Sony's GAP (Gamer Advisory Panel) held a contest where 5 people get chosen to go to E3 and do reporting type duties...basically they show videos of you at the show on the OPM demo discs.

Well I didn't win, but I supposedly got in the top ten (out of 10's or 100,000's of entries). Yea it sucks I was *this* close to going, but oh well. So I figured maybe you guys would like to check out my entry.

I already have 100 things I can think of that I should have added/taken out/done differently but it doesn't matter anymore I guess (not looking for critisizm). I also noticed my overall entry pretty much lacked polish. It seemed rushed (it was) and sort of felt like something was missing (many things). I guess I just didn't give myself enough time, I figured two weeks would be plenty of time (first week I sort of slacked off...lol).

For what it is, I'm still proud of my entry. I think it still turned out decent in the end and I really had a lot of fun making it.

The GAP Game

Instructions (http://www.angelfire.com/games5/gapgame/instructions.txt)

The GAP Game (http://www.angelfire.com/games5/gapgame/The_GAP_Game) (5.84MB) Right Click, Save Target As, add ".exe" file extension

Angelfire.com doesn't allow executables to be downloaded, so I had to take the file extension out...all you have to do is rename it to look like "The_GAP_Game.exe" and it should work!

It plays similar to such games as: Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Smash TV, and Fester's Quest. Basically it's a top-down adventure/shooter game or something like that. I chose this kind of game to make because I figured it'd be the easiest with my zero experience making games. I drew all the sprites/backgrounds/animations/everything in MS Paint. I also made all of the background music using Beaterator (http://www.beaterator.com) from Rockstar Games' website. The music is sort of NES-ish which fits in perfectly with the style, gameplay, and overall look (plus I'm not much of a music composer). Hey I like retrogames so I made one that looks and feels retro, hehe.

Finally, this was all put together using the Game Maker (http://www.gamemaker.nl) program (free to use and whatever you make with it is your own property...perfect for the E3 contest). The program might seem simple at first, but knowledge of programming and C++ is pretty much needed if you plan on making any sort of decent game.

I now realize I should have made it possible to run in windowed mode (right now it's fullscreen only). It would have also been nice if the Lives/Score/Health/Timer were much more viewable (can't even see a timer unfortunately).

I'm not sure if this will run on an Apple based computer and it supposedly doesn't run on the Linux OS.

So check out the game and leave your highscore!
