View Full Version : First Pic of the actual XBOX 360?????

This post originally was regarding pics of the XBOX 360 controller, but I just stumbled onto a link to pics of the actual XBOX 360 unit! The picture is blurry, and the unit is sitting on it's side, next to a LCD monitor. Personally, I think this is either fake or a pic of a prototype, but it's interesting either way.
http://www.cgno.com/news/776.html
and back to the original post about the controller
Pics of the XBOX 360 controller are showing up around the web.
Check it out:

Kinda weird if you ask me. The first two pics are from ourcolony.net, and they are legit. But the pics certainly don't reveal a helluva lot. You really can't make out much of anything from the pics. Then you have another two pics that have been making the rounds, and these actually look more like prototypes than the finished controller. I think it's certainly possible that these are real pics of prototype XBOX 360 controllers.
Oh yeah, regarding the name XBOX 360. Unfortunately, it looks like we are going to have to get used to this silly and horrible name. I liked XBOX Next much, much better, but according to some European guy who won't reveal himself, 360 is the final name. There of course is still hope that everybody on the net calling the name "retarded" will cause Microsoft to rethink the name. Problem is, they don't have much time before the May 12th unveiling, and I'm sure that there is a lead time in terms of having the logo completed, and everything.

i sure hope they are prototypes, im not really digging the white and silver color scheme....too Apple. Not a bad looking controller though, I wonder if MS made it any smaller than the original xbox?
Sidenote: I read that the domain name for Xbox 360 is not owned by MS, but Xbox Next is registered to them :hmm: ...oh well they have plenty of cash to buy Xbox 360 anyway

Ok, now it gets even more interesting:
http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000987035687/
This is fun. It's like turning into a freaking unsolved mysteries case. I wonder if Microsoft is responsible for all this cloak and dagger shit, and it's just a bunch of clever marketing on their part to create a buzz and hype before the hype, so to speak.
Anyways, back to the topic at hand, it appears that we can determine a few things from all of the pics.
1. The follow up to the XBOX will be white, or off-white or some shade of white.
2. The controllers will be wireless as a standard feature
3. The controller isn't going to simply be the Type S pad with XBOX 360 logo's on it.
4. Microsoft is going with double trigger buttons, similar to the dual shock and eliminating the little tiny black and white buttons.

Wasn't that big silver X thing the pre-xbox unit everyone thought i'd be?
It'll be different, either drastically or not so drastically. Controller looks fairly decent but that console seems to have a bit of..surperfolousness to it somehow. Probably the half ring thing on it.

I am looking forward to seeing if Microsoft is going to listen to gamers and make the new system backwards compatable and reasonalby priced(300). If not, consider me to be one of the many that will wait. As for the pics, if they are actual controller pics, not bad if you ask me. I dont care about color, as with any new system, they will offer different colors in time.

that controller is Freaky. it looks like some third party generic brand crap. the buttons are tiny, and there's not
enough of them. wireless-ness will definetly be cool though. the pic of the goddamned console won't load all the way though. WHY, GOD, WHY?!?!?!?
:eek 2: oh wait, there it goes. it looks like crap as well.
Edit:
UPDATE: Nope, this isn’t it. We ran this by one of our trusted sources, who says that this is actually a prototype that MSFT has been showing off as a decoy of sorts and that the actual console looks much better than this.
Thank GOD!

All of this is coming from the website http://ourcolony.net which is Microsofts "IloveBees" for the next Xbox. So no need to link to external page snow, if you visit Our Colony, you can slowly join in the communities and get information regarding Xenon (Xbox 2, 360)

well the controller looks like the current box controller to me. I don't know about the system though. as we all know most pics that "leak" out before a launch of a system don't look anything like it. we are going to have to wait and see i guess.

The Xbox 2 or whatever it is is not backwards compatable. I can say this with near fact certainty. The technological implications of it would make it far more expensive to implement that would be financially sound.

I didn't hate them....unless it required a lot of use of the dpad on a fresh controller, thing is a little sharp until it's used a bunch.
Personally as long as the trigger buttons feel better I'm happy.

