View Full Version : Who are your rivals?

I'm talking VG hunting here.
Have you ever missed any great deals because of your local rivals?
My closest main rivals are Ghouls N Ghosts and Raedon as I visit both of their hometowns occaisionally in the hunt. Are there any amazing VG finds you missed because of a rival DPer? And damnit any other VG hunters in East Texas?
I searched and could not find a topic, so delete a way mods if such exists.

Well I think my biggest rivals would tend to be the other PlayStation nuts here. So that would mean Dangerboy, Kevincure, GoodWillHunter (for ONE game ;) ), Achika and some others i'm sure are slipping my mind. However I've been helped or help a few of these rivals quite often so I dont really see it as that. When it comes to something big or OMG that might show that more than one of us would go after i'd let them know before an attack that would just end up costing the purchaser more money for the item in the first place.
Funny thing is that none of these people are anywhere near 'local' to me.

I don't THINK I have an DP members as rivals in my area...maybe if i went to Rockford to hunt I would though. I do take the occasional trip to madison to hunt though, might be someone there.
If there IS someone nearby, let me know, we could pool our resources. 8-)

Hmm. I really don't know any other collectors in my area at all. The only ones I know well are Nez, cause he lives right down the street and tynstar who I've met a few times. I do major thrifting and hit up a few game stores regularly and always pick up pretty nice deals. Nez doesn't collect most of the same stuff I do so it's no problem.
Sometimes I do wonder who some of the "insert system here" people are. For example, at the Yard Sale store the clerk always talks about a "Nintendo guy" and at Gamezone, the owner Tim always talks about this saturn obsessed person who asks him for saturn games every week. Sometimes I wonder if they're DP people or what not, hehe.

I know two local "rivals" here in my town one of whom i have contact from time to time. he's more into collecting 16bit and has no car so he's not very mobile :D
the other one also collects 8bit but I haven't met him on the fleas for a long time. maybe he quit.

To my own amazement I found out a while ago that there are four other collectors in my area, I haven't met any of them yet. I guess I'm the most active on flea markets because I live in town directly, so I don't "fear" them as much ;) At least I haven't noticed them getting any of my deals so far ;)

There's one guy on ebay w/a store called "Mad Gear LLC".
He has tons of stuff, lives very close by, and I imagine he's buying up lots of local stuff.
I see tons of "I buy old games" craigslist postings competing with mine, I believe they might be his.
I never get anything worthwhile through those postings...either.

I'm not aware of any local DPers (I think Cauterize is probably the closest about 150 miles away), though there are 2 other members at dreamcasthistory.com who are/were in Newcastle. Strange, since it's a much smaller community than here.

I dont have rivals, there's really no competition for games here
I live in a very small city in Ontario Canada and yep.....there is another DP member who lives here, NESgamer.....which is remarkable, sort of like findiing a needle in a haystack. We met each other by accident last year. We were talking retro games and I asked him whether he'd heard of a site called Digital Press. He doesn't post every day. I believe that he collects NES, SNES, DC and other vintage systems. I collect N64 and will flesh out my DC games when the opportunity allows, so we aren't rivals.
Other than that, I've met only two other hardcore retro collectors...neither of them being DPers. One guy doesn't have a room of doom. He has a house of doom and owns every North American system launched which, I believe, includes all color variations.

I dont really know if anyone here is a collector in my area, but it seems that when the Goodwill stores get stuff and I pass on it and come back a day later, everything is snatched up. I dont know if its a collector or some guy that thinks every game that is older than PSX is super rare... EX) Asteroids for 2600 was priced at 5 bucks... it was gone along with the other assorted games (College Football 96 for $5.99). Crazy people....

My rivals are the seven people ahead of me in the Frogger high score list :D
I guess Hellvin but we don't get in each others way to much. Theres only a couple of deals that he "stole" from me and vice versa, shit happens.
I jacked a bunch of complete O2 boxes that Jagdiesel wanted so I guess I'm a small rival to him. But pry not.

Squirrelnut is the closest to me, with tonyvortex and ScottK a close second.
Don't know about the other two guys, but Tony's the bastard that keeps getting kick-ass stuff traded in at his used cd/dvd store. Boxed Quadrun for the 2600, Congo Bongo for the Intellivision...I hate him. ;) LOL

There's tons of rivals in my area. It's ridiculous.
I know Goodwill Hunter has snagged numerous deals from me, same with The Collector. They're much too sneaky.
I don't THINK I have an DP members as rivals in my area...maybe if i went to Rockford to hunt I would though. I do take the occasional trip to madison to hunt though, might be someone there.

