I was thinking about this awhile ago, but I never thought to ask.

Has there ever been an arcade game that had a camera so your picture could be taken if you had a high score? And if there hasn't, is there a reason why it wouldn't work?

Yes there has, I read about this in an issue of GI. The game was called Clone, I believe. It never made it past the prototype stage because people took pictures of things besides their faces.

Yyyyyyyeah.

Isn't that the same story for the arcade game Journey?

If memory serves, it was going to be a "your face in the game" deal.... but of course, people took pics of other "things", so they slapped a license on it and killed the camera.

There was a toony racing game that took your picture to show over the cars when you were racing can't remeber the name of it but I was the Pingles tube man and a friend of mine was a can of baked beans. }XD

Let's see...

Gunmen Wars (Namco?) - An FPS with a camera at each station to photograph the players.
Mario Kart - Similar idea, I think.
I Can Boogie - Sort of like Eyetoy Groove. The camera is the gameplay.

An awesome game, btw. Many a naughty picture, I have seen.

Yeah, hopefully Pinball Pete's still has that game. It's been there for quite a while, so they probably do. In other words, FOUR PLAYER MASSACRE IN MAY. ;-)

Japanese SNK HyperNeoGeo 64 cabs have a little camera and lcd screen in the marquee area. If you hook two of these cabs together, the cabs show the faces of your competitor on the screen.

But yeah the pic of the guy w/ the highscore would be "interesting."

Stephen Kent has an interview with Ralph Baer in the book "The Ultimate History of Video Games" and he discusses this very subject.

The game (it doesn't describe or name the game) was picked up by Midway in 1980 and placed at a Chicago test site. Quote from Ralph Baer:

"To make a long story short, they put it on display in an arcade in Chicago and it did very well the first day. The second day some guy gets up on a chair, drops his pants in front of the camera, and that's the end of the product."

I remember reading almost that exact same quote in an issue of NextGen, where they stated that theh game in question was Journey (and that the ingame faces of the band members was actually taken with the same camera that would have been put inside the cabinets).