If you look at the triggers, there are actually two triggers on each side. It's widely believed that the mini triggers are replacing the little black and white buttons on the old XBOX pads.
So, similar to a dual shock, there is basically 4 triggers.

Actually, only two pictures are from ourcolony.net . The two controller pictures, where they only show like the left side analog stick, and the Dpad or whatever that circular thing is. It actually could be like a jog shuttle type thing that you have on some DVD players. This could be part of the whole 360 thing. It's actually possible that this controller won't have a standard Dpad, although that would be quite shocking. Not very good for 2D fighting games.
Maybe that X-box white looking thingy is only a shell to carry around the prototype in seeing how it's got a funky handle and bleeched out appearance.

I'm glad that halfring design isn't real, cause it looks stupid IMO. Maybe if it didn't have that ring then it might look a little better, but even without it still just looks like a slightly smaller version of the current Xbox, which is ugly.
The controllers don't look too bad though.
Also why aren't they calling it Xenon? To me that seemed like a better name than Next or 360.
SamuraiSmurfette
04-19-2005, 09:16 AM
ugh...so...very...ugly!
That "D-pad" looks horrendous.
here's hoping that's not official.
Do they not remember everyone's complaints about the fatty controller's shoddy D-Pad?
well you could put the xbox into a corner with the flat sides facing the wall and then the ring would make it like a bumper zbox LOL
Crush Crawfish
04-19-2005, 07:22 PM
Gaaaah! I really hope that design is a prototype, because it's hideous, IMO. Especially that ring coming of the side of it...and people made fun of Gamecube's handle? x_x
I also thought Xenon was a much, much better name. I guess they figured too many people would have trouble pronouncing it.
I'm still clinging to the hope of backwards compatibility, because I haven't even gotten an Xbox 1 yet, and If Xbox 360 is backwards compatible, It'd probably get a lot easier to find a cheap one.
I still like the idea of bumper xbox that thing would look good with the flat sides in a corner.

I'm really surprised that anyone thinks that controller looks good. It looks like a step backwards from the controller S to me. The grip wings look too big, the four face buttons are raised up so they won't be able to slide your thumb around and press, and the battery pack for the wireless just looks horrid and completely non-ergonomic. The only thing I like about it is that it has wireless built in.
And I completely agree about the Xbox 360 name. That easily eclipses _everything_ as the dumbest console name ever. Unless this thing has a VR headset built-in, I'm going to like it a whole lot less on name alone.

Well. It isn't any sillier than the Atari "Jaguar".
The Jaguar made sense to me. It was a powerful, sleek cat. It wasn't a name that was misleading.
Xbox 360 sounds to me like the console is (pick one):
A) A VR console
B) A console that displays in Circle Vision
C) An IMAX Film on the Xbox console
D) The 360th version of the Xbox
E) An Xbox that is housed in a circular housing
I'm sorry, but none of those makes any sense. The name "Dreamcast" is probably the most nonsensical console that we've had, but at least there was a reason for naming it that (Dream + Broadcast = Dreamcast :hmm: ). If Xbox 360 remains the name, it is easily the worst-named console that there has been, and it will cause consumers confusion.

Looks like the HD plugs in on the side, as seen on the 2nd photo ... I highly doubt they've only got one controller port, it's probably one for all four.
The black thing on the very left looks like an infrared receiver, maybe that's for the DVD remote ... or the controllers are IR? The button (?) with the ))) looks like some wirelessthingy of course.

With these newly released photos being almost surely the near-final model, I'm very pleased with the design. Looks better than anything this generation, IMO. This generation had terrible design; the asymetrical PS2, the bulky Xbox, and the sticks-out-like-a-sore-thumb Gamecube.

