... aside from Paper Mario?
It seems like such a lack luster genre, but I'd like to try a few. I've heard mixed reviews on Quest 64, anything else?

I hated quest 64 with a passion...but I haven't played it in years, so my memories are foggy at best.
There really isn't much as far as RPG's go on N64...Harvest Moon 64 is really good, though I'm not sure if that counts as an RPG.

As they already said, Harvest Moon 64. They are both hands down the best in their series, and in my opinion, are some of the best games for the system. They're not tradition RPGs, however if you're looking for RPGs for the system, these are you games...
Although they are quite uncommon..

I thought Quest 64 was alright. Certainly it wasn't the best RPG I've ever played, but I liked it enough in a console severly lacking in RPGs.

i consider ogre battle a strategy game, and harvest moon a simulator. in the vein of traditional turn based rpg's, there are not any other good ones besides paper mario.

The only good "RPG" game for the Nintend 64 would be Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.. And if I played it more, I would also recommend Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask.

Definitly Paper Mario and Orge Battle. What about that Chronicles of Aidren title?
I had Quest 64. Boring and kinda tedius, though beating an enemy larger then you by hitting it with your staff was pretty humorous! LOL

I heard Aidren got mixed reviews, but from the public opinion, it's a pretty solid RPG from what they tell me
and yes I agree on Orge Battle 64, still one of the most impressive RPG on N64 to date.
Quest 64, the first RPG on N64. So short and simplistic, too easy to level up everything (Fire, water, etc.). I was kind of upset when I finished the game within 9 hours on the first day of buying it
Paper Mario was very impressive, I thought the ending was pretty classical and it amazed me that this was a 64 game that still looks pretty to this day.
Imho, when you compare Zelda OoT to MM. Majora's Mask was downright insane, I felt it really used the 64 to it's limit. I ignored MM for many years, until I finished it back in Nov of 04'. I always loved OoT, yet Majora's Mask really changed my opinion very quickly.
I love both Zelda N64 games, since OoT is like LttP in 3D. While Majora's Mask was an upgrade to the sound and graphics with a side-quest in itself to a post-OoT prologue, so to speak.

Harvest Moon 64 (my favorite Harvest Moon game)
Paper Mario
Ogre Battle (kudos for being the system's only tactical RPG)
Those are the system's top tier.
The more open minded RPG goers can also try out Aiydan Chronicles and Quest 64. But really, they're kinda crappy. Quest 64 suffers from terrible to almost unplayble camera angles. And for all you action RPG lovers out there you have Zelda. That's it. 7 games. Take your pick.

I should note I haven't played Aidyen Chronicles yet, it's the last n64 RPG I have to pick up actually, it's just I always hear how not good it is. But that's not surprising when the game's being compared to the likes of Paper Mario, Harvest Moon, Ogre Battle and Zelda. It's most likely unfair of me to automatically lump it in with Quest 64, as I'm pretty sure there are probably very few gaming abominations that are really seriously that bad.
So yeah Aidyn Chronicles, no opinion, play it at your own risk. :P

Ogre Battle 64 is actually pretty good but not as challenging or as deep as the SNES version which is pretty funny. Enemies don't regenerate so it can be a bit harder to build up strength.

Ogre Battle 64 is a remake, and the Zelda games are only questionably considered RPGs. Harvest Moon is... Harvest Moon. I don't like calling it an RPG, but I don't have a better genre for it. Maybe simulation?
So really, the RPG library for the N64 is:
Quest 64
Paper Mario
Aidyn Chronicles
If you've played Paper Mario and Ogre Battle, just quit right there. You've seen the best the system has to offer.
If Quest were released on the Playstation, it would've been forgotten immediately upon arrival. Because it was the first ever RPG on the N64, people (like me) rushed out and tried it because we were RPG-starved. Well, turns out I wasn't starving enough, because the game was terrible.
Granted, it's been a long time since I played it, so I could give it another try. But I don't think my opinion would change *that* much.
Sure, Nintendo lost Square, but they should've given us SOMEthing. Nintendo got me hooked on RPGs in the 16-bit era, then stopped publishing them. I can't go cold turkey! So Nintendo only has themselves to blame for driving me into Sony's arms.

Aidyn Chronicles; The First mage is one of my favorite RPGs of all time. It's a VERY long game with a massive game world to cover. Lots of nooks and crannies to explore.
The toughest part about the game is that you have to will yourself to get over the first few hours until your character gains his party and gains enough power and speed to make the battles end quicker. If you're constantly losing battles, you need to random battle a bit more. The battles at the start are painfully slow but towards the end of the game your party makes short work of battles containing up to 8 respawning demons. You must also give great consideration to the development of your characters, since you custom choose the attribute gains and where they go.
Find a copy, get rid of your biases (it isn't an Xbox game and can't possibly look like one) settle in and STICK WITH IT. When you hit the snow world (ogre camp) the game really starts to rock. It's a great place to level up because the bears respawn after you kill them and once you leave the immediate area (only the bears), they aren't too hard to kill and give large amounts of EXP. Kill a bear, leave the area, re-enter...wash, rinse, repeat.