I'm right on Madison's campus :)
Though, I don't do much hunting there, no car up here. When I go home, then that's when I hunt.

Geon_DP is the only other collector on these boards that is very near me.
Vespertillio is within 50 miles or so, I guess that makes us in competition (especially down at the Mile High Flea).
But to be honest, my finds in the wild are limited, but I have stops I hit for deals/speciality items that no one else seems to know about. And Geon_DP and I work together on a lot of projects.
I know there are a few other "collectors" around; but I don't think there's anyone else other than Geon_DP and myself that are in the same league in a 20 mile radius.

Lessee...Altairboy seems to be the only other DP'er in town, but there's no competition `twixt us. If anything we point out good finds to one another when they arise. Anyway he's almost exclusively about Atari (which is my primary but not sole focus) so it works out well.
There's a new local shop I started going to when I wanted to look for some games for my recently acquired TG16. The owner only had a few sports games for this system, and indicated that someone had come in recently and cleaned out the considerable remainder of his TG16 inventory :hmm: . I don't see this as a loss for me since this happened before I had my TG16, but it was interesting to note. I'll have to keep my eyes open for this clown...
One of the local thrift stores has a guy working there who, after a couple small discussions, I can tell is too knowledgeable about gaming to be in the position he is i.e. - in between the donation drop-off and the sales floor. I am amply convinced that this guy leeches things he likes and puts the scraps out on the floor. And there's a big dusty pile of Saturn sports titles at this thrift which backs up my hunch  .
Last example: I was in a Gamestop a couple of weeks ago when this middle-aged couple, who looked like refugees from the Cracker Barrel gift shop, came in and asked the sales assoc for "something really old...like an Atari or a Nintendo." Heh...stupid Ebayers looking for gold in all the wrong places....The assoc started trying to sell them a Flashback. LOL
Other than those examples, Albuquerque is fairly rival-free, too bad there aren't more sweet deals to gather up.

There is two guys with video game stands at the flea market, we call them "over priced guys" they are my rivals because they tend to snatch things up like top loader NES's and then slap $99.99 price tags on them. Incredible! you really have to hunt in my area now...

There is some guy on Ebay from Grand Rapids, MI that sells a *ton* of nice, rare stuff so I guess he's my rival. Never met him though. I don't know how he gets it, but I imagine he's finding it in the wild. It pisses me off too because I comb the thrifts & pawns so much much and don't find jack.
Cuewarrior is in G.R. too but I beat him to everything, so I'd hardly call him competition. LOL

oh good grief i have a ton of em', luckily most are my friends so its cool. pretty much everybody who attends the NECG meets is an area rival, almost all of em hunt. when i spot another collector at a flea i always starting heading in the opposite direction, scan the area for games and then come back to say hi. nothing sits around for sale very long in these parts, luckily the population density means theres always more old games out there.

Well, Currently, YoshiM is in the same county. I do feel somewhat bad about several finds in his backyard. By that, I mean when I found a pong system only a few blocks from his neighbourhood.
But as for this town.....HAH. Shit that I don't buy sits for MONTHS. Old original game boys, combat/smbdh carts, and endless psx greatest hits that i won't touch with a pole....All sit there. HAHA.
I'll be out of this area soon enough...at which point i'll be in reasonable distance to stomp on Darth Vader's and Dave2236's turf. Fear me.

The only person I think can really be considered my rival here is Captain Yashiro, after our EPIC DDR battle at last year's CGE. And this year, the conpetition will be even more fierce! Who wishes to challenge the unoffical (and probably not too much longer) DP DDR champion!?

Achika used to be, when she was in Detroit. As it stands I still look at her as my "total collection" rival.

My brother...
he like to just take things.
He took all of the N64 stuff (which we split the cost of almost everything)...I can justify him taking the system, since he bought an nes and snes (Though I didn't make him, ours were here and he decided he wanted the systems at college, too), and I found my complete copy of Kirby's Dream Course for SNES in his room...wtf.

Dobie is on the other side of the state, and I doubt the people from northern Utah come here very often (though I may be wrong!), so that leaves me alone in my area, DP wise.
On the other hand, my local thrift usually doesn't have anything, though I did get very lucky for those games back in January.