I don't know. Personally, I think that the GameCube looks pretty slick. I'm not such a fan of the Xbox or PS2 (or PSTwo) and I actually put off getting an Xbox for about a year because I didn't like the design of it that much. The Dreamcast is also sorta this generation, and I liked it quite a bit.
I think that the design looks neat by itself, but won't look good in an entertainment center or whatever. Quite frankly, it looks like it was designed by Apple, and while it is a preference thing I am not so hot about the white / clear combo that Apple likes to use on seemingly everything.
The thing that I see as being a problem is that no other components that I have seen are white. Therefore, this will stick out like a sore thumb. TVs come for the most part in that silver color now, and I would rather see this console come in that color to match my VCR and DVD player. Or black to match my surround sound system.
That having been said, I think its great they look like they are going wireless. That is long overdue. I also like the fact it looks like you can stand it on end. The concave design makes it look like that is what it is intended to have done to it, and one of the pictures even has the eject button set up so that ejecting a disc with the symbol the right way would have it on end.
As much as I keep saying wait and see, I will say this -- I haven't been planning on getting one of these and seeing these pictures changes nothing for me. I'll probably get one just like I have got almost all of my other consoles -- when they are used and I find one in 15 years for about $30.00.

Agreed. I won't believe anything until I see it for sure this May. Microsoft was very good at keeping the original Xbox under wraps until launch, so there's no reason they'd leak this much stuff out on the Xbox 360. That, and any kid with a renderer can come up with fake these days :P Lets also remember that most of these images are blurry, which is an old trick used to make fake photos seem real.
Remember when, for the longest time, Microsoft led us to believe that the Xbox was going to actually be a giant "X"??

More leaked pictures: Xbox360 Controller and Windows Media Center Remote
>> Engadget.com comes with 2 new leaked images. A picture of the Xbox 360 console itself was already leaked a few hours ago (see news item below), and now Engadget comes with 2 new pictures sneakily taken during the launch party for the Xbox 360 in LA.
The first one (on the left) is Xbox 360’s DVD player/Media Center remote control, the 2nd one (on the right) is a close-up of the wireless Xbox360 controller. The controller looks like the leaked prototype pictures released over the last few days and weeks, but it's the first time we see the silver thing in the middle. Besides sporting the Xbox 360’s logo, it is also supposed to be some new kind of button or something or other according to Engadget.

 y'know... in the end, who gives a poop what a console LOOKS like? after 32 years of gaming i've never understood all this damn mystery and faux "surprise, surprise, shhhh" crap that's taken on a multi-million dollar life of its own. sure, it's the art of the tease bumped to a ridiculous extreme (since we can't see TRUE burlesque anymore, we get corners and peeks at sexy metal and plastic instead), but in the end, if people get the thing and say afterward "the games all stink, but day-am they sure look good!"- it's all smoke and mirrors that should be breezed away with the biggest fan on the planet, common sense.
p.t. barnum would be so jealous of all this inane "colony" nonsense and the millions of people climbing over each other to get a look at what amounts to sally rand's left eyelash, big toe, and 1/27th of a butt cheek. now that the photos are all "leaked" (puh-leeze- microsoft wants you to see because they want you to BUY)... quick question: how many folks here have an xbox now and are actually going to BUY the 360 on launch day?
none of this "well, it's just FUN to get sucked into the whole tease" junk; fess up- have you committed to the thing, or are you just another lemming faced sheep in a fanboy cape flying the flag just because it's the in thing?

I'm damn straight committed to buying the 360 at launch. Xbox has the strongest online presence of the current consoles, and as a rabid online gamer, it's easily my favorite console of this generation. Every picture looks like 100% straight BS (BS fed for that extra juiced in BSness).
If the pictures were real though:
1. Looks like crap. The first 'box didn't bother me really.
2. Controller looks horrid (I liked the big controller OK for most games, the controller s is awful imo, the thing in the picture looks like a really horrid 3rd party contraption.
Heres some slogans to go with the horrid (which had better be BS dammit) pictures:
XBOX 360, because the Turbo Touch didn't give that number enough of a bad name already.....
XBOX 360, we weren't thinking.....
XBOX does what sane men don't.....
Now your planning a shower.....
That's it folks, the final model, leaked from the MTV event a couple of days ago.

No. I don't really give a rat's ass. I just find all of this humorous, perhaps fbecause I really don't care much at all.
I will buy one at launch if I actually want to play a couple launch titles and the price point isn't over $300.
I bought all of the current gen systems (including DC) at launch time or shortly after. I should probably be more careful considering how the PS2 left me feeling so burned. I thought it was a slow start..... (It was a slow start of course, but it's still relatively weak IMO.)

