple of months ago, but I would like to loose more. I know there are some games there that I'll never play again (and I only collect games I like), but everytime I sit down and attempt it, I get no where. Keep your eyes peeled on Buying and Selling...one of these days I'm going to have a shit load of stuff listed. ;)

I have decided to never ever (unless medical bills or some such forced it) sell anything out of my collection again. I have never done it and not regretted it later. Every time I have been forced to spend way more to get the item back. I may purge systems that I never play that were just kind of extraneous pickups - like the Supervision but to sell off my Atari collection or NES collection is just not going to happen.

I could sell it all. I'd have a lot of trouble with some systems, NES and Saturn, and selling my Game Boys would just about kill me. But, I could do it. Once it's gone, it'd be a relief almost. I'd move on to something else. Maybe get serious about photography, or renew myrelationship with my books. It'd be hard, but life goes on.

Oh, and I'd really hate to lose my Atari. It, and about 20 games were my grandfather's.

I just reduced my PS2 collection 'cause I've been heading down that collection path and I'd rather stay on the gamer path. It's just so easy to get caught up in collecting when you visit this site! :)

I could probably get rid of a few consoles: Intv, O2, Colecovision, 3DO, Saturn. I'd keep all my Atari and Nintendo stuff, although there would be quite a few NES games that I could live without (I could live without most of my Atari games too, but I have to keep *something* fun :) ). I'd have some PSX/DC/PS2 games I could get rid of as well.

Scary to think about though :)

reduce my collection!

Well, I have sold off game in place of multi-carts, for these systems:
Vectrex
Atari 5200
Atari 2600 (just the games on the Multi)

I've kept my O2 collection though.... :D

Crush Crawfish
04-11-2005, 04:16 PM
I actually did reduce my collection a bit...from about 1200 to 900 games, because I just had way too many crappy games that I just bought for the sake of having, never to actually be played. I STILL have too many games though. I might reduce It more sometime, though as It's still very tough to decide what I want to play, and the endless backlog is kinda driving me insane. :/

04-11-2005, 04:29 PM
If I absolutely had to, I could probably just about cut everything down to 5 or 10 titles per system. I'd keep it mixed up though, and keep my Mega Man Collection for the PS2, so that I could have an extra slot for my NES stuff. The games I'd have to keep for sure are:

NES: Contra
SNES: Super Metroid
N64: No Mercy (Or VPW 2)
Gamecube: Super Monkey Ball 2
PS2: Contra: Shattered Soldier

I could find enough in those 5 titles to keep me occupied for a long, long time.

WOW X_x I’m noticing several people saying that they would never sell off any part of their collection. As for myself, I could sell over half of it. You see, I would rather have quality of quantity. The majority of my collection is really rare or popular items. All of my other games and systems I really just found at garage sales or sniped on ebay. When room becomes tight I will sell of most of these.

Uzi 9mm
04-11-2005, 05:03 PM
I could probably get rid of:

-Double PS2 Games (Dark Cloud 1&2, Jak and Daxter, etc..)

-Some of my double/common NES games I could easily find online or at a thrift shop...

- Most of my PS1 collection. Not much in it, and most of it are crappy, easy to find games.

-A few Genesis games, most of the ones I own are extremely common.

-Some GBA games, can't really think of any right now....

It wouldn't really kill me to reduce my collection to only my NES and maybe around 25 games. I would need SMB 3, LOZ, Crystalis,Dr. Mario, and a few other classics.

slip81
04-11-2005, 05:18 PM
I'd keep the following:

SNES, Genesis, Saturn, GBA, PS2 all with the current games I own.

That means I'd be getting rid of
SMS, N64 GC, Xbox, 2600 Gameboy, NES, Sega CD, Dreamcast, plus all the game I have for each system.

If I HAD to reduce my collection, I would get rid of all my pre Nintendo stuff first, then my PS stuff then my X-box stuff.
I would never get rid of my Nintendo stuff- I might pick over the games to lighten the load, but that would be tough...
Actually getting rid of almost anything I have would be tough.

Funk Buddy

I almost had to do this at the end of 2003, but luckily I collect worthless crap and no one would have bought it. Well, I'm sure someone would have, but the imports would have been the deal killer. The average person doesn't want to deal with them from my experience.

The part of my collection that would be easiest to rid myself of would be the Nintendo side of things. Not bashing Nintendo, but I'm a Sega guy. I would feel really bad about my GB/C/A collection though. Then I'd ditch my PC Engine, Atari, PS and Wonderswan.

