NEW YORK, Apr 13, 2005 -- More than 60,000 pirated copies of Nintendo Co. game consoles were seized Wednesday during raids in New York and New Jersey, prosecutors announced.
Four people were arrested in the crackdown on the theft of popular games such as "Donkey Kong," "Mario Brothers," "Duck Hunt," "Baseball" and others, according to a release by federal authorities and papers filed in U.S. District Court in Manhattan.
The arrests occurred after the defendants agreed to sell the games to FBI agents posing as gaming thieves willing to resell the games in Manhattan and through a distributor in the Midwest, prosecutors said.
According to a criminal complaint filed in the case, the defendants between September and December 2004 had imported into the United States more than 280,000 illegal video game consoles.
More than 60,000 game consoles were seized during searches Wednesday in the New York City boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens, and Maple Shade, New Jersey, authorities said.
The Japanese game maker told the FBI that individuals and companies copy the video games and sell the pirated versions throughout the world, costing the company millions of dollars in lost revenue annually, according to the complaint. Copyright 2005 Associated Press, All rights reserved

I wonder in what way - does Nintendo still sell NES consoles? I read they built a cheap NES clone themselves to "fight" piracy in Asia. Of course they've got the classic GBA series games, is that what they mean? Anyway, it would be easier to understand that they lost lots of money if Nintendo had made a huge ROM compilation or so which they're selling, but I haven't heard of that yet :)

You beat me to it robotriot. Nintendo sho' doesn't sell these anymore. I guess I understand why they did the raid...but I find it debatable that they are losing money because of these operations with dead consoles.

The "millions of dollars lost" seems more boilerplate than anything. The fact is Nintendo is just protecting their property, plain and simple. They don't want their IP, no matter how old, to lose value in the eyes of the target market.
Look at the RIAA and pirate music downloads. Napster helped open the door for anyone to be able to easily download their favorite song. Even though CD sales are still pretty strong, there are a lot of people who still think "Why buy the CD when I can get the song for free". Music lost value. Kind of the same deal with Nintendo: they want to be able to still sell their classic games individually, in compilations, as eCards or as an unlockable in a modern console game (Animal Crossing and Fight Night 2 come to mind) because they still have value to people.

Good. There are tons of those things littering the malls around here. They charge $70 for those things, and swear to god they are legit, and the they are endorsed by Nintendo. Everyone who even looks at those things, I tell them to stay away, they're illegal, and pirated. Some people care, other don't even seem to know what that means. It's amazing how naive they can be.

I'm glad too see these go.
They are in every damn mall in my area and in about half of the fleas.
They always say they are legit and I'm very suprised this hasn't happened earlier.
They been on the market for way over a year and I believe anyone who wants one, has probably allready purchased one.

Didn't someone say in a previous thread that the controllers on these things have razor sharp edges? That's the only thing keeping me from trying one out at mall kiosks...

Well, first I take a copy of SMB/DH. I peel the label off with my fingernails, and use Goo-Gone to get the remaining adhesive off. Crazy Glue an old EEPROM to the back, and write "MEGAMAN (PROTOTYPE)" on it in Sharpie pen. Then I usually go to E*Bay, and...
Oh, wait, sorry... thought this was a how-to. :embarrassed:

Yes, I know English grammar and spelling. Yes, I share the rules with others. I guess that makes me a "Grammer (sic) Nazi" in the eyes of several. Living in this day and age, I'll be okay with that, he said, his participle dangling temptingly...

they've got their new nintendo system coming out sometime and the ONLY thing making it look good is the fact that you will be able to buy, download, and play all the old nintendo games. that's what they're protecting.

Im probably going to sound like a dick, but i dont care. you all know that the reason most of you hate these controller thingies is because their pirated. it doesnt matter how good or bad one of these things work, as long as its pirated, its evil, right?
most of you i guarantee, if nintendo made something like this, you would be jumping on the bandwagon. personally, i love these things. sure, your not gonna get the same ammount of games it tells you on the package, but you still usually get a good share of games. personally i dont see what the big deal is. its not like nintendo is loisng any money. there is a difference (believe it or not) to losing money you already have, and not getting any money. its not like when you buy one of these, some of nintendos money is going to dissappear into thin air. besides, most of these things have obscure famicom games that nintendo isnt even profiting off of any more.
despite my rantings, i love nintendo and actually own an nes and a snes and if they actually did liscense one of these powerjoy things, i will admit that i too would jump on the bandwagon. but for now, these pirated things are the next best thing. i just dont understand how people can be so furious about shit like this. if you dont like it, walk away. its not like nintendo is going to send you an unlimited supply of games for bringing down some kiosk in a mall in some small town no ones ever heard of.
