Hey World of Games,

I'm sorry I don't have a clue as to how you can get this infomercial, but there's a very small chance the guy over at x-entertainment.com might have an idea of where to get it or might even have it. I think his name's Matt (haven't been to the site in awhile) and he thrives on collecting stuff like this and writing about it; not all gaming related, but 80s commercials and hard-to-find stuff and the like. Might wanna shoot him an e-mail and see if he would know. I know it's a longshot, but I suppose it won't hurt to ask.

Do you remember what network it played on? Have you tried contacting Phillips directly?

i cant really remember, it was one of those things where every station was playing an infomercial at 3 in the morning in the early 90's! and yes i have been in contact with philips, i have actually made friends on the inside searching for this over the past few years! no luck either!

Hey World of Games,

No, I'm sorry, I don't know him at all. I just remember going to his web site quite a bit in the past and seeing him review some off-the-wall stuff, and reading about how he likes to collect all sorts of things on eBay and places like that that other people wouldn't even think of. Based off of that, I figured I would shoot you a reply in the very slight chance he would have it. I'm guessing he's either impossible to get a hold of or just not replying for whatever reason.

At any rate, I'm sorry that he didn't write back. That really sucks! I wish I could be more helpful.

A few more suggestions ...

I don't know if this is possible, but would TV stations that this informercial was run on still possibly have some sort of copy? I'm sure this is a far-fetched idea, but hey, you never know?

And I'm assuming you've done this ... but I'm sure there are some CD-I fansites out there. Maybe one of the webmasters might have it?

Captain J
05-05-2005, 02:06 PM
yeah ive covered all options. i have been looking for this for 10 years now, and have checked internet, tv stations, philips themselves, and just about every medium possible. i have never looked for anything harder in my life! there have been times where i have been so close, like one time a few years back i had a former philips employee who had an original tape of it and was going to give it to me for free, when he went home to look for it he found out his wife had thown in out with a box of stuff a month before! :( but ive pretty much came to the point where the only way i am going to find it is if someone had recorded it for themselves back in the day or recorded another show late at night and maybe picked that up as well. i cant express any harder how much i want this, as i would be willing to pay a couple hundred dollars for just a simple copy of this!!

Captain J
05-05-2005, 02:14 PM
OK DPers lets get serious about this. 3 hundred beautiful dollars to the person you finds this commercial on any format! i am so exhausted about looking for this for so long that im willing to pay big. you dont even have to give me the original if you own this. JUST A COPY! thats all i ask for. if i had this i feel i would complete my long journey in having it all for the cd-i. a copy on any format is all i ask and just think about all the things you could buy with the cash! a turbo duo with games? yours! a brand new ps2 AND xbox? yours! a leather outfit complete with whips and chains?........ :embarrassed: sorry! get me that commercial! ready.....break!

Well knowing Joe (worldofgames) very well I will answer your question.

Joe is insane, we had him committed from 1992 to 1997 when he was finally released for good behavior. J/K

Joe IS a fanatic collector though, he owns more stuff than many of us could ever hope to have. If it is something he really wants...well he's going to get it. I've seen his collection first hand and his CD-I stuff alone is worth it's weight in gold. Who else has 100 sealed copies of "Muzzy: Teaching kids to speak french" for the CD-I?

Seriously though, help him find this and be WELL REWARDED! He is no joke and you'll see your money. Good luck Joe!

I also found a few resumes of people who worked on it. LOL

i dont have a spare copy but if you email my buddy denise who works for pmpro (an old cd-i company that still has an existing warehouse) at cust01@pmpro.com and ask her for the $5 cd-i list, she will send you a long list of brand new factory sealed cd-i games for only $5 each and shipping is like $5-6 on about 10 titles! bodyslam might be on the list. I finished a large part of my collection that way! and they take paypal as well so no one has any excuse not to pick up a bunch of cheap cd-i games for your collection! :)

I have been looking for a certain item for the last 10 years and the person who can find it for me will be greatly rewarded with rare games or cash!! in the early 1990's when the philips cd-i came out there was an infomercial that they used to play (remember those middle of the night informercials at 3 in the morning when nothing was on?) late at night for the cd-i. it was about a half hour to an hour and it was just a man sitting in a dark room with a cd-i and a "god" voice talking about the "meaning of life" being the cd-i (which is what insiders call the infomercial). it basically shows him various cd-i titles and convinces him to buy one. if anyone has this on tape, dvd, cdi, media file or any other format (maybe you recorded a show one night and it was on there) let me know right away and i will more than make it worth your while!!