Out of my items left I clear out the weak and seldom played systems: Sega CD, 32X and Genesis. This leaves me with PS2, XBox, Saturn, DC, GG and NGPC. I could get rid of 3/4 of my PS2 games, 1/2 Xbox, 1/2 Saturn, 1/2 GG, 1/2 NGPC and 1/4 DC.

I could do this, but will not until it's my only option. :D

About some things I can be a very sentimental person, so first and foremost I wouldn't want to part with any of the games that were gifts to me from my family and boyfriend. Sometimes it's less what game it is and more about how it's THAT copy. Even if I bought other copies to replace them with, I'd be heartbroken to part with Donkey Kong Country 1, 2, and 3, each of which was given to me by my grandma.

Also, I'm sentimental about the games and systems that I personally bought when I was a kid. I sure hope my original SNES never craps out. :(

After all that sentimental stuff, I'd want to keep all my tri-Ace games, of course, and other various games that I really love.

In the end, though, it would be hard to make me part with any of my games. I'm not the kind of collector that goes after anything and everything. Quality is always the number one thing I'm concerned with, so a good majority of my collection is filled with games that I at least somewhat enjoy. I got some crappy sports games and such that I've acquired here and there that I don't especially care about, but I hold onto those more so because there's no point in selling them than to add to my collection numbers.

I went through a similar situation just over a year ago. However, my move was not just across the country, but instead across the Pacific. I ended up cutting my collection down from about 1,700 games to about 650. The system that took the biggest hit was the Saturn, went from about 800 import titles down to roughly 250. Was it worth it? Considering how much I paid to ship all the stuff I kept, probably not. Would I do it again if given the choice...you bet! :embarrassed:

If I had to get rid of some of my collection, I would likely sell my Gamecube stuff, and get rid of all the really crappy snes games. I would keep the best snes games (ie all my RPGs, the Marios, Zelda).

scooterb23
04-11-2005, 09:35 PM
Just for reference: I have currently 31 systems, and over 1400 games in my collection.

I feel very secure though that I could reduce myself down to 7-8 systems, and a couple hundred of the games if I needed to tomorrow.

After that, it'd begin to reaaaalllllyyyyyyy hurt. :)

And if I weren't so lazy...I'd have a list of games I'm wanting to get rid of as it is all set.

I can speak from personal experience - I HAD to, and didn't hesitate for a second.

I had a LARGE, and MINTY collection, but sometimes it's about priorities.

I wish you luck, and just remember - there is almost nothing that you cannot acquire again if you really want it.

Take care,

Picking specific games is too hard but I think I could narrow it down to these systems:

one 80's system:Atari 2600
one 90's system:SNES
one current system:xbox
and one handheld: either psp or GBA

I feel bad for my genesis and turbo grafx just writing this list :(

GrayFox
04-11-2005, 10:31 PM
I don't think I could narrow it down much.

I mean, obviously every single Sonic game I'd keep. I'd want all my Saturn, DC, Genesis... well everything Sega.

And then, I'd want most of my SNES stuff, and my current-gen stuff, and then PS1 stuff, and PSP, Gameboys, etc.

Very hard question :P

Flack
04-11-2005, 10:33 PM
I'm not sure I fully understand the question I guess. If I HAD to get rid of everything, I would.

If I were just trimming the fat so to speak, say because of moving, the first thing I'd do is sell about 15 of my arcade games. I'd probably keep a few classics like Karate Champ, Q*Bert, Gauntlet II, and of course my MAME Cabinet to play most of the other games I just sold.

If we're talking consoles ... I could get rid of most of them tomorrow. I'd keep my Xbox and all the ROMs I've managed to squeeze onto it and maybe an older machine like my Commodore 64. Those items are a lifetime of gaming by themselves.

I'm in the process of selling my collection soon, For financial reasons

I'm currently planning on moving across the country with my family and have been getting rid of my stuff little by little. It was easy to weed out the titles that I would probably never play anymore, but then it got down to the point where I had to start picking out the games that I liked :/ . I believe that I went from 500 to 250 games. I also need to get rid of my comics, manga, anime, figures, etc. I'll definitly keep all of my Sega items/games and older systems (I can always rebuy the current gen systems ), my rare games and favorite games. Hopefully I won't have to get rid of anymore LOL .

Sometimes I think I could sell off everything except for the Sega stuff and ther PCE stuff. Nice amount of money, some more space, and most of the games I really care about would be intact.

Some of the Super Famicom stuff and most of the PC-FX stuff would be really hard to get back, but I wouldn't be all that upset about that in the long run I think.
