at 25:30 into Final Fantasy II (a.k.a. Final Fantasy IV in japan) i'd just defeated rubicant in the tower of bab-il. instead of moving forward into the crystal room i went back down a level and saved my game in the save room. when i tried to exit the save room the screen dissolved to the center (like it does every time you exit a room) then expanded back out onto a grass field, then dissolved to center and expanded a couple more times, and then i was in a grass field stuck between some bushes and an invisible border. this same thing happened after resetting the game.
i can't do anything about it and i'm super-pissed 'cause it's like losing a save. all my characters are level 50. damn. i don't even like RPG's and i was looooving this one!!
...wait, maybe i can use "EXIT" to leave the grassy glitch place or use it in the save room and see what happens....
(attempting)
nope. doesn't work. damnit. any help? this is destroying my life.
edit:
having looked at the "glitch vs. bug" thread, i'm definitely switching my terminology to "bug" on this one!

Tis why we have multiple save slots, my friend.

You can try "Warp" too....Exit leaves a dungeon, Warp takes you to a previous level..with a little luck and prayer hopefully it'll warp you to the beginning of the floor, or the very least, the right room.

Unfortunately, FF2 was full of bugs, and you seem to have found one that is more severe than most. Others include the "D" condition (partially petrified state) and the weapon cloning bug.

Huh, good to now that. I also had a strange encounter with that game. During gaming (after playing about 6 hours or something like that) the game froze and I wasn't able to do a thing. The image in the TV screen faded a bit and the music still played but I couldn't move or do anything else. I turned the Super-Nes off and when I restarted all the saves were gone. I was very mad about it but I came to the conclusion that it wasn't a glitch in the game but some kind of problem because I was playing the US game with an adaper on my PAL S-Nes. Anway, I haven't touched the game since then and got myself Dawn Of Souls instead.

I suggest you buy the PSX version released in the Final Fantasy Chronicles package, you get Chrono Trigger with it too. Although these ports don't run as well as they do on the SNES they are bug free I believe and include pointless FFVIII quality cutscenes for you too enjoy. The translations are also quite improved
I have both versions of both games but I always play the SNES versions because the quality is just so much better than the PSX versions and its pitiful load times.

That's a common problem when using an NTSC game in a PAL system. The same thing happens the other way too. You could always pick up a North American SNES for $30 USD or less and use it in Switzerland somehow I suppose. You might also have a dead battery in the game, they often go dead after about 8-15 years or so and that game was released in 1992. You can get a new battery for less than $5 I think, I have no idea what kind you need but it can't be too hard too find. You'll also need the special Nintendo reverse tork screw driver to take the cartridge apart for that and that might be a little pricey if you don't already have one.
Edit: Dawn of Souls includes the real Final Fantasy I & II. In North America for the SNES Final Fantasy IV from Japan was released as Final Fantasy II, I believe the same is true for Europe. Dawn of Souls doesn't include the game were talking about.

Yeah I had a some trouble with this game too. Save just randomly disappared. I think it was more related to the game battery but who knows, the SNES is the most problematic system I've ever had. This is probably my favorite console RPG ever, sorry to hear you got screwed. It's worth restarting just to see the resolution. Recently I got all the way to the moon's final dungeon and BAM save gone.
I'll replay it yet again someday when I buy a new cart.

Thats odd, I've played FF2 and 3 (SNES) a lot and never saw any bugs on FF2, but there are lots of HUGE bugs with FF3.
Such as..
If Realm is muddled and skecthes herself then everything goes nuts and the color pallet changes, and you seem to have infinite numbers of every item.
physical evade is broken, instead it pulls from your magic evade. If you max out your magic evade then your phsical evade will be maxxed. I've left the system on for a whole day in battle and dodged almost every hit, but it takes some work to get all 4 members to that point. Double zephyr capes, force armor, I think the enhancer sword, yadda yadda. Have fun in the arena with this one....
And of course the vanish/x-zone deal, I wouldn't consider that a bug but poor balancing.

I've witnessed firsthand the GameGenie erasing the first save slot of FF2, and it was my friends save, not mine. He was pissed but I didn't really care.
As for that bug, that sucks. Reminds me of when I lost my Lufia save (same thing as above, game froze, turned it off, all saves were gone) like 25 hours into the game. I've still never gone back to it and that was at least 10 years ago.
Speaking of that, I should go test all my SNES games and make sure they all still work.

The SNES Game Genies has a way of doing this. Usually there are several lines of codes you have to enter. If you enter one line without the other, your game ends up being erased. I've done it with Super Metroid, but it's not such a big deal with that game. 3 hours compared to 20...
But I find it odd that there were so many glitches in FF2. I probably played that game more than any other SNES game, and I never found anything funky with it. Strange.

My very first copy of FFII (69.99!) was working fine, until it would just freeze up unexpectedly. I sent it in to Sqaure, and they sent it back to me. The employee over the phone told me the problem was, get this: I fought too many enemies! I then returned it o the store, and got a better copy that actually worked great.
Actually, what happened to the topic creator is known as the 64-door glitch. Going in and out of a door 64 times supposedly warps you to either the undreground drawf village or back to Baron, with no way to escape. That's never actually happened to me before, as I went in most doors of the game many, many times.

I first thought about the dead battery when that has happened to me, but I started the game again and the new save is still alive. So I guess it is really a problem with the adapter. I got told that it helps when I clean both games used on the adapter and also the adapter itself. I think it was mainly dust that caused the problem because I've played many hours with that adapter and never had a problem with it.
The tip with the US S-Nes is good. Unfortunately my TV doesn't display 60 mhz so I can't play importet games. I have a modded PS1 and several US and JP games for it, since I have my new TV I'm no longer able to play it because of that problem. So getting an US S-Nes is not really an option.
I also know that the FF II game in Dawn Of Souls is not similar to the one on the S-Nes. But I was so angry when I lost my saves that I had to get me something and since I was so angry about the FF game I got some other FF games I could play without problems.

On the flipside my save was erased by a friend and not by the bug. The ironic thing was the save was bugged and that is why I had it saved.

Damn! There you go dude...who knew this would be known enough to have a nickname? I wonder who the hell figured that one out!
Last time I played FFII, I never had a single glitch happen either.
