Heh, talk about a long topic title. :)
Hello, and welcome to another weekly feature here at DP! It's called "Friday Scoreboard", and here's how it goes: Every week I'll choose a different game at random from any console. I'll then post my choice in the Video Gaming forum along with my highest score that I was able to attain. Your mission, should you choose to accept it: Get the highest score for the week. Simple, huh?
A few ground rules must be made, however, in the interest of fairness. They are:
- No continues are allowed. Once it's Game Over, it's Game Over. (No save states, either. :P)
- No cheats or codes, of course.
- Always use the default (or chosen) settings only. This gives everyone a level playing field.
- Emulators can be used, as well as playing the real thing.
- Have fun! :)
Starting this week, a meseta prize will given out to the winners of the Scoreboard. 1st place gets 500 meseta, 2nd place gets 400, 3rd place gets 300, 4th place gets 200, and 5th place will get 100. BIG MONEY! BIG PRIZES! I LOVE IT!
Speaking of big money, to commemorate this event, this week's game is Smash TV. Blast your way through many levels in this futuristic game show to win fabulous prizes and the chance to live for another day. I'd buy that for a meseta--er...dollar!
So, what are you waiting for? Grab your favorite controller and let's go!

If you need to know what button it is, go to "Misc." menu, then hit "Game Keys". Look for "Snapshot" under "Quick Keys". You can also change the button from there.

Heh, you've got to upload it somewhere on the web to display it in the board. Read my above post if you don't have anywhere to put it.

I'll probably cut it off Wednesday at Midnight. I'll tally up the scores Thursday and redeem the meseta for everybody who won.

As many times as you want to. None of your scores are actually "final", they can be improved on as often as you'd like. :)
The only time when you have to stop submitting scores is after the cut-off date, already mentioned.

Time to throw my hat into the game. I'm a sucker for high score competitions - and Super Smash TV is one of my favorites!
EDIT: Image removed to save bandwidth - check later post for updated score.
On my first attempt I managed a 8,314,470 (Initials NSR in the screenshot). I also got to Scarface. DDCecil, we got to the same relative place but you scored 3 million more points! I'd be interested to hear your strategy. How many Big Money rooms did you hit? I managed two.
In any event, I'll give it another shot later.

I went into the 2 secret rooms (bottom right room of both stages), so that's 4 big money rooms!
BTW, I played the game again last night, got into the Big Money room of Stage 2, and then all of a sudden, one of my cats bumped into my system, freezing my game.

DDCecil, thanks for reminding me about the secret rooms! I knew this game had them and I completely forgot about it. After checking out a FAQ to plan an attack path, this time I did a little better:
EDIT: Image removed to save bandwidth - check later post for updated score.
This time I hit both secret rooms and all three marked rooms for a total of five big money rooms! Unfortunately getting the second marked room in level 2 brings you through a dangerous stretch and I was unable to get back to Scarface. I'm considering amending my chosen path to skip some of the more heinous rooms.
I know that if I can get to level 3, I could probably stretch out my score quite a bit further, so I may play the survival game in level 2, which I always remember as being harder than 3.

Okay, I decided to play again. it was 10:00 PM when I started. This time, at level 2, I decided to take the right door in Secret Room #2, and skip right to Scarface. I defeated him with 5 lives left and made it to level 3.
At level 3, I took the path I usually do, made it to secret room #3:
http://img135.echo.cx/img135/4694/picture0281zp.jpg
Afterwards, I took the right exit again, and faced the Cobra boss. I had 3 lives left after I beat them. I made it to the next room "Have enough keys". That's where a bunch of orbs ganged up on me multiple times and finished me off with the score: 17,789,595
http://img135.echo.cx/img135/1124/picture0293fx.jpg
Now since I had enough keys, I continued and made my way to the pleasure dome and beat the game. The game enabled Turbo Mode and gave me 7 lives/7 continues to boot!
During Stage 1, my brother thought it would be funny to turn down the volume on the game and put on the Benny Hill theme, Yakkity Sax. We left it running until stage 2.
I once again made it to Scarface, which seemed easier to kill this time around, though he was going twice the speed. I made it to, and through stage 3, beating the Cobras again. I made it past the room "Almost enough keys" where I lost my first continue the first time. This time, by that point, I had lost 6 continues! I made it to the next room and found out I didn't get enough keys to enter the pleasuredome. I finished off the room, and made it to the MC. I had 3lives left, and lost it on his final, small mobile form. here's my final score: 46,597,245!
http://img135.echo.cx/img135/7610/picture0328df.jpg
At this time, it turned 12:03 AM. I think that's enough Smash TV for awhile!