I suppose there's a sliver inside of me that wants a system to look presentable when sitting alongside my entertainment center, but you're right, as long as they improve upon what I've got right now, I'll buy it. to go off topic for a bit (and respond to another topic at the same time)- guess what? any system out there can be considered "the worst" simply because a few people are going to hate it for one reason or another. of course, the opinions of the non-owners is absolutely moot no matter how vocal they become, but too much "i don't have it, but my friends and gameblab magazine say it sucks, sooo..." bias can sometimes negatively affect an otherwise solid product at retail (as game cube and n-gage sales figures will attest)...

i had the pic confirmed by an old friend who was at the mtv event
Anyone could say that on the net. It's impossible to know if you are BSing or not.
"i don't have it, but my friends and gameblab magazine say it sucks, sooo..." bias can sometimes negatively affect an otherwise solid product at retail
There's only one system I hate, and I held on to it for a couple of years after launch.
And the company that makes it loves to encourage bias, especially against Sega consoles (so did Nintendo though back in the day....).
If looks mattered that much I wouldn't have that heavy-sixer sitting alongside my PS2!
Yeah, wouldn't want the VCS catching a disease from that damn ugly thing.

it's been confirmed by sources at Engadget to have been taken by a camera phone at the aforementioned MTV taping.
Do you know how they confirmed it? Can't they just say they confirmed it if they want?
(snip)
as the old saying goes: "l'esprit non jamais satisfait appartient à un avec un doigt toujours dans une oreille..." or something like that, LOL

If i DO buy an xbox2 it will only be after the homebrew scene has kickstarted a bit. The only reason i bought an xbox this gen was the homebrew scene. ONLY. Well maybe 1 or 2 extra gaems that were good but its mainly used as a media centre box and damn good it is!
As for xbox2 its a got a removale hdd... exploit here we come! But again ill only buy after the price has dropped to say £200 and its modding capabilities are shown.

I'm not sure about the 360. Online gaming holds no interest for me, especially if I have to pay a monthly fee for it. Free downloadable content might be nice, but that doesn't seem to be the way things are headed.
My Xbox has been a lemon since the day I bought it, and I'm holding off buying a replacement until I learn a little more about the 360 and whether or not it's backwards compatible. If it isn't, I don't see myself owning one before a price drop.

i like the new design better than the 1st xbox but im still not a big fan of the 360.
it kinda reminds me of one of those old desktop computers-where you used to put the computer on your desk and then you put the monitor on top of the computer. still kinda clunky and ugly if you ask me

Starting with the release of the Super Nintendo, I've bought every single console that has come down the pipe on the actual day of launch.
Super Nintendo
Sega CD
Atari Jaguar
32X
Sega Saturn
Sony Playstation
Nintendo 64
Sega Dreamcast
PS2
XBOX
GameCube
all of those systems were bought on the actual day of launch. I bought the 3DO about 5 months after it was launched. I bought the TG-16 about 5 months after launch, same thing with the Genesis.
Anyways, all of that was before I went "retro" with my gaming. And after going retro, I definitely thought that this would be the first time that I didn't get a system at launch, because I didn't have the same enthusiasm for the modern hardware. I play more retro games than I do current ones. And I figured I can finally save some money and pass on launches, and maybe even hold out till the first major price drop.
But I've changed my mind. I'm buying a 360 the day it comes out. There are a couple of reasons for it.
#1: High Definition. Besides being a video game nerd, I'm also a huge HDTV nerd. The XBOX 360 is the first system that totally embraces HDTV. So I can't wait to see the first "TRUE" High Def games. Sure, we have some 720p games now, like MVP Baseball and Amped 2 and NBA Ballers and True Crime (all on XBOX), but I still think that the XBOX 360 games will be the first "true" HD games in terms of being desinged for HDTV's from the ground up.
#2: I kindof want to maintain my streak. Starting with the 32X, I haven't missed a single major home console launch on launch day. (streak would have started with SNES, but 3DO's price F'd that up). There is a certain special feeling about launch day. You can't sleep at all the night before, you get there early the next day or maybe the night before, before midnight, you wait in line with all the other nerds and talk about games for hours till they open the doors and start the process. You pay ungoddly sums of money to the cashier and you walk out with a bag with a big box in it, a couple of smaller game cases and a component cable and memory card. Then you get home, and you sit down in the middle of the living room, and you take that brand new box out of that oversized bag, and you just sit there and stare at it for a couple of seconds. To me, those couple of seconds are priceless. It's like bringing home a new baby from the hospital. Then you begin the process of carefully opening the box. Man, when you first get it open and you get that new box, brand new system smell, with the celophane and the tape and the plastic baggies and everything. That is sweet! Then you take that thing out and when you touch the actual molded plastic for the first time, that's a very special deal. Then you hook the damn thing up, and you turn on the power for the first time, and you open up your go to game, and hit the eject button and pop that puppy in. Then you light up a really big joint, drink some nice brew and PARTY ON BABY!!!!
just kidding about that last part. I gave up the hippie lettuce and the sauce a few years ago. But still, you get the point.

