Looks like games are displacing other entertainment...

"For males, Nielsen said, games now rank only behind DVDs as a purchase category, ahead of CDs, digital downloads and other ways of buying music."
I'm starting to see why companies are eager to find ways to advertise in games...
Still not sure i like it though :-P

It's easier to pirate music than it is to pirate games.
Easy as that.

I steal all my CD's through online downloads, I haven't bought a CD in years (sans pawnshop purchases).
DVD's - Pawnshops only, I won't pay 15.00 for a DVD that's going to be in the pawnshop's for 5.00 in 3 months. Then there's Netflix
Games....buy them as much as possible. Even if I could pirate, I would still buy them. Then again, I don't buy much at full retail price, I usually wait until a major price drop or I can buy it used.
I just realized that I barely support the industry whatsoever.....oh well, least I save money. :)

Most movies I want to see, I just wait for them to come to HBO/Sho/Starz for free. The big ones I buy on DVD. But most of them I watch for free.

Sseriously I've not bought a CD in ages not because I can download it but because the stuff I like is rarely in stock. The stores are over run with crap hip-hop, R'n'B and Nu-Metal none of which appeal to me.

It's the truth. I usually download music or listen to it on the radio. Don't really buy CDs that much. Most of the time, my money goes towards video games.

When it comes to DVDs, I mostly buy anime. These days most movies I see that are released I consider either marginaly good or just plain crap I wont watch beyond the first time.
When it comes to music, I mostly buy either anime soundtracks, Japanese music, or on the rare ocasion, something I find at a local thrift shop I want. Generaly I avoid the domestic music scene as most of the modern music bores me. I dont even bother downloading music due to my conection, but even if that wasnt a problem I would simply avoid it as most music I want to listen to is either to old to be stocked, to played on the radio, or can be found in a year or two when the "fans" trade or sell it in for newer music.
Games are my biggest weakness. I wont deny having a number of roms, but I tend to use them only as a means to an end. Something to tide me over untill I can find the original for a price I want to pay. Which is generaly below 30$. Actualy, now that I think about it, I cant even remember the last time I payed over 30$ for a game.
With so much anime, with so many games, why would I even bother caring what new 5 minute group has came out? Why would I want to buy a CD of some group that sings another teen angst song? Or how big a player/pimp/hustler/gangster they think they are? I have bigger fish to catch that will give me so much more quality enjoyment.

I don't know... I bought 5 cds today for $6. That is more than I have spent on games this year!

I still buy CD's but i dont buy as many as i used to...because i've gotten to the point where i dont like alot of what is being offered.
I just spent the last month (on and off) downloading and creating CD's for various Smashing Pumpkins demos. The last couple of *NEW* cd's i bought were Chemical Brother & Daft Punk and the CD's for a good year prior to that were all music CD's that were 8+ years old.
I do agree that the influx of Hip-Hop & Nu-Metal garbage has made me not want anything to do with current music.
But the survey was spot on as i do tend to buy DVD's most and games second ;)
Well, for me it is the opposite. I've bought more CDs in the last year than video games. Guess I'm making up for all the years before when I didn't buy very many.
As for piracy- I don't do that, at least not music CDs (and if you don't believe that, to bad). CDs don't cost too much, at least not where I buy them from. I'm a big music fan, so....

Hell, games are pretty much all I spend money on, besides food and such. I don't listen to modern American music, and Japanese stuff is way too expensive to import, so I just download my little heart out. I hardly ever buy clothes or stuff like that.
But then, I'm pretty sure I don't reflect the usual young female buying habits. :)

I very rarely buy music. I don't pirate anything these days. I buy DVD's now and then.
Avg. per month (mind you the games wouldn't be in their data because the games I buy are old and many are also import).
Games: $250 (I need to stop! Help meeeee!)
Music: $1 (Most music these days is beyond horrid, the stuff I would buy is mostly from the 70's and 80's).
DVD's: $50 (Almost all anime and the occasional tv show box set).
I think the last "new" cd's I bought were around the mid nineties or so. There are some since that I have meant to buy though.
I'm of course way off in outer space as far as metrics of any kind are concerned.

Can't say i've spent much on music cds this past year either.
I put more effort into buying games then music.
I must be getting cheap in my old age.
Othen then the fact i'm leaning towards buring, more then buying cds :hmm:
PS: Music just sucks these days is another reason also.

I can't remember the last time I bought music... but I bought a slew of games yesterday.
And I'll buy the occasional DVD (just bought Last Man of Earth and the B&W Night of the Living Dead, both for $3:D)

I always thought it was cool seeing the Mountain Dew stuff in all the Rush games. i believe there was some other advertising type stuff too in the Rush games, can't remember though.
As long it doesn't get too out of control with advertising. Otherwise I would be a really pissed off man. Like instead of waiting for load times, you had to wait 5 minutes to start playing the game, or something along those lines.
Call me a typical male then. I spend a lot of money on games (though the industry wouldn't care since it's mostly from private sales and thrifting). I rarely buy music these days, not because I pirate but because I'd rather listen to my old albums. I think I buy 1 or 2 DVDs a year (just not my thing).

I hardly ever buy new cd's, though I do buy quite a few used, at EB of all places. I don't buy that many new DVD's or games either. I buy almost everything used, except for this month I got both Doom 3 and Midnight Club 3.
I can definately see how games beat out music though. The average person doesn't have the knowlege to pirate a game, but almost everyone from 12 year old Britney Spears fans to retirees can get Limewire for free and download to their hearts content.

Well, count me in on typical for once. I told you guys, i'm just an ordinary average guy.... LOL
I don't buy dvds, mainly because i have no dvd player, and don't wish to waste the ps2 on that. CDS? Don't have time for it anymore. I used to mute games and throw in a cd, but that got boring. Seeing as I sold the mp3 player I had to another DPer sometime last year...sold all the music cds before the 04 MGC...and threw all the cd-rs in a fire to see how they really burn....i've nothing left in that category.
All I buy is games. And fishing bait.
Quite frankly, I bored of CDS and DVDS. yay, you listen or watch. woo. nothing to do. Just zone out. Woo! Real fun. x_x
