View Full Version : Sega CDX reliability.

I've got an opportunity to pick up a Sega CDx for what seems like a pretty decent price ($100). What I'd like to know is whether or not this system is a reliable one. I'm interested in the CDX because of its compactness and not necessarily its collectibility. I intend to play the thing, not worship it. I don't want, for example, the CD laser suddenly burning out on me, or the controller ports suddenly dying or some such other known console-specific malady that might plague these things. Will it hold up for light to moderate play over the next five years, or should I just stick with my Genny I and side-mounted CD instead?

because on the rarity of the CDX i would stay with the genesis and the CD attachment. I have my CDX for about 5 years and i havn't had any problems with it, but i use my genesis 90% of the time. The CDX gets used in the car or if i have a buisness trip to go on.

Lucky dog. No box or docs, but cables and controllers are all present, yar. But will she dance, and dance all night long? Can she handle the rapid transition from Shining Force to Night Trap without blowing a capacitor? Inquiring minds want to know.

it's Very Reliable I bought one on it's launch day and it's still works flawless everytime I power it up to play. Dont hesitate to get one Old Sega Hardware beside the old Sega Cd1 is very reliable.

Thanks

A friend gave me his years ago and never had any issues with it as a Genesis or Sega cd yet.

I haven't used mine much since I got it (around last September; I wasn't planning on getting one, but for $50 BIN on eBay I couldn't pass it up). I haven't had any problems with it arise, though. I did, however, have it arrive with a problem with the open button. It usually gets stuck, so I have to pop it back out to close the lid. No biggie, though, and if that's the worst problem I'll ever have with it, I'll be happy.

Personally I've always liked the JVC X'Eye more (picked one up a the local flea market for $2) but as you said, you're looking for something compact. I've heard of very few problems with the CD-X and if they're running they tend to run forever. They're not as easy to service as an X'Eye (seems lots of people have the broken CD door pinswitch problem with the X'Eye) but that's not a bad deal at all, might want to check around eBay and see if you can get one a little more complete for a little less.

My CDX serves as my main Genesis/Sega CD console. Sees play fairly regularly. Works excellent.

You'll be fine running the proverbial hell out of it.

Also, feel free to hook up a 32X to it. It should do fine.

I would say yes even though the CD part on mine won't read disks anymore. I am pissed. I wish I could get it fixed for a decent amount of cash, but who fixes CDX's nowadays?

Anyway, Id' still say it was reliable. I think I was rough with it or something.

I'm actually planning on buying one soon...I NEED a Sega CD, but I don't have the outlet space for a 2nd huge plug, so I'm going with the CDX in all its compactness. I'm glad to hear that they're overall pretty reliable.

Well I hate to rain on your parade but my CDX does have one of those great big wallworts(plug), but it does work flawlessly and I do use my 32X with it. :D

I got my recently from a local flea market for about 24 bucks CDN, the disc part wont spin correctly - you got to open it up and spin it for a sec and shut the lid and it will go ( I dont think thats a very good way). The gen part works like charm, I suppose my cdx just has a defective disc drive or spinner but its a very cool peice of hardware - glad I have it.

My friend and I both bought CDXs from a flea market.

His works flawlessly. Every part of it is tip top shape.

Mine's disc drive is not so flawless. Usually it won't start spinning unless you open it up and start it going, and even then I've had times where it's had either excessive load times or just plain stops. Since I have no idea how to fix or replace that, I just put up with it.

Of the 5 CDX's I've had in my shop, I've been able to repair four of them.

Not too bad. The answer to who still services your old game system, is www.oldschoolgamer.ca