Bump It was very late at night and judging by the style and context of the comercial I have come to the conclusion you were either A. Dreaming or B. On some sort of hallucinogenic drugs LOL

Seriously though I hope you find it, I don't know if this helps but there is a television museum in NYC that has pretty much everything. I don't know if they have commercials but they might be able to dig it up in the archives. Good luck on your hunt, you'll find it one day!!!

Yes I understand.

WorldOfGames, listin, You NEED this video - and because I know he is not the only one that is going to read this I will also say it this way, HE NEEDS this video - so you can finnaly calm down, relax, and have closure.

The real reward to me, and hopefuly to all of you, unless you are a bunch of selfish jerks, for finding this video and giving even a copy to WorldOfGames is not the money (even though I will admit, that could be a nice BIG bonus to the side) but rather the joy of knowing you have helped a fellow collector out in his quest, apparently near life-long quest, in finding the one little thing left that he needs to complete his prized section of his prized video-game collection!

I would like to let you know, WorldOfGames, that I have done a little bit of serching on the web for this video and I am always keeping my eyes and ears open for it until the day you find it from someone elese, and if that doesn't happen, until the day I find it and can give it to you!

I am also giving you a free bump with this post now but forst, there is one more thing I want to quote and one more thought I would like to add!

What about a CDI infomercial that warns parents that if they dont buy a CDI their kids will watch Gun toting Clowns wrecking cars on TV. Is this the same or even close? I've seen that one. As a matter of fact, I dont know if he still has it but that was sent directly to our house on VHS by Radionshack. Weird. I'll have to see if he still has that. THere was a VHS he got for Turbo Duo as well. But I hope I dont get your hopes up too much,.... because I dont know the chances of him still owning them.

Hey

Have you tried writing up a web page about it? Over the years I have learned that if you can't find something you are looking for on the net you need to try and make it find you. Let me give you an example.

In the summer of 1973 I was 12 and had a blast hanging out at the swim club and when I wasn't listening to the Archies on the jukebox or playing the new fangled video game called pong, I was noticing a girl for the first time. The following spring as summer was approaching I found myself anticipating more and more seeing that girl again. Only took me a year to realize I had a crush on her. Finally it came time to head back to the swim club.

And she wasn't there and her family had not renewed their membership. :(

All I knew about her was her name. And her last name was not an easy one to spell and not in the phone book. Over the years I found myself thinking about her and wondered if she liked me or even remembered me. A few years back I took a course in search engine technology and learned how to find anything on the net. So after a while of non productive searching the only closer I got was what I thought was the exact spelling of her name. Based on what I was finding I thought it would be a great idea to create a webpage with this story. Basically, everybody googles their name once in a while.

So I wrote the story on a search optimized page with search engine links and I had nothing to do but wait and go to the page avery few days and start my search from there. And about a year later I get surprised by an email. She said a friend of hers ran across the page. And remembered me!

So 30 years after the event I was finally able to let my first crush know :)

Not sure how this compares to a game related obsession :) I did spend 2 years trying to find a Demon Attack cart for the PCjr. So I guess with the right persistance you might be able to find anything..

But I hope I dont get your hopes up too much,.... because I dont know the chances of him still owning them.

that isnt the one im looking for and i actually would be interested that and the turbo duo tape as well. if you get them please PM me to arrange something. there is also an infomercial where a family calls a tv repairman and he comes over and hooks up a cdi. i would also like that but none as important as the "meaning of life" one im looking for. again if you have any media at all, PM me!

VJ

thanks for the advice, i may have to put it on my video game stores website!, www.worldofgamesonline.com (sorry, cheap plug :embarrassed: )

Damn World Of Games, I'm hoping this is the break you've needed too. I haven't been too much help in you locating this CD-I informercial, but I hope you get it.

You say you're from Ohio? I think there used to be a department store that's since gone under called Service Merchandise, or something like that, here in Columbus. I remember they used to sell CD-I's and they would have this demo running on the machine every time I passed by it. I doubt it's the same infomercial you're looking for, probably just a simple demo CD or something like that.

Anyway, free bump I guess. Good luck!

Service Merchandise!! That place was awesome! We had them down in Oklahoma. One of the few places in my area where the NES demo unit wouldnt reset every three minutes.

well here is the update. the guy said that he cant actually watch the tape and he has 3 different ones with dates of 1993, 1994, 1995 so the 95 is out because i know i watched it in at least 94. since he cant watch it i have to take a chance and buy the first tape and see if it is it for $60 and if it is not, buy the second one for $60 also. i just ordered the first one for $65 shipped and it will be here next week so i will let everyone know whats going on with that!

actually if you watch old game shows, usually at the end they would say that their products were supplied from service merchandise! and yes...i hope this is it!