" Two of the few upcoming RPGs for the Nintendo 64 made an appearance at Nintendo's Space World show this past weekend: Mother 3 and Super Mario RPG 2.
Mother 3, the latest in the Mother series ( Mother 2 was released in the U.S. for the SNES as EarthBound), has been in development for what seems like forever. Originally intended to be released for the constantly-delayed 64DD, Mother 3 was thought to have been cancelled to the 64DD situation, but has since changed to cart format. The game has hidden in the shadows for years, but details about it have finally surfaced.
Four main characters are known of at this point: Flint, his two sons Ryuka and Krause, and their dog Boney. The way you take control of them is interesting, and similar to Sonic Adventure: The game is split into 'chapters', in which you control a different character in each. The way you progress through the game and experience events is different with each of them. Similar to EarthBound, the story again deals with UFOs: A UFO appears near the town where Flint and his family lives, causing trouble. Flint decides to find out what's going on to protect the town and his family."

WTF are you talking about? I can't tell if your a spambot or a real person. That article was written 11 years ago. Don't you think that if Mother 3 ever came out on the N64 that we'd talk about it in this thread. The Mother series is epic.
And in case you're actually on the computer in 1999 in some strange time machine talking to us, then no, Mother 3 will never be released.

Yes, there were a couple. They weren't well known in the West, presumably because of the language barrier, but they did exist.
Fushigi no Dungeon: Fuurai no Shiren 2 (Shiren the Wanderer 2) - Hardcore dungeon crawling, as you expect from the Mystery Dungeon series.
Zool: Majou Tsukai Densetsu - I really do not know much about this one. It's another Pokemon or Monster Rancher-ish thing, evidently.
Robot Ponkottsu 64: Nanatsu no Umi no Caramel - in the same franchise as the GBC Robopon game which did come out in the US. Pokemon-inspired stuff I believe.
Pokemon Stadium - the first one was Japan only; we got the second and third games as "1" and "2". Barely RPGs at best, but you could perhaps list them thanks to the combat.
PD Ultraman Battle Collection 64 - I don't think this is really a full RPG, but it has RPG-style battles at least... Pokemon Stadium inspired thing perhaps?
There actually were a bit over 80 Japan-exclusive N64 games, few of which have almost any visibility here, but some of which are definitely decent games. Only a couple (Sin & Punishment, Bangaioh) are actually expensive though, most are pretty cheap I think, if you can find them...
In Japan many genres that we don't consider RPGs get tossed in as partially "RPG" in listings too, so to mention some of those... I definitely don't consider these RPGs.
Hamster Monogatari 64 - raising sim/minigame title
Wonder Project J2: Koruro no Mori no Josette - adventure game (raising sim)
Super Robot Wars 64 - strategy game
Shadowgate 64: Trials of the Four Towers (worldwide release) - first-person adventure game
Yakōchū II: Satsujin Kōro - adventure game. Text novel style perhaps?
I've heard Aidyn Chronicles is an amazing game. Haven't played it myself, but have been wanting to.
Aidyn Chronicles is pretty good if you get used to it, and I like the game a lot, but it does have some serious issues that can really affect fun. The framerate is poor. There is no resurrection, so save often because if a character dies they're gone forever (the function was probably removed because of a bug they couldn't fix). Save files can corrupt and be lost forever, so back up your save files and save to multiple files -- you do not want to have to play this up to 100 hour game again if you don't want to! The character art is pretty bad. And finally, the pace is slow and deliberate. Don't expect things to happen fast.
If you can get past those flaws, though, the game has a gigantic world for an N64 game, a pretty good, strategic battle system that is not just button-mashing, many PC RPG elements that are not often seen in console RPGs (which makes sense because it was done by an American team), real depth and complexity, a huge amount of stuff to do with a long quest, sidequests, and lots of places to find and explore, and more. I at least think the pluses outweigh the minuses, but I can definitely understand why it's such a love-or-hate game. Not everyone is going to like it... but it's definitely worth a try, because you might.

Depending on how loose your definition of an RPG is, Mega Man 64 and Shadow Man could also be considered RPGs (tho Action/Adventure is a more appropriate term for them). But if you're going to include those, might as well thrown in the two Castlevania games and the Japan-only Doreamon game. But since Zelda and Goemon have already been mentioned, screw it, might as well bring these up too.

There's also Onegai Monsters, which is another Pokemon wannabe, but it sucks and has a horrendous framerate so best left forgotten.
I can confirm firsthand that Yakouchuu II is a text novel. Mostly still pictures, a whole lot of text, and the occasional option to fork the story. That's about all there is to it. It may have a good story for all I know, but I wouldn't remotely call it an RPG. I'd agree with the rest of your "not an RPG" list too except for SRW64. Its gameplay is your typical strategy RPG a la Shining Force, Final Fantasy Tactics, etc. Everybody needs Wonder Project J2 even if it isn't an RPG, though. :P And of the other games, Fuurai no Shiren 2 is really good too.
I guess some people might call Custom Robo and Custom Robo V2 RPGs since they have very Pokemon-esque questing, but when you get down to battling, it's 100% action like in Virtual On.
Then there's Nushi Tsuri 64 and its sequel. I'm kind of torn on if I think the Legend of the River King games are RPGs. I definitely think they're more deserving of the title than Harvest Moon at least.