Well I understood it immediately :-) ...guessing Morrissey isn't all that big in gamer-land...maybe one day EA Trax will pick up "Suedehead" or something for Madden...(yeah right!)

 y'know... in the end, who gives a poop what a console LOOKS like? after 32 years of gaming i've never understood all this damn mystery and faux "surprise, surprise, shhhh" crap that's taken on a multi-million dollar life of its own.
...
p.t. barnum would be so jealous of all this inane "colony" nonsense and the millions of people climbing over each other to get a look at what amounts to sally rand's left eyelash, big toe, and 1/27th of a butt cheek. now that the photos are all "leaked" (puh-leeze- microsoft wants you to see because they want you to BUY)... quick question: how many folks here have an xbox now and are actually going to BUY the 360 on launch day?
none of this "well, it's just FUN to get sucked into the whole tease" junk; fess up- have you committed to the thing, or are you just another lemming faced sheep in a fanboy cape flying the flag just because it's the in thing?
-_-
Yeah, I really couldn't care less what the 360 (so called because it makes your head spin ;) ) looks like. If it's ugly enough to scare my cats, then fine. They just get their tails tangled up with my cords anyway.
As I've mentioned before, my decision whether to purchase a 360 before it falls to $50 (as a collector, I will obviously have to get one eventually) will depend almost entirely on the availability of some sort of Steel Battalion sequel. So you can put me squarely in the "needs killer app" and "really friggin' picky" camps. And it's gonna take a lot more than that "Halo" weak sauce, boyos.

:D I wonder if I would get in trouble (with management) for changing my custom title to "thinks Halo sux".

Well, there's only a few more days until E3 when Microsoft will unveil everything. If history is consistent, they'll have several different designs to work with, and pick the final one at the last minute. They'll also be very protective of the machine's abilities, controllers, and so on.
I hope Microsoft presents something more than simply an Xbox with upgraded hardware. I'm not too impressed if all they have to show for themselves is more polygons or a bigger hard drive. I want to see something truly new, something that hasn't been tried before. I don't know if that's possible with videogames anymore (the technology may have finally topped out), but I can hope.
I want someone to show me something, anything, that hasn't been tried before. I want something more than just another two or three Halo sequels (although I'm sure many are hoping for just that).

That's it. It's confirmed. We're looking at the Xbox 360.

I will be impressed if it's just an Xbox with upgraded hardware. Videogames can continue to innovate without some "revolution" in the way we game (I'm talking to you Nintendo). There isn't this tremendous push to change the way we watch movies for instance (save for increased picture/sound quality, which is akin to the upgrades in console hardware), so why should video games need a change? I'm all for a new console that takes advantage of improved technology, but I'm extremely wary of a medium that attempts to change the way I experience video games (simply because I doubt the core experience will effectively change for some time, as seen with the disappointing lack of utilization of the DS touch screen).

I think it looks alright, as leat it's not as ugly as the first Xbox. It's more sleek, and much less smaller than it's predecessor.
