Hulllooooooo!

This is my first post in a long time (maybe even a couple years), as I've been largely out of the collecting hobby for a while, just with school and work and such, but this weekend...

A friend of mine who works at a thrift store tells me he just got a Colecovision in, and would hold it for me and cut me a good deal. "Great!", I think, so I head on out and after climbing over the mountains of crap that live in the back rooms of any large thift store, he takes me to his electronics testing area... And there it is, my "Coleco", which upon even first glance (Considering the fact that it's still in it's original box) is an Odyssey, along with a second box of games. Sweeeeeeet.

Now, as I am considering selling this gem, I don't really feel like disclosing exactly what I paid for it, but... suffice to say, it was a pittance.

I'm currently working on itemizing and photographing the collection. Everything, including 6 additional boxed games, appears to be complete with all of the Odyssey's legendary accessories.

Hundreds of cards, play money, dice, game boards, television overlays, ect. All in essentailly perfect condition.

I'll be posting TONS of pictures here when I finish photographing the collection!

I look forward to selling these pics! I think substantial finds deserve their own postings, personally.

Cheers!

The Odyssey2 is relatively common, at least where I live (Knoxville, TN.. Magnavox factory where they made the Od's was here), but the original is a very rare find.

Paraphrased from DP Guide:

Released in 1972

Had no processors.. Just transistors and diodes

"Programs" were hard wired into cartridges that basically
rewired the system to play varients of what was essentially pong

No color, no sounds, no scoring.

Only graphics come from plastic overlays for your television screen (Coming in both 13 and 19-25in TV sizes)

Although the system itself is quite rare (And one in good condition obviously rarer), due to the massive amount of accessories / cards / counters / dice / boards / overlays, finding a complete system with all the goodies after all of this time is extremely rare.

Congrats on your find (wish I could find an Odyssey on the cheap.)

I'm looking forward to seeing your pictures once you have them ready.

Pics!

Sorry there's a lot of 'em, but this stuff is neat! If anyone has a special interest in more pics or wants to make scans of the manuals / overlays for historical purposes, this is an excellent "mint" specimen to do so with, so just let me know!

Nice find -- congrats! I've still never found any original Odyssey stuff in my years of hunting.

Not to hijack the thread, but since you live in Knoxville, if you ever find an Odyssey2 with joysticks that look like this, please tell us about it:

http://www.classicgaming.com/o2home/collect/hardware/joystick_o3.jpg

It's an Odyssey3 joystick. I have it on good authority that O2 models exist with these types of joysticks and that they were only sold around Knoxville, but I've yet to see photographic evidence of one.

I don't care about the system but yet I'm still jealous. Getting any truely vintage game system that mint/complete really is something to brag about. Good job!

@_@ that is a great find and in a thift store no less. that's just amazing. Great pictures. I'd love to have something like that just as a collectors piece. I've never actually played one a little before my time but I'm a real fan of old electronics. Probably why I like collecting video games so much.

You know, I got one of these in similar condition (there wasn't a box though...if there was anything it was the styrofoam and i didn't take it so it was probably busted, been couple years now), and when I made a thread about an estimatede value no one had much to say. :P How much is the going rate on this stuff nowadays?

I've got the unit, two controllers, most of the cards/chips/dice and i think all but one of the game thingies. And a gun controller as well.

Great find though...sorry to threadjack a bit there.

edit: just checked the online guide and sure enough there's an section for it. I swear that wasn't there last time I checked...and now, I think I'll go through my stuff real quick and see what I got.

Hehe, I'll be honest: I paid $10 for all of this.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Determining the value of this thing is difficult.. if you go by the DP prices, which are for loose / incomplete / missing pieces / ect, systems, this stuff would add up to around $300 worth... Obviously though, being as complete as it is, and in as wonderful condition as it is, it could be worth significantly more to the right collector....

But, then again, "the right collector" is a tough thing to find for a piece like this, hehe. Of all venues possible, this forum includes a good percentage of people in the world who could conceivably have any interest in this piece, and even within this forum I'd bet only a tiny fraction would even for a moment consider purchasing it... So, I have my doubts if it's realistic to expect a metric butt-ton of money for the set, at least without waiting ages upon ages to find someone willing to pay said metric butt-ton.

Just pondering. Perhaps there's more of a market out there than I realize, and I'd like to think there is, but until I can figure out where to find such a market, I imagine I'll just have a very nice centerpiece of my collection, hehe.

Although, I don't mean to sound greedy by any means... But, it's hard not to think about a fat check (or at least a complete Intellivision game collection + 10 extra controllers for my freakin' INTY2) when you stumble across something like this, hehe.

.........Although, just for the record, as I'm not particularly interested in the Odyssey for it's own sake, if you're "very interested", do feel free to contact me :D

I actually got mine for free *runs awy from people*

Honestly though that's how a lot of these are probably obtained, for nothing or next to it. I too wonder if anyone would every want to pay for my stuff. Honestly, mine isn't in as perfect of condition, and there are imporant things missing, like game chip #9 and the video cord. And while I'm not really interested in it per se either, it is one of those "I have given this machine a good home" kinda things and I am remotely attached to it in that kinda way. But yeah, if I knew someone who really would truly appreciate it and whatnot (and gimme decent cash for it) I'd probably pass it along to it's new home, and come visit it sometime, heh.

Great find!

So does the unit actually work? Have you played a game on it?

What you could do is list it in our B&S forum and say the min that you are willing to accept on it. Or put it up on EBay with a reserve so you can at least sell it for your min.

BTW, I worked in that very same Magnavox plant in Knoxville for a bit one summer when I visted my folks, who moved down there from NH about 10 years ago. :D

Beautiful find - congrats! I remember cracking open the box when I got my Odyssey a couple of years ago (see ancient thread here (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11902)), and there's definitely a feeling sorta like opening the Lost Ark if you know what you've got your hands on. Only it doesn't melt the skulls of quite so many people in your vicinity, and you can keep your eyes open.

FWIW, I also had a working, untouched-since-1972 specimen, and I paid over $200 for the whole set, light gun and all. So if you're dead set on parting with it, methinks you can make your $10 back.

If anyone's interested in seeing that working specimen, I hook it up and have it ready to play every year at OVGE (http://www.ovge.com). :)

Pics are loading now - looks awesome! Since I picked up Ralph Baer's new book I've been thinking it would be cool to get an Odyssey. Yours is probably too rich for my blood though :)
