I love a game with a good breakaway boss. The big tank guy in smash TV, the stage boss in practically every vertical shooter ever, that sort of thing. these things are just fun to fight. It's nice to see actual progress in the battle.

So, what are some good games for breakaway boss fans? What's your favorite one to break up?

This is probably one of the factors that makes me love Space Harrier so damn much as well.

Without a doubt the best breakaway bosses is those games on the snes that used the super scope (Battleclash?). I loved just picking off a piece at a time. :D

Most of the bosses in Blaster Master for the PS1 had multiple sections that broke off as they died. I think one boss had at least 20 different life bars for his parts.

In Total Carnage, there's a badass boss that goes by the name of Orcus. Just about every part of his body can blown be off in gruesome fashion. Once his eyes take enough damage, he shouts, "My EYE!!" as dozens of eyeballs and fountains of blood gush from his eye sockets.

Seeing the final demise of Orcus is well worth the $2.00 it took just to beat him.

Not necessarily breakaway.....but how about evolutionary bosses too?

Dark Falz done solo with a "legit" character on Ultimate difficulty in Phantasy Star Online Episode One (Gamecube) is fun and can be quite nerve-wracking.

Sounds awesome, I'll have to check that out.

Yeah, dunno if I ever pulled that one off legit and solo, but I'm done...plenty of Falz runs. The first two stages generally go by pretty quick though, heh.

I think it was one of the bosses in '19XX' where the boss changes a few times troughout the battle that was always fun to blow it bits.

There was also Necrosaro in DWIV that "evolved" as you fought him.

Not to so much a breakaway boss, but the transforming boss in Gunstar Heroes, deep in the mine, was fan-freaking tastic. Every time I played it for that first week I was like "Gaddamn that is so COOL...(BLAM)...damn it I died!...But that's so cooool. LOL "

...

Does knocking the armor off of each Fighting Vipers character count? I particularly made it a rule to break away all the female characters' armor. :D

I still grin every time I knock Vega's claw off in a good game of Street Fighter.

Der Fuehrer himself in the original Wolfenstein 3D had that armor that eventually broke off as he screamed "SCHEISSE!!!"

There were quite a few Sonic the Hedgehog bosses like that if I remember correctly.

Hmm... what to say that hasn't yet been mentioned... well, the final boss fight of Giga Wing was one of the most memorable parts of the game. You had 240 seconds to beat this REALLY freaking huge battleship, which, as you destroyed, had its wings break off, shedding down the ship, and finally getting to the core. At its base, it's really just eight cubes forming together into one cube that's not much bigger than your ship, but it flings projectiles at you like monkey crap!

In the old Taito game Gladiator, almost all the enemies you fought had armor to break off, including the female fighter Irene. In the Japanese version, she is absolutely TOPLESS if you hit her just right. ;)

And does King from Art of Fighting count? Her shirt breaks away if you hit her with a fireball! :D
