Hey all,

Since I have had more time to post, I am going to try to find Retro games that need to be discussed about! I looked for a topic and didn't see one. Here we go!

From the Digital Press "Advance" Guide:

Gain Ground - Sega Genesis

Designed by N Okabe, Kanchan.
Description: Based on the 1988 Sega coin-op. Slow-paced action game that looks like a Gauntlet clone but requires more intelligent match-up strategies on the player's behalf than twitch reflexes.

Style/Genre: 360 Degrees/Shooter. Click to see other games of this type.

Released: 1990. (USA)

My buddy Mark and I have spent countless hours on this game. Reminds me of gauntlet meets Lolo. Mark has a loose copy, and I am having difficulty obtaining one loose or complete at a reasonable price! I have never played the coin-op nor the Japanese Sega Classic re-release for PS2. Great game on the Genesis for 2 players at the same time. Easy to learn, later levels make you think! The different characters with different abilities are the key to making this game fun. If anyone has an extra copy as trade bait, let me know!

DISCUSS!
EDIT: Here is a thread about an interview with the developer http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=16585&highlight=gain+ground

Well, Grand, I took the liberty of firing up GG after your post, and I gotta say, it is DAMN fun! I don't know what quirk I like the most: The ability to play as at least six different types of warriors (and there could be more), the fact that each level just takes place in a single screen (a nice refreshing change of pace from this... "scrolling" that seems to be in just about every action game LOL ), or the ability to recruit "midgets" and make them into full-fledged warriors by merely bringing them to the exit. I intend to play this one a lot more! :D

I am another huge Gain Ground fan. Check out this interview with Yoshiki Ohka.

I am also keeping an eye out for a complete copy. =P It is one of the few Renovation titles I have a hard time bumping into in the wild.

I've only played the SMS version, and I've never really given it much play.

Raccoon Lad - I didn't even know there was a SMS release! Was it a US Release?

Sotenga, yeah there are more than 6 character types, keep playing, I dont want to ruin any surprises! Also, try playing with a friend! Even better. I am convinced this game was meant to be played with 2 people!

Allow me to take this question, Raccoon Lad. No, it was not. It only came out in Europe, Australia, and Brazil in 1990 (as the SMS was dying in the US). I thought it was a pretty good version (compared to the Genesis, anyway).

This game was truly kickass. Many hours spent playing this one. Unfortunately none of my friends dig it so no 2 player action for me.

I don't have an extra Genny copy right now, but I run across it every now and then. If I find one in the next week or so I'll snag it for you, just holler if someone else hooks you up in the meantime. :)

Wow, you were right! Among others, I got to play as Robocop, Hit Man from NARC, and M. Bison! Wow! LOL

The character range of this game is impressive, and I was thoroughly addicted last night... until I inexplicably beat round 3 and skipped all the way to round 5! I completely missed round 4 somehow! Has this happened to anyone else? Have I accidentally initiated a level skip code? To officially beat a game, I prefer to do so without any warps.

Also, try playing with a friend! Even better. I am convinced this game was meant to be played with 2 people!

I can say that for a lot of games, but 99.9% of the time, I'm a loner. Ah well... it's not like playing with myself isn't an unfamiliar concept. (anticipates a few disgusted groans from the audience) :P