DDCecil, you and I must be on the same wavelength buddy, cuz right after I posted about skipping the second money room in stage 2, you post your score in which you did just that! I'd love to hit up this game two-player with you sometime.
In any event, I took an identical path and died in the room just before the secret room in Stage 3, logging a final score of 16,387,520.
EDIT: Image removed to save bandwidth - check later post for updated score.
I probably would have gotten farther, but Scarface kind of owned me this game. I managed to rebuild a small life reserve in stage 3 but I couldn't keep it going. I'm gonna keep at it though, I'm almost positive that I can get through the whole game without continuing. I just need the cards (keys?) to fall in place!

Yes, he did, but he also took a snapshot of his score before he used any continues, so I will be using that score in the final tally.

Got to the snakes this time. Again, I had a bad outing on Scarface and a handful of rookie deaths in stage 3 that I'd like to have back. I'm closing in on my personal goal of completing the game on one credit!

The key (heh) phrase is:
"Now since I had enough keys, I continued"
I wasn't going to let those keys go to waste, and I thought it would be fun to see how far I would get, and thought someone would enjoy the story.
Anywho, I played the game 3 times today, and did very bad. Got to Scarface twice, and level 3 once. The 1-UPs just didn't appear as frequent this time. There is always tomorrow, though!
Great job, Needle! I may have to take you on your offer of playing Smash TV with you, via something like ZBattle. The only problem is, I don't have a decent PC controller, and I'd have to use the keyboard!

I played again today and finished pretty much the same as I did the first time, although about 500,000 points less. I did however try something different this time - I used ZSNES to record gameplay movies! If you really want to watch me whoop up on this game up to the Stage 3 snakes, feel free to download these movie files:
http://www.needle.org/random/needle_smashtv.zip
zmv is stage one, zm1 is stage 2, and zm2 is stage 3. Fun facts: I beat stage 1 without dying, and you should definitely check out my battle with Scarface in stage 2. It has to be the best I've ever done against him. It's a shame I couldn't capitalize on my player reserve in stage 3.
Unzip the file into the same directory where you keep your ROMs. In ZSNES, load up your ROM, then go to Misc --> Movie Options. Choose 0 (stage 1), 1 (stage 2), or 2 (stage 3) and then hit play. Watch the movie and enjoy!
(Note, sometimes these emulator movies can get desynced. If you see me doing lots of illogical things and dying repeatedly, it's probably a sync problem and theres not much I can do about it)

I DID IT! It was a challenge, but I managed to get the Pleasure Dome AND beat the game on 1 credit! 1-UPs were very good to me the room "Almost Enough Keys!". In the next room "You Have Enough Keys!", the grunts kept on coming and coming, and I lost 1 life thanks to Mr. Shrapnel. I then entered the Pleasure Dome and took my rewards:
http://img252.echo.cx/img252/2083/picture0337zj.jpg
Evil MC killed me 3 times, and Mr. Shrapnel once. At 0 lives, the MC kept hunting me down, but I managed to finish him off:
http://img252.echo.cx/img252/4006/picture0344nh.jpg
Afterwards, all my totals were added up to leave me with the score: 28,576,715!
http://img252.echo.cx/img252/9053/picture0354px.jpg
I could of kept going, but the game gives you 7 lives/continues, so I just quit right there.