I know there are several members here living in NYC, but I'm not much competition since there just aren't much of any places for me to go game hunting at. I question if those guys are doing much hunting either. Unless they got some good secret places, they're probably mostly stuck with eBay too.
In my home town, I don't really think there are any people here that are hunting around there. All I know of is some people in Seattle, but I don't go anywhere close to Seattle in my searching. There is this one store, though, where they'd have a schedule of sales, and I'd wait for them sometimes to pick up some stuff. Once I'd go back a few days or week later, a lot of the stuff I was planning to buy was gone. However, I found so much other good stuff there that I doubt the stuff was bought by a serious collector. I'm guessing the stuff was sold because they were relatively big name titles that everybody likes.

I dont know of anybody nearby but when I was recently living in Michigan I went to a pawn shop and saw Dracula X for SNES there cart only for only a few dollars. I didnt have any cash on me and didnt want to use my debit card so I was going to come back the next morning. Well of course it was gone. Needless to say later when I found perfect copies of Tactics Ogre, and both Lunars almost 100% complete (only missing the pendant) I snatched them up real quick!

Yep, Kamino's about the only closest rival. I go up to Green Bay maybe once a month but I don't really do any game shoppin', so Darth and Dave are pretty safe from me. The next closest is probably Lendelin, Chunky and Goodwillhunter (off the top of my head) but I hardly ever venture south.
Kamino's right, there hasn't been much around here anyway for a while. Though I had a decent flux of Atari 2600 carts come my way, that's about it.

Are you talking about the New Castle flea market? The only thing I've found there is a complete SMS Phantasy Star back in 1998. I've also had 1 great score each at Bargain Bill's in south DE and Spence's in Dover, since we moved here in '98. But I don't get out to the markets anywhere near what I used to. :(
So I guess grandamchandler is a rival of sorts, but I don't think I've swiped anything out from under his nose. The only other DE DPer that I know of is my brother in law, TheSmirk. Sometimes we go hunting together, just not very often.
Um... not that I'm totally aware of. I think Goodwillhunter may be one though - I think he's in the Milwaukee area. EIther that, or someone with a similar name. They keep draining stuff from the goodwill stores.

Local rivals? I know they exist, but I have yet to meet them.
Two things that have happened to me:
1) I have a gigantic subcollection of Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt cartridges. I have no idea how this happened but whenever I see a SMB/DH cartridge at GameCrazy I buy it. Once I bought all of the ones they had in stock and one of the employees says "It's you! You're that guy who buys all the SMB/DH carts!". This is technically true, but I hadn't been to GameCrazy in months, so they checked my buying history and it WASN'T ME. Someone else in my area is into hoarding the most common NES game!
2) I was at the flea market one town over with my dad/brother. I had separated from them briefly to look for stuff, and when I met back up with them they told me they were looking for me. They had seen someone selling a Virtual Boy for $10, and before they could find me someone came and managed to get it for $5. But that's OK. This was also the day I found both a complete copy of Herzog Zwei ($1) and Tengen Tetris (one of three games I got for $10)
So yeah, there could be other big collectors in my area, but I'm not really afraid of them. I'd rather befriend them.
EDIT: Oh yeah, there's also a guy about 30 miles away who buys NES games and resells them on iOffer. I know this because he made me a crappy offer for all of my NES duplicates.

The only DP member that lives even remotely close to me would be AdamG. He used to work at one of the two Gamestops in the area that I picked up about a quarter of my NES collection from. I wouldn't really call him a rival though, since I'm not aware of him ever buying anything that I wanted before I could get to it. On the other hand though, I snagged a copy of Final Fight Guy at the other Gamestop in the area, which I later found out that he was going to buy. LOL

I was apparently in the thrift store at the same time as a local rival today.
I was browsing the electronics aisle and noticed a couple of NES controllers, the Atari paddle plug and play game, a NES RF Switch, and then my eyes alighted on a Genesis model 2 with one sega controller, one third party controller, and RF switch. I quickly snatched that up, but then noticed a guy behind me who had gotten a cart and looked like he had wanted it.
I went to get a cart to put the Genesis in, and when I came back, the NES Controllers and the Atari paddle game was gone (and I had wanted that - especially for only $2). Oh well, the jokes on him as I also got the real find in the thrift store today - a loose Dragon Warrior 3!
Edit: I'm also convinced that, in retribution for me taking the Gensis 2, he took its AC adapter (I couldn't find one in the store, so I'm blaming it on him!)

I suppose there are a good number of DP'ers here in Cleveland that I've been competing with at the gamecrazy sale.
I know someone beat me to a complete Arc the Lad collection and a copy of Chrono Trigger at the gamecrazys this past week. Both by just an hour or so...
