I've long given up trying to score these $0.01 guides. Seems like the asshole employees always snatch them all up for themselves. At least that's what they do at my local EB anyway.

I'll pick one up for you. We got one in geo a while ago and it's been sitting there. If we still got it when I go in tonight, I'll pick it up.

I must have encountered one of those when I went (just got back!). I picked up a Pokemon guide and asked the guy maning the game area how much it was. He scanned it into his computer and I could see it ring up $0.01. He turns around, hands it to me and says "It's $14.99". So I turn around and go up front, asking one of the cashiers to price check it. Upon scanning it, he does a double take and says "One cent!". He looks at me and says "You still want it?". I replied "Oh yeah!"

So it was interesting. I also went to EB and picked up the last two Pokemon GBA videos I needed for $10 each. They've also got F-Zero Legends and 1080 Avalanche going for ten bucks too, if you haven't added those to your collection.

Thing with these guides is on the sunday ad set packet III, they're listed in the junk out section so if most stores get around to it, they pull them all and send them to inventory in the back. So the sooner you get out there and check, the better chance you got.

Gee...imagine that. The employees doing the same damn thing anybody here would do if they worked there. Who'd a'thunk it???

I went to another Best Buy and they had FF1&2, Metroid Prime 2, for 1 cent. I just heard from a friend out of state that Fable is also ringing up for 1 cent. I am going to edit my first post with this info.

I thought most stores have rules against employees buying up all the clearance/sale items for themselves. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I dunno, but I know after I bought guides during the last sale the next day when I went almost all of them were gone. so I think the employees picked up most of them...

Honestly, I don't know, but based on my limited retail expirence, when it gets to clearance items, like the penny guides, they don't much care who is buying it, as long as someone gets it out of the store. (I think that last sentence needs a few more commas.)

Hmm...looks like the morning crew actually did their job on sunday and junked them out. They were all sitting in a cart in the back.

They'd slit my throat though if I tried to buy em.

Must be nice to even have the chance to buy guides for a penny. Here in Canada, if I score 'em for $4.99 I've gotten a good deal. Last week I scored the guide to the original Baldur's Gate PC game in absolute minty fresh condition and almost peed myself with happiness. I've been lucky to get most of my N64 guides for under $10 each.

One of my local stores pulled them just minutes before I came. The other one had them still in with the regular guides. The one just across the state-line had them all out on their 'special' table with signs and such. It doesnt even look like anyone had bought any...

Since finding out about these deals, I haven't bought another guide except for older RPG guides that I find at a used place in town. I just think $15.99 is a little too much when Best Buy will penny them out in another 3-4 months.

I'm going to check it out today, I hope they still have the guides for MGS, Metroid, Final Fantasy, and Fable.

Bah, saw a few Pokemon FireRed/LeafGreen guides sitting around in the store, so I though I'd pick one up. But of course, it came up as the regular $14.99 price. Had the same kind of luck while I was hunting for Circuit City clearance items...

actually according to company policy at best buy the guides are supposed to be thrown out. Yes thrown out in the compactor. i worked there for 3 years and i can't tell you how many guides i rescued from going in the dumpster.
And can you blame the employees for getting all the $0.01 guides. It's kinda a perk for working there. Why don't you think that all the $5.00 games at CC or BestBuy are never there. the employees get them all. If you want to get the deals like that get a job there.

It is the NINTENDO ones that are pennied, not the Prima guide. The Prima guides till ring up at full price.

Oh... and Pokemon Colosseum and Zelda Four Swords are both still full price... I checked.

Okay, here's what I managed to pick up a few days ago:

(All of these were obtained for $0.01 cent, save for the Paper Mario guide)

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

Prince Of Persia: Warrior Within

Mortal Kombat: Deception

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door (strangely, this one rang up at $0.27 cents)

Mech Assault 2: Lone Wolf

Fable

Goldeneye: Rogue Agent

Ghost Recon 2

Final Fantasy I & II (GBA guide)

Lord Of The Rings: The Third Age

Metroid Prime 2: Echoes

All in all, I ended up snagging about 25 guides altogether. :D

It was funny, I brought a whole stack to the service counter to have the employee scan each guide and when I returned, there was this Asian guy in the Strategy Guide area/shelf with a yellow basket filled with guides. He was on one side and I was on the opposite side. Since I had already looked through the piles of guides, I knew where all the guides (that rang up at $0.01) were.

I immediately started piling up guides left and right.

All of a sudden, I realized that I didn't really need this many guides, so I started talking to the Asian guy. He was really cool, so I helped him a bit and even let him 'have' some of the guides I was going to buy.

Since he had a huge pile, I told him that he should get a shopping cart, which he shortly returned with.

We started talking about 'cheap ass deals' which ultimately led to a short discussion about "CheapAssGamer.com" and how he kind of didn't like browsing the forums since 'everyone there is rude', according to what the guy said.

By the time I was at the cash register area, he was behind me and he had a cart FULL of about 80 to 90 guides. He said that he only gets them to use as 'trade fodder' which I could understand. I'm sort of regretting not buying more, but then again, what the hell am I going to do with a pile of old strat-guides that no one may want? Of all the guides I bought, the entire weight was about 22 pounds! I'm sure the other guy easily had about 100+ pounds of weight to deal with. LOL

I guess I'll hold onto these and give a couple away as gifts to friends. 8-)

I have a friend who's B-day is coming up and he's a huge MGS series fan. I guess I know what gift to give him for his b-day. ;)

Most of them figure it out on their own. You have to actually LOOK for deals to find them...they don't just magically appear when the deal fairy floats your way on gossamer wings of Suikoden 2 manuals. Check. Local. Stores. Regularly.

This has been a public service announcement.
