I've seen this mentioned many times in the "Finds" thread, but I'm not quite sure what it is. Can anyone enlighten me?

You're half right....It's more like a UK flea market, where sellers sometimes sell directly out of the car's "boot," or trunk, as that particular compartment is known as in america.

That's good to know because I thought they were selling these:

Yeah - think a big garage sale/flea-market, usually in a field and usually raining ;)

Do they have them in Australia too? Or is it a space issue kind of like in Japan where very few people have enough space to have a yard or a garage?

I dont know about Australia, but they have plenty of space there! its a huge country isnt it!!

Er we have plenty of space here, well at least I do, but nobody sells stuff out of their garages, its just like a common thing to do on a Sunday

Go to the car boot.. get rid of your junk.. or go to the car boot and hunt for games 8-)

I found this picture:

Its a picture of an Australian car boot sale, so I guess they do have them there, allthough that one in somewhere called "Bywong" looks pretty boring

From the looks of it, some woman is trying to sell cardboard boxes and plastic shipping crates

The more common name for 'em in Australia is "swapmeets",
although they're functionally identical to a flea market in the US.. also generally held on Sunday mornings, at least here in Western Australia.

Also, thrift stores are called "op shops" down here, and for the most part they suck compared to the US.. not entirely a surprise considering the differences in population, the prevalence of pawn shops that people would take their games to, and.. well.. sparkle motion. I blame sparkle motion.

Hmmm... around here a "swapmeet" usually involves lots of wine and taking certain liberties with the spouses of others. :embarrassed: Guess that's not quite the same thing.

Talk about taking multiplayer gaming to a whole new level! ;)

A car boot is a place where Cauterize goes and makes us all jealous.

For me, the terms go as such:

*Yard sale/garage sale: personal junk sale. Usually held in the driveway, or in the garage.

*Flea market: large multi-person junk sale, usually held in a large field, or a large building. Car trunks are seldom used as booths, at least in my area.

*Swapmeet: themed/specialized junk sale. Usually held by a collector's club of some sort. One example has to do with antique radios, one of which is held by the New England Antique Radio Club (http://www.nearc.net/).

*Hamfest: themed/specialized junk sale held by a group of amateur radio operators, or hams. Many of them are good sources for computer and/or video game items, though some of them are almost strictly having to do with ham radio gear (though I did manage to find a boxed TI-99/4A for $5 at one of these). Some of these do involve car trunks being used as booths, at least in my area.

I'm glad someone finally wrote up this topic. I was just wondering that same question myself this weekend.

*chuckles* yeah I spent a year in Australia (Apr '01-Apr '02) and I'm still finding myself saying "op-shop" when refering to charity stores and the like. I really miss the wander down to what was at the time my 'local' Savers store whe I was there If I'd had the cash at the time I was there I'd have been buying up all the NES multi-carts there poped up (they've not had any recently according to my friend there unfortunatly)

*Swapmeet: themed/specialized junk sale. Usually held by a collector's club of some sort.

This seems to be the prevailing definition of "Swap Meet" in the eastern/Midwest part of the U.S. When I lived in Ohio, we called established junk sales (i.e.: ones that were held every week) "flea markets" and specialized sales -- or special events that occurred, say, one time a year -- "swap meets."

Now that I live in California, I hear the term "swap meet" applied to every kind of junk sale. "Flea market" is used sometimes too, but seems to be more popular the further north you go (I live in southern CA).

Essentially, flea market and swap meet and car boot sale are the same thing. Crazy regional dialects!

Woe to the guy who travels to the First Methodist Church Swap Meet expecting SKVermin's version. LOL

Well, hey, maybe you could get some of those Church ladies to bake you Sonic or Mario shaped cakes for the swap meet..
or Pac Man cookies? How about knitting you a sweater with the Intellivision running man on it?

I guess it would raise the question, "What is a car boot?" "Or is car boot sale merely a stand alone complex? "
